Lenovo T480 (M2 2242 SSD + 2.5" HDD) sluggish/freezes when powered up once a week

I've had my Lenovo T480 since September 2018 and the computer is still covered by warranty. I've also done several upgrades to turn this into a beast. 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD + 2TB HDD. It has an linux OS and Windows 10 installed in the 512GB SSD.

Now, here's an interesting development. When the laptop is turned on-rebooted and is used regularly, everything works fast and flawlessly.

Since I haven't been traveling much, I haven't been using this machine very much so it gets turned on maybe once a week to perform updates and regular maintenance. Something very weird I observe is that when the laptop is first powered on after a week safely stored in a pelican case, the laptop freezes and/or operates extremely sluggish while booting in either of the Windows or Linux operating systems.

This is especially strange because after the first boot, everything works as expected and fast but the first boot after a few days in storage seems to slow it down for a while.

Has anyone else seen this? Lenovo diagnostics show no problem anywhere, chkdsk and fsck have been performed. Nothing else is detectably wrong.

Any suggestions? Even if I request warranty services, I don't even know what to ask for.

 

I ran the Lenovo diagnostics again, RAM failure. The OEM "RAMAXEL" RAM failed (Crucial one, which I bought seperately didn't fail). I am claiming warranty as this came with the laptop.

For a 2k+ laptop, they stuck a noname brand RAM.

 

Funny development:

After having a live chat with Lenovo service centre, apparently my laptop model 20l6s8e300 is not supposed to have the 2666MHz 16GB RAM, instead a 2400MHz 16GB. I cannot really explain where the switch happened but I argued that I would never buy a RAMAXEL and I don't even have access to it and apparently it is one of the "as-built" model for my laptop, and the lady who was servicing me was able to make sure that I get a replacement for 2666MHz stick since she didn't like the idea of sending a 2400MHz, slowing down the other stick.

She told me that the replacement 16GB 2666MHz will be sent but she cannot really tell what brand it will be but I should be receiving it in a few days along with a return label to send the defective RAMAXEL. I'm quite happy with the resolve for now, I just hope I get a Hynix or Samsung, something other than a no-name brand Chinese one.

 

After the defective RAM has been replaced, login at Window 10 was still freezing. Linux side works flawlessly.

My W10 install is set to automatically login without typing in password then locked by executing C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation from a batch file. This batch file is placed in %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Some sort of screen locking during or shortly logging in causes the computer to freeze in Windows 10.

The caus seems to have been the AppXSvc. I enabled it to delet useless things such as *xbox* things and etc using powershell. I disabled it by changing from regedit
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\AppXSvc\Start to 4 (from 3).

So far, no problems observed.

 

Lenovo sent me a replacement 16GB 2666MHz RAM stick, thankfully a Samsung RAM and with a postage to return the RAMAXEL 16GB stick.

So far, no problem observed. I am convinced that the cause of Windows 10 freezing is still the AppXSvc.

 

With AppXSvc disabled, the freezing after login still happened. For the time being I've decided to restore AppXSvc function, and from msconfig.exe configure "normal startup" since I had had several applications disabled before. I am crossin my fingers and hoping for the best.

 

msconfig's "normal startup" didn't help. W10 flash drive cannot detect or repair any issues. Linux still working perfectly fine.

Now trying resetting winsock catalog
netsh winsock reset
and turning off link state power management

Crossing the fingers...

Honestly I don't even know if W10 fresh installation would even help but I am leaning towards it.

 

The above two did not work. The freezing still happens! Any suggestions?

I've resentfully re-installed W10 and so far so good. I am guessing that the defective RAM messed up the cloning process because I changed boot SSD's a handful of times.
