Hello all, just upgraded my T7300 to retail T7700, using the maintenance manual, and i have 60/65° C average on using it let's say Internet , usual surfing, email stuff

could some t61 users post their temperatures, idle, 3D, or whatever to compare ?
    thanks

Those temperatures are way to high, especially for an IBM. Are you sure that you have applied cooling paste. It could also be that you have done too much, which can also cause overheating.

Normal temperatures while surfing et cetera should be around 45-50 for the T61. Those temperatures are more likely to occur at full load.

    Good luck.

I use Notebook Hardware Control. Very accurate. You can also check out Everest, Mobmeter or Speedfan.

    Good luck.

tpfancontrol gets the actual motherboard temps... NHC, Everest, etc get the cpu's core temps only.

    My T7400 idles around 43-45C.

My Pentium M 2Ghz Dothan idles at 58C. Beat that :). When it actually was able to throttle and undervolt in windows xp (I currently have vista) I got it to idle at 52C!

Oh ya under load it hits 70-80C and crashes. Fun stuff. I hate ASUS now.

Sorry about this being slightly off-topic but what were you battery times with the T7300 and then with the T7700? Was there a noticable difference when a.) just surfing the web or b.) doing something CPU/System intensive?

Arctic Silver takes about a week (or two can't remember which) to cure. You can sometimes have a 10 degree drop after the curing process.

I have never seen than in over 40 computer builds. Maybe a 1-2 drop, but only if you are working with a gigantic blob that is thinning out.

    Hi all-

Has anyone actually succeeded in doing this? I'd like to apply Arctic Silver instead of the current stuff - the fan ramps up too much for my taste, and I've done a clean install already. Perhaps a better thermal interface will solve the problem.

I'm concerned about messing it up though. I've looked at the service manual, seems straightforward, but I've never opened up my thinkpad before (t61, integrated graphics, 14").

I read another post that one should not touch the thermal pad on the graphics chip. Can't you remove that and add AS instead?

    Thanks!
    betty

both of the cores on my T7500 hover around 40 - 45 during surfing etc, they ramp up quite high during gaming, the GPU is always at least 60 almost all the time, but i'll always prefer Fahrenheit anyday, it gives me a more accurate representation, so i can see it and think, hmm if i extended a heat pipe i could boil water, nice.

    My 7800 idles at 48 degrees C.

I've built about ten machines and I've always used Artic silver. I've never seen any noticeable or significant temperature over time.

I know the claim about temperature drops is made. I've just never seen it.

"I use Notebook Hardware Control. Very accurate."

I just installed and tried this. The program certainly lives up to it's name "Control".

It instantly dimmed the screeen and reset all my power plans. Without asking me, it set itself up to be added at boot time. It shut down my system after idling for five minutes while being plugged in. It installed several icons in my stsem tray and now i can't find my battery monitor.

So I uninstalled. That didn't work, so I deleted the directory and the executable image and returned to my old power plan. My machine still seems to be going to sleep after five minutes and rebooting with a very dim screen. I assume this must be the "Grain of Wheat Plower Plan." It has turned off my battery monitor and it's going to take me, I don't know how long to recover from this.

Viruses are more fun than this program.

Can you please describe the process as to how you switched the CPU? I am thinking of doing this as well. I read the manual and so far, from what I can tell, we have to take out the screws to remove the palm rest, then remove keyboard, then the KB Bezel, and then the heatsink, right?

    How long does it take?
    How tedious is it?
During which parts of the cpu upgrade process do you have to be extremely careful?

    Thanks

    Eyecon,

If you've done it before, it should take about forty five minutes. However, if you haven't, give yourself two hours.

If's really unnerving to operate on your own baby.

I'm pretty technically inclined, so I can definitely figure it out without freaking out. I'm just wondering if it's really worth the effort at this point. I doubt going to a t7800 will do anything for me.

Are the new penryn chips supposed to be compatible with the t61 architecture? if so, I will wait until then to upgrade

This is all a big question mark as my hospital system is issuing us gatway tablets to use for everything. I lobbyed as hard as I could so they could make it the x61t's, however, I guess gateway was cheaper for them...sucks!!

Are you vents blocked? Get a can of compressed air and blow out your laptop's vents to get rid of any dust or lint that is trapped in there (make sure you turn your laptop off first).

What type of surface are you using your laptop on?

vents are ok...looks clean (as new) and have room all around the laptop. On a normal desk..with a router and modem about a foot away to the left (at home). It's running ok now.
I just turned it on in the library for about 35 minutes now running on battery.. 55C and HD is 31C

So it seems that the constant ~55% cpu was making it too hot?

Yeah it seems that your laptop was doing something that caused it to heat up. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Your laptop never got into the critical range. As long as it stays stable from now on I wouldn't worry.

If you want to get a cooling pad that will help a little bit but it isn't necessary.
    Tim
