Howdy dudes. I've been seeking a clock generator for the Lenovo T61 so I can overclock the CPU. The specific model I own is the 7664A21. I've overclocked the GPU to 687/941, now I'd like to try the CPU.

If any one has any ideas, I'd be greatful.

If this model cannot be overclocked, I'll probably look into undervolting. Is it possible to keep the clock speed at 2.4GHz? Or is Speedstep one of those things that can't be tuned off completely? Turning it off in the BIOS locks the clock speed to 1.4GHz. :(

P.S. If you don't know, don't bother replying with "overclocking is bad", "don't overclock laptops" etc. I am an experienced overclocker, I know what I'm doing.

    Cheers.

The only app that I have seen that may work is RMClock.

    Not sure if it works.

I'd like to see if I could get my T9300 to 3ghz.

    :D

Just remember that your CPU will run hotter with the same cooling solution. You don't have many ways to cool down a mobile processor so just be careful... And good luck...

I'm aware of that Laursen. :)

So is RMClock the only option? I'd rather a free alternative.

Does RMClock overclock, remove Speedstep, and/or lower voltages?

EDIT: Ok, I tried the software. I can't seem to be able to overclock without it upping the voltage. I'm fairly sure this thing would be stable at lower voltages.

Overclocking won't happen, but I got the undervolting to work. I'll post my results when I'm done.

    Undervolt: 1.25v ---> 1.125v @ 2.4GHz (stock)
    GPU: 400/600 ---> 867/1003 http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/62kg2/

Now, one issue. The laptop won't let me overclock when on battery. Is there a way around this?

    Cheers.

Anyone know if you can enable GPU overclocking on battery power?

I think yes. I use RivaTuner to overclock mine, and it's at 648/900 core/memory. In RiverTuner I have options for 2d, 3d low power ( I guess when on battery), and 3d performance (where I actually overclock)

the CPU you won't be able to overclock due to its locked multiplier from Intel. Undervolting works with RMClock, I don't use it though.

this is with my guess that you have T7500 and nVidia Quadro NVS 140M

I'm using Rivatuner too, however you can't apply the overclock without the AC power connected. :/
Also, the sliders for low power 3D cannot be altered. :(

I have the Quadro 140m and T8300 CPU. I'm fairly sure that the drivers are preventing me from overclocking while on battery. I'm using the lastest ones with modified .inf

cyberglitch: What benchmarks are you getting with the overclock?

    And GPU temp too?

At 687/995 I got 2762 3DMarks (with anti-virus and other programs running in the background)

Haven't tried at 1002MHz mem, wouldn't be much more than that.

Temperature under 100% load ranges from 55c to 65c.

no way you keep temps under 65 deg C .... try some long gaming and you'll see ... mine hits 80 deg C with AC working in the room and laptop being lifted on stands about 1/4 inch tall

I just scored 2294 3DMark06 or whatever is called

Well it's true. The maximum temp I've had so far was 70c with OCCT CPU and ATITool GPU stress tests running at the same time.

Keep in mind that I've undervolted my CPU.

I did 3DMark with the 1002MHz mem, and got 2770 3DMarks. That's only an 8 point difference over 995 mem.

    cyb3rglitch,

did you mean 687 instead of 867 in post#7?

    micro_gt,

I have similar temps as cyb3rglitch, it took: bending heat pipe/clips, OCZ freeze, and undervolting

Ok, I did some experimentation regarding this battery throttling and made a breakthrough.

When on battery, the only clocks that the GPU will use are 2D clocks. So by overclocking the 2D clock, you essentially overclock the performance 3D clock for the battery. The only issue is, you can only overclock to stock. :(

At least it's not underclocked anymore. If anyone knows a way to overclock further, let me know.

    Ah, you're amazing.
I was wondering how to get better performance on battery for such a long time thank you!
To bad you can't override that idiotic setting somehow and get normal performance.
My default core clock is 475 on 3d performance, but the highest I can get on 2D performance is 255, defaults at 169.

In RivaTuner, set the 2D clock to exactly 400/600. That should work. If the slider doesn't go high enough:

    - Click the 'Power user' tab
    - Expand 'RivaTuner \ Overclocking \ Global'
    - Change the value of 'MaxClockLimit' to '150'

That'll let you go further to reach 400/600 clocks on 2D.

I'm not to experienced with OC'ing, is that a safe setting to use consistently?, since its above the recommended range.

The 'MaxClockLimit' tool just extends the slider, it doesn't alter the clock speed.

400 core clock and 600 memory clock is the stock setting, so yes, it's safe.

EDIT: Ahh, you have a newer model GPU. Not sure what speeds that runs at, but try it anyway.

Yea, I have the FX570M. So what your saying is, I should be able to OC to my what my stock settings are when I'm not on battery power?

You can overclock to stock while on battery power. On AC, it is automatically switched to stock.

    quote from another forum

    ----

and for all those having problem with performance on battery..
    1. download rivatuner 2.09
    2. open the power user tab
    3. expand "rivatuner\nvidia\overclocking"
    3. double click the "EnablePerfLevelForcing" option and set the value to 1
    4. now switch over to main tab.
    5. under driver settings click customize then the first option (system settings)
    6. Set Force constant performance level to "performance 3D"
    7. click ok and u are done
    enjoy!!
