I purchased (15) Lenovo T61's (Model Type 7658-15U) for my company. They are all Win XPP except for one. The one separate one, we got with Vista Business. I have been having a problem with hard drive noise. Not the usual noise you hear from a HD. It almost sounds like a HD going bad.
And to top it off it only occurs when the unit is unplugged from AC power (ie. only when on battery).
Lenovo has replaced the Motherboard, Fans, and memory. The HD has been replaced 3 times. If you plug in a HD with XPP from one of the other machines, the noise goes away. As soon as you install Visa onto a new HD it returns. Again, this is not your regular, normal HD noise, and it only occurs when on battery..not on AC.
I have been doing IT for 18 years and never heard noise like this unless it was a bad HD. But I am certain that is not the problem. It does have something to do with Vista..because it only happens after Vista has been installed.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Know of a solution?

I am facing the same type of problem. my guess would be Vista .I noticed that the HD sound is due to hard disk activity..Diable the diskkeeper etc..it have disabled many services & it seems to be better now.

Thanks for the quick response.
Does it only occur when on battery for you? What other services have you disabled? -
I also can't figure out what the OS could possibly be doing to make a HD so noisy...as if it were pushing the RPM's higher than the drive was rated for

I had a loud clicking noise in mine that went away when I turned off power management for the hdd, or selected 'max performance' for the PM plan. I think in Vista, Power Management is turning the HDD completely on and off - not good.

I would try disabling Vista's indexing services, and ReadyBoost, and see if that makes a difference.
As someone else said, disabling Diskeeper might help you as well.
