On my Lenovo T61, I have just started to notice a noise when I close the lid of the laptop. It makes a sort of crackly/staticy popping noise when the lid is about half-way closed. It seems to be a physical sound (not coming out of any speakers) because it still makes the noise when the volume is muted, and the sound is a lot quieter when I slowly close the lid.

Is this something to worry about, or should I just ignore it for now, hope the sound goes away, and figure I have a 1 year warranty anyway?

I'm probably way off base, but are you sure it's not the sound of the spring-loaded latches snapping home?

No, this occurs when the lid is at a 45 degree angle with the base of the laptop.

Have you checked to make sure the laptop isn't performing a hard shutdown when you hear that noise? Perhaps you're shorting a component when the lid is at that angle.

Mine does it also. It's most likely the plastic panels of the LCD housing that flex slightly as you put force on the lid to shut it. It could also be the stiff LCD cable that flexes and moves as the lid is closed.

My lid has a squeek as well. When the lid is closed, the front right edge can be pressed down a bit and sometimes clicking sound. I think it's because the screen isn't designed right.

I am having, what I think, is the same issue with my T500. Is this something to live with or something I should send in for repair?

I think its an effect of "the screen is like a bridge" design. The screen has a subtle buldge in the center so that when pressure is applyed the screen acts like an arch/spring and can apply a large force by the time it reachs a flat point, and thus helps protect the LCD compared to the already-flat design of older thinkpads.

Perhaps the bending is causing your 'clicking' problem?

As for the squeek/noise at 45 degrees; no idea what that could be.

My T61 squeaks when you move the screen, however, the static noise I have no clue about. Is it something worth sending it in over ? , Probably not. Unless it interferes with the performance of the machine, or the hinges become VERY loose, I wouldn't worry about it.
