My ancient 8100 is a matte plasma deal, which gives the negative film effect if you look at it from extreme angles - that being said, ANYTHING will be better than what I am looking at now. :)

I have the Samsung too and even though its not the super best its still way ahead of my grainy screen in my old Dell.

The grainy screen was really the pushing point for me to never buy a Dell Again. Especially hearing they haven't fixed it.

I used to own one of these big beasts but I had a lesser model than you (PIII M 866, 512mb, 16 mb gf 2go, etc) and I remember the screen was not very good when compared to these newer Lenovos. They had very poor viewing angles and unless you viewed images by sitting directly in front of the screen, you would get some colour shifting. For my T61, I was lucky to get the LG screen, so I am pretty happy with my new notebook.

I just got a T61p about a week ago with WUXGA (1920x1200) and the display is beautiful.

The NVIDIA drivers set it to 50% brightness by default so raising that any higher actually makes it painfully bright. The text is very sharp and the colors have been impressive. The text was easy to read, its about similar to reading a newspaper. On the battery, it does become dimmer and harder to read so I raised it to 90% brightness (pgup to max brightness, then 1 step down).

Overall I'm loving the increased real estate. The largest I've used before was 1680x1050 so it feels a lot roomier. Only downside I would say is the viewing angles but the screen only appears dimmer and no "negative effect".

I'll have to look up the make when I get home.

The only thing I don't like so far has been the bluetooth mouse. This is more of a wireless mouse problem. Every one that I have used so far has a small lag at the beginning when you first move the mouse and it drives me crazy.

Just got my T61p... 42T0329 is the FRU on the LCD, which appears to be a Samsung they used in the T60p? Wherever it came from, it's the worst LCD I've ever seen. I went with Lenovo to get away from the XPS grainy screen fiasco... only to get one anyway.

Well... I guess it's out of the question to call Lenovo support at 8:22pm MST. Nothing but busy signals.

And I guess the catch is that they aren't in the US.

One way or another, either this screen or this whole laptop is going back.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience Ben. I just recently received my T60 and I'm okay with the LG-Phillips LCD screen. I would've loved to receive the 220nit screen, but alas the 200nit is alright compared to my glossy Asus.

Really? The tech center that I called was located in Atlanta, GA. They were supremely unhelpful but were US-based. If you dealt with a salesperson, I'd contact them first. That was what I ended up doing and things worked out to my satisfaction.

Another option would be to go to the Lenovo-sponsored forum. They have Lenovo employees who you can PM with your issue. They're pretty helpful.

Hi, I am new to this forum. I am sorry if this might be a stupid question. please enlighten me!

I also have a t61p wsxga+ samsung screen. I have tried calibrated using the "recommendations" a lot people have. for the gamma side, most of you guys put that 9% is the optimal amount. isnt the default for gamma 50%? I have tried to change the gamma to 9-13% and the screen seems so dark to me. Am I missing something here?

I am trying to calibrate my samsung screen to my best ability, so please bear with me. Thanks so much in advanced!

This is a good guide to compare your calibrations to:

    http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

Every screen is different, it's best to calibrate your screen independently from others' settings.

    Good luck!

When I first opened up the Nvidia Control Panel, the Gamma setting was at 9%. I assumed that this was the default setting because the laptop was only a few days old, I had not done any upgrades and I had not made any changes to the Nvidia Control Panel previously. As I said earlier, the screen is bright enough for me and I usually set it to 13/15 brightness. The Thinkpad Power Manager will lower the screen brightness automatically based on your power settings and whether the laptop went to standby or hibernate. You may want to change the brightness setting down and back up just to make sure the brightness setting is optimum before you edit the Nvidia Control Panel->Display->Adjust Desktop Color settings. BTW, ladala, are you using XP or Vista?

Personally, I set Gamma to 0%. It helped a lot with separating the bright colors.

I first noticed my whites were too bright when I went to this site:

    http://www.tweakxp.com/

If you don't see the paintbrush icons in the background then you need to calibrate your monitor. For me, turning off Gamma helped a lot.

Thanks so much guys for replying. I am using windows vista business. It is weird because when i clicked the adjust desktop color settings, my defaults for brightness, contrast and gamma are all 50%. is it because of the program version I am using? My nvidia control panel version is 1.4.230.0.

Thanks so much once again for replying.

All right, just got mine, and the screen is samsung. It looks like the screen is dirty - and I think that is what is meant by grainy. I am calling them today. So, I'll be the guinea pig for the US. :)

EDIT: Contrast level at 50% allows only the first to third checkered boxes to be seen; however, moving the contrast creates banding in the gradients. I get vibrations in image 2a, and major vibrations in 4a. And, when I look at the logo over the grey background, I get a rainbow of colors.

Samsung here.its a little grainy but i have seen this graininess on almost all matte kind of LCDs.i happened to use a HP some days before and i fully compared them.
The hp is brighter,no graininess at all but the viewing angles were just not satisfactory to me.my samsung proved to have better angles.(the HP had glossy screen)
also, the light and the brightness was not even within the lcd.when it is dark you could easily tell which part is receiveing more light!im glad im having my thinkpad as the samsung screen really doesnt lose to other LCDs.perhaps a bit lower than VAIOs.
after all, having this normal to good LCD shouldnt disappoint you from buying a THINKPAD or regret buying it!
and I DO KNOW that when we look at those clean bright LCDs in other laptops we wish our thinkpad had one of those!
but remember they are mostly glossy and they have their own pros and cons.after all,a happy thinkpas user here. :)

Mine too! I looked up in PC Wizard and it stated LTN154P2-L05. Is this the good samsung wsxga lcd? Otherwise I wouldn't mind sending it in for the much more defined samsung/lg. Just trying to get the best out of the money I spent, you know.

Ben and I have been talking and believe that that screen is an old Samsung screen used for the T60 (which I think could be similar to the bad dell M1530 screen, but that is only my little conspiracy). I sent it back because I was not satisfied - my part number is the 0238. I think that the assembly is the housing (maybe) and the one just listed as LCD is the LCD. I would go based on how well you like the screen. I just thought there was too much grain for whites and felt that after looking at the calibration site, it needed to go back. They sent me a box - I was very polite and explained the problem, and they were helpful.

I just want to warn you, though, that it really needs to be a reasonable - I was really distracted by my screen, which looked like it had a bevel (sp?) in the lighting.

EDIT: I didn't want to change the contents of my message, but I do want to ammend a couple of things. I have both parts listed: 42X4641 and 42T0329. The latter is the part number for the LCD assembly from the T60 - it seems that Samsung (or Lenovo) has rebranded the LCD panel. Now, I don't know if everyone and their mother who has this 42X4641 LCD panel has a dual listing. It would be interesting to see if there is documentation of computers without the 42T0329 number accompanying the 42X4641. So, if you know how to check your documentation, post if you have a double listing. If there are some without, there may be a comparison to be had between the older LCD (which has the 42T0329) and a possible newer LCD with just a 42X4641 listing.

Tech support sent me the box and didn't give me a line about "they will look at it". They gave me the impression that mine would be changed without a problem, but we will see. I post the results of my experience. Someone else posted in the Lenovo forums that they turned it in, had no problem, and are now very satisfied.

I recently ordered a T61p and I found out today that it comes with the Samsung 42T0329 LCD. Very disappointing.

I spoke with post-sales and they have agreed to provide a full refund, so long as it remains unopened. I should receive the machine next week.

To those of you who have seen the 42T0329, do you think it's worth sending back? If so, what are my other options for a ThinkPad? The T61 14.1" standard screen?

Nice job jooooeee! I took some time to perform this same comparison 5 months ago, so I thought I'd supplement your thread by posting the link to mine: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=191784&page=5&p=2728274

The thread includes similar comparison images of (calibrated) LG and Samsung T61p 15" WSXGA+ screens. We found them very similar...the LG might have had a slightly better viewing angle, the Samsung possibly slightly more vibrance in certain colors. It's important to account for camera effects, such as vignetting, as well.

    42T0328 42T0329 15.4 INCH LCD DISPLAY FRU
42X3996 42X4641 15.4 INCH LCD DISPLAY ASSEMBLY FRU

Looks like I have the Samsung; I was hoping for an LG, but I'll check it out and see how it goes. I don't plan on watching too many movies, video editing will be done via external monitors, and photo editing shouldn't be too bad after a calibration.

    I hope.

Thanks fignuts I just wish that I had my Canon Rebel Xsi when I did this comparison the camera I used was just an average point and shoot.

And yes I agree the Samsungs colors where very nice but the decreased brightness made it uncomfortable to read in high light settings.

You should be fine as I said the only thing that is bad is the brightness and it only applies to very high light areas such as in the middle of a sunny park.

Looks to me that you have a Samsung. With that page that you linked, do a search of 42X4641 and it should bring you to the WSXGA+ screens and then to a Samsung.
