btw anyone have an idea of how much the Fujitsu T904 will cost?
Seems like the only real alternative to the TPY... (havent heard about anything else with the same possibilities) - any oppinions on the difference between these to types of convertibles ?
(rotating the screen vs. yoga-flipping style, what is best? any experience?)
Havent had the chance to try a laptop with the t902 and t904 rotating style, but it seems like a more practical solutions as you dont have to lift the laptop... i'm quite possibly wrong so asking away here.
Ohh yeah how much better is the feel of the TPY compared to the Yoga 2 Pro, when its flipped all the way back.
I saw a video on youtube (was it lead.org?) where it showed how the keys could move just a tiny bit even with the lift n' lock system of the TPY.
Yoga 2 pro's no lock system annoyed me quite a bit, as it was uncomfortable and seemed like a bad solution regarding to the protection of the keys.
- Have a Thinkpad T43, best laptop ever, got it second hand about 7 years ago, and ubuntu 13.10 still runs like a charm, its amazing, I have high hopes for the TPY!
-
I don't see why everyone is expecting such high prices for this laptop. Was it not stated that it would start at $949? That is definitely the lowest configuration, which is probably a core i3, an HDD, 4gb ram, and an HD screen w/o a digitizer. Then add $100 for each upgrade. 100 for i5, 100 for FHD w/ digitizer, 100 for SSD. So I think it would cost 1250 for those specs. Getting i7 and 256gb would probably put it in the 1500+ range.
Anyway i'm really excited for this laptop. My only wish was that my first yoga would have a digitizer, and here it is! Now if they would just release the damn thing already. -
Hey, thanks for keeping people informed. This is exactly what I was up to today. Added the laptop to my cart and was tweaking it step by step, then came here to the forum just before I clicked BUY, to see if there were any eCoupons. That's when I saw the digitizer fault, which ruined everything. Waiting it out now. I considered buying it anyway, since you can cancel your order within 7 days. Also, at least here in Sweden, it says "shipping time: 1-2 weeks"...

Here is a link with information of the digitizer using EMR technology with 1024 presure levels.
SOFTPRO - Lenovo ThinkPads with Special Pen: ThinkPad Tablet 2, ThinkPad Tablet Helix & ThinkPad Yoga
http://www.wacom-components.com/english/technology/emr.html
Last paragraphs in this page explains what can affect digitizer behaviour.
Probably the control board is placed in that point and it is not properly shielded. Could be Wacom design issue?
Can you try this and check again if the pattern changes?
1. Reduce to the minimum the brightness (backlight LCD circuitry affects digitizer sensor panel)
2. Disable wifi
3. Disable webcam (and mic) -
the problem with the digitiser is certainly concerning. I have to wonder if anyone ever carried out the same test (hand-drawing a grid with the digitiser) on other machines (Surface Pro, Samsung Ativ 700T ...). If anyone here has one of those machines, it may be useful to carry out that test, so we can know if it's an isolated problem only present on the Thinkpad Yoga.
If the result turns out to be the same, I would say that it's a major scandal for Wacom, no less.
so sad ... -
Im slyly glad I can't afford this till January now
If it is present on all current Wacom devices such as my 500t that my mate just bought (Ill sneakily test it out) then I won't have any issue buying this device as I used that digitiser for a year without being affected or noticing it meaning I won't notice it with this device.
I think its definitely some hardware defect, or just a faulty batch where a piece of shielding wasn't applied ect.
Hopefully will be rectified for you guys by end of the year and newer batches won't have the issue. -
Nfc is said to be optional
GPS comes with wwan, but this is not available..
But no instantGo?
That is hard. Think basicly every ultrabook has this! -
Hello,
I was about to pull the trigger on an i5-256Gb model, but I'm frightened by the comments on the digitizer... Can anyone else with a digitizer do the grid test to confirm that the issue is present in all devices?
Many thanks -
I will do these tests tonight to verify. Thanks for the extra info.
For anyone concerned, I really don't notice the fault 99% of the time so far. It is in an area of the screen that I don't really write in. It wouldn't stop me redommending the laptop to anyone.
Regarding win 8 v 8 pro, main use of pro is to allow connection to a Windows domain. There are other benefits i.e. virtualization/security but that is the main reason I needed pro.
Regarding i5 4200 v i7 4500, for most uses I doubt that you will see a difference so i5 is probably sufficient

As I posted before, I'm having the same issue as simon_at_mso, in exactly the same place on the screen.
-
Is that because you were given a test model without a pen, or does your model just not have a screen digitiser?
Since it's most likely the former case, either your model is pre-release with different hardware, or there's simply a bad batch (the two affected users are both from UK). -
As I should be receiving my TPY i7 FHD (digitizer) 256DD 8GB today I thought I'd chime in - and hopefully put a few minds at rest. I'll do the digitizer test asap and hopefully confirm that my unit isn't faulty. Fingers crossed.
FYI, I'm in Denmark and I ordered my TPY from Føniks Computer.Hodeis likes this. -
Digitizer's control board should compensate RF interferences. I am not sure if this is done dinamically or it is set per LCD panel or notebook. It could be they measured this info in tablet mode with a mechanical hdd and. or simply is not well measured. In that case, a firmware/drivers patch could fix the problem if it is afecting all TPYs.
-
I hope this is true. Could it be possible to dismantle the screen and put an aluminum sheet between the screen and whatever component is causing this ?
-
LCD back side has a metallic sheet for external components but digitizer is integrated with the panel with backlight leds, LCD circuitry, sensor panel and control board. It could be done applying shield to those components that means new fixed panels series (hardware) or a less optimal solution based on software/firmware of the control panel to compensate the design defect in that particular zone.
-
The pro version lets you network connect to different network domains - which is useful if you need to use the TPY in a work context.
As for the processor - reported battery life difference - you get an extra 20 mins with the i5, i guess it depends on what your planning to process - for me it will be 36MP images in Lightroom / PS and so I'm thinking the I7 model is needed - if this digitizer issue turns out to be more the exception than the rule. If the digitizer issue is happening a lot (and given that I've seen posts from 2 users reporting this so far it could be...) then I wont be buying... -
At least one person with the digitizer has reported it not occurring - so its not all TPYs...
-
My one is a review model built in October. It is not a mass production model.
-
YAY!
Or maybe he didnt do it right!
Wait, if one person has a fine unit, that means it's a hardware issue 100%? -
I just tried this and it's still exactly the same. The only way I could find to disable the webcam and mic were in privacy settings. I set "Let apps use my webcam" to "no".
-
Waiting for your test to know if i buy it or not... fingers crossed

It is on Lenovo's site now. Showing the base model at 1299 (not 949 as previously said--maybe that will be the "sale" price?). Not much in the way of configurable options as of yet

This is severely overpriced, and it is only the base model. Absolutely unacceptable.
-
Probably not complete yet. Options are very limited. Nothing on NFC yet it appears.
-
It isn't really the base model, i5, 8GB ram, 128GB ssd, FHD with Digitizer. Quite a few option boxes are checked.
-
It's only 4 gb ram, and no option boxes are selected..?
-
It does have the digitizer, i5 instead of i3 and a 128gb SSD instead of the HDD. On the australian site these upgrades are worth ~400 USD.
-
Pricing and configurations are funny atm. In France, the base model is i3, 256 Gb SSD, SD Panel, wo digitizer for 720€ excl. Tax
No way to have a model with a 128Gb SSD, and switching to a FHD panel with digitizer will set you back 160€ (excl. Tax again) -
Now I will take a look at Vaio Flip again...
Sad... -
There aren't literal check boxes but relative to the specs on the tech specs page, this model is above the bare bones. I was wrong about the 8gb, that is automatically selected with the i7
-
Careful with the customization. Adding the i7 for $160 actually increases the price by $290, because the i5 only comes with 4GB of memory, and the i7 only with 8GB. So it's $160 for the i7 and 130 for the 4 additional GB of memory (which you could buy for half that from newegg, if it weren't soldered in).
So fully loaded (i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, dual band Wifi -- and no NFC available, as yet) it's $1769 before tax. (Oh, and a grammatical error in the blurb: "The ThinkPad Yoga delivers flexibility for business. It's 12.5" display rotates 360 degrees to offer four different usage modes:...")
Underwhelming.Clerish likes this. -
Give it some time, options and better pricing will happen. I still can't decide between this and the x240 if they ever come out with the FHD on the x240. I don't think I really have a need for tablet mode or the digitizer and Yoga is 0.5" wider and deeper and not as upgradeable as the x240, it's just so darn cool
-
Well, fair enough. But the T904 battery is user changeable, the Thinkpad Yoga's isn't. Two years down the road, you'll want to change the battery, without voiding your warranty.
And while the max RAM capacity is the same, the T904's isn't soldered on; you may be able to replace it with faster RAM (as i did with my X220).
Also, the T904 has a better selection of ports.
Of course, these are small things, perhaps, but if I wanted a machine without any user-upgradable parts, I'd get a macbook.
Oh, and the resolution: 2560 x 1440 vs 1920 x 1080. -
Why isn't there 8G RAM.??!!! How long will I wait for more
-
There is 8GB RAM, but ONLY if you select i7.
FWIW, my X220 never seems to use less than 4GB RAM, which is why I'm glad I have 8GB and wish I had more. -
It's way too early to purchase. The price is too high and customization is limited. Give it a few more weeks and you'll see e-coupons and more options. Personally, I am planning to purchase in January. By then all the possible configurations should be available along with NFC which I also really want.
-
How do you guys plan on using NFC? I haven't figured out a use for it yet.
-
I'm just returning my Vaio Flip 13A and ordered the ThinkPad Yoga. Couldn't stand with wifi dropouts, and the "page up"key came off within a day or light use! Many users are complaining of fan noise. There was fan noise on mine, but wasn't too bad.
-
The quality of the speakers and eventual fan noise in silent mode has been asked several times but I didn't read any answer concerning these issues yet.
May anyone share his observations about this? Thanks
-
Hello,
Do you think a 2.5p/9.5mm hdd will fit in the TP Yoga ? -
More and more devices are starting to incorporate NFC. I mainly use it to pair devices such as my Bluetooth speakers that have built in NFC pairing. I also plan to use NFC for quick transferring of files rather than using a USB chord or Bluetooth file transferring.
-
Anyone here who can compare keyboard travel and feel of trackpad between the ThinkPad Yoga VS. ThinkPad Helix?
-
I think I saw 7mm specified somewhere.
-
I really hope I don't regret this later, but I went ahead and ordered the i7 model w/ digitizer 256GB + Dual band WiFi. Before I did though I went through Lenovo's chat. I wanted to know about the return policy and how long I have until I can cancel the order once I placed it. They asked why and I mentioned the issue with the screen and digitizer warping.
He said ... "we had heard about some issues in the beta models in the UK. however, those are not issues you will see in the US models so no worries there"
So he seemed to know exactly what I was referring to, but I'm a little scared of the issues I will be seeing in the US models.
Then I asked if there was any coupons or discounts that are available and he came back with...
"Yeah, ok, good news. I can save you over 200 bucks on this cart. That would put us at 1556.72 before taxes. shipping would be free as well."
So that's a ~$157 difference between this model and the one at Fry's which doesn't have the digitizer or dual band wifi (I think) which makes it a bit more reasonable. So I went ahead and did it. He said it will ship on 11/28 and arrive 3-4 days after that. -
Do you happen to know what the code for that discount would be?
-
That's a sweet deal that you scored. I bet those e-coupons will be made public soon. Looking forward to your review
-
No sorry, the rep asked for my Cart ID and I placed the order directly through him via the chat.
-
For those of you waiting for discount. I chatted with Lenovo rep and he was able to give me a $212 discount for the i7, 256GB model.
-
Actually - I just checked my order confirmation and noticed this: [12CLOSE0624]: -$212.28
-
Thanks everyone for all the information posted up. Really helped with the decision.
Just wanted to let everyone know that I just purchased one, i7 8gb, digitizer, 7260AC, and Win 8.1 Pro. 1819 before taxes. Talked to the service rep and they were able to get me about a $200 discount as well. They also have a price guarantee where if they change the price in the next 21 days, you can submit a screenshot to sales to get the difference back.
Also, Lenovo has a 10% off coupon if you sign up for their daily emails which might be better if you haven't used it already.
Hoping the digitizer issue is an isolated issue, if not then it should be covered under warranty or as previously mentioned, a sw fix. I'm from the US.
