Cheers for posting your feedback, I appreciate it.
The screen of the T41O is the one point that makes me hesitant to pull the trigger... I'm eyeing the 8440p because of the screen mainly, or maybe the bigger W510 or 8540w...

Any picture when you get a chance and I'll be happy as job :)

No, it's not that bad at all. If you hold the computer up to your ear then you can hear it. If you are working in a room with no background noise, you might be able to hear it but it doesn't bother me at all.

I haven't had it working under full load yet, but normal use it is fine.

Same thing here! You really hardly hear the fan! I thought about this issue too but I must say it is surprisingly quiet.

I think I've decided on the T410 over the Dell Studio. I'm leening towards the Core i5 540m vs. the Core i7 620m due to battery / heat issues.

Anyone do any photo editing on the T410? If so, how's it been? I'm a little concerned with some negative comments on the screen. Also, if I'm editing photos, whould you suggest the nVidia over the Intel integrated?. Thanks.

On my Dell, if I press both touchpad buttons (below the touchpad) simultaneously (by pressing in the middle so they both click in, with a single finger), it counts as a middle click. I use middle click constantly.

Does the T410 do this when you press both touchpad buttons simultaneously?

Great....I guess the best thing to do is order the minimum ram then upgrade?

EDIT: Does the T410 have any USB 3.0 ports? tks

That is what I did. Note you have to take the keyboard off the get to one slot, but by following the hardware maintenance manual, that was very simple - there is one screw on the bottom and then the keyboard slides out.

I choose the Crucial 2x4GB memory CT2KIT51264BC1067, although there were slightly cheaper options... I know this works if that's useful.

I had the *exact* same problem with my new T410. I had mine for a week as well and left it off overnight, but plugged in. When I woke up I noticed it was a bit hot, and when I opened it up, part of the plastic mesh was melted.

this has to be a faulty model, at least i hope so. otherwise lots of people would have problems using it with docking station and external monitors.

For people that have received their T410, how well did Lenovo aligned the LCD screen along the screen cover? Mine was a little off so I'm just checking if is normal so I don't have to drive an hour to get it replace.

You might want to check the screen if you have had this happen to you. I think my screen may have been damaged by the heat so I asked the service center to check it out.
The service guy said he had never seen a speaker melt like that before.

I cannot remember if I tried it on Windows, but in Linux this works. Additionally, the middle button on the keyboard (which works for the trackpoint scrolling) also doubles as a middle click in Linux. I am sure the behavior is similar in Windows.

This might be a pretty lame question, but I'm looking into a T410 for university.

Was just wondering how the T410 with the discrete graphics card would fare with some light/moderate CAD work (Solidworks mainly).

Also, is it possible to order the discrete T410 with the 6-cell battery? It looks like it's only available with the integrated ones. Is it possible to place an order over the phone and do this?

Hm, really. Well then the discrete Quadro graphics card should be able to handle most of my tasks, eh?

Any last words of advice? I've got my finger on the trigger for one of these.

It certainly isn't a strange question, but you'd probably get a more objective answer if you called/emailed SolidWorks posed your question, with detailed info on the candidate specs of the T410 (and any others), your usage behavior and your budget.

The Thinkpads T-series aren't 3D workhouses though. What I can say however, is if I was making money with it, and lost productivity due to an inferior performing hardware meant lost money I would go for more powerful. More powerful unfortunately always means less portable (whether by size, weight, battery life) and usually higher cost. A university can't obviously force a student to by a brand new expensive top of the line laptop and afford it just for CAD. You'll probably be learning more of the basics and not need super high end. Also if you expect to use CAD mainly for work (and you don't have "fun" with also at home), almost certainly you should expect your place of employment to provide you with a laptop adequate for the job...

I updated the new BIOS for T410, then I found SLIC missing, and now Windows 7 can't be activated.
Please don't update the new BIOS: Version 1.12-1.04 http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...IGR-74268#main

Is there any one would give me a copy of T410 SLIC? (Don't worry, all the T410 SLICs are the same, no special information included.)

Received my t410 on the 1 March and finally have it up and running. This be my first thinkpad since my old A21m in the late 90's. Despite the mild criticism the refreshed t series has undergone I just want to say that I am extremely happy with the fit and finish of this laptop over any other laptop I have ever owned. Really does feel solid, with the exception of the ram cover on the backside.

    - Battery wiggle is not as pronounced as some users make it out to be. Actually acts as a nice grip (9cell). A little annoying that the display flexes between the hinges while the lid is closed.
    - I like the travel of the keys despite many reviewers claiming it to have taken a backward step from the t400s-400 and prior. No flex here. Absolutely solid.
    - The screen is nice and bright, but I do admit the colours and saturation are completely lacking.
    - The LED backlighting is great but makes my bundled 22 inch thinkvision monitor look old and dingy (ccfl). But the colours are way better on the external monitor.
    - I don't know how I ever lived without the ultranav. The pointer on my dell d630 was tragic.
    - Love the minimalist look while its closed. Can't say the same when it's open though.
    - Finding win 7 refreshing, but am still irked by the unfamiliarity. The previews on the taskbar aren't as snappy as i'd like.
    - Putting this thing to sleep is a pain, it has woken up in my bag once or twice. I've gone back to hibernating the machine.
    - I thought that using the fingerprint reader to auto-boot would expedite the welcome page, but it doesn't. It still manages to open it, albeit without the need to swipe or type a password, but i still don't see the point of why it comes up

Absolutely love the machine. No regrets in not getting the w510

Thanks a ton for this post. Puts things into a different perspective, and it definitely makes sense. The temptation of having a beast of a machine in the W510 would have been nice, but the T410 will most probably meet all of my needs, and be more suitable for times when I just need to take notes or lug it to class from home.

Besides, I just placed an order this morning with the 30% coupon off the Canadian website. This sets my mind at ease. Here's hoping I won't be disappointed!

I received my T410 on Monday; have to say I'm very pleased with it. The lone exception so far is the inability to record from the sound board. I'm also confused with multiple entries (4 for NVIDIA and 1 for Conexant) in device manager under Sound Devices.

I'm able to record from the internal microphone, but the resolution is awful. Anybody been able to record streaming sound directly? I've tried disabling various entries, reinstalling drivers, etc without luck.

Powered USB-Port= always on, even though the Laptop is off (but this not actually a novelty, since a few laptops have this setting in the BIOS, well, at least its yellow! :D).

The other 3 are plain USB-ports.

How bad is the screen on this thing? People are saying it is bad -- but compared to what?
Is it bad compared to glossy screens (NOT a fair comparison)?
Is it bad compared to the T400?
Is it bad compared to other anti-glares?
Is it bad compared to CCFL anti-glare screens?

I currently have a Dell Vostro 1400 with a CCFL anti-glare screen... is it going to be a downgrade or an upgrade?

    Hello everyone,
    I've ordered my first thinkpad and it's on it's way. I am getting a T410 with a core i5 -520m, Integrated graphics, WXGA, 4GB RAM, 250gb (5400rpm), Windows 7 ultimate for $920.00
I haven't been able to find any reviews for a T410 with a core i5 -520m. most if not all of them have been for the core i5 -540m. Most of you guys here seem to have the 540m as well. I would have loved to get the 540m as well but my budget was $800 and this was the closest T410 I found.

Anyone out there with a similiar config to mine done any benchmark testing?

@miliranga: Seeing as the only difference between the Core i5-520M and the 540M is a small difference in clock speed, I wouldn't expect the latter to be drastically faster. The 520M is still faster than pretty much all the Montevina Core 2 Duos.

Great machine - post some feedback when you receive it!

just wanna share my thoughts on the t410. my configuration is 500gb/7200, i7-620m, Nvidia graphics and 4gb ram.

my old notebook is 3y old. fujitsu t4220.

it's not as fast as i wished --> especially windows boot time (did clean install). but i think the harddisk might be the bottleneck, since all cpu tasks like statistics software, etc. are done very fast. i can't say much about the gpu, but there is a video on youtube running modern warfare 2 on a t410. warcraft 3 tft runs on full details on external monitor flawless.

so far i am satisfied. i will now only list the complaints:
-fan is running all time. it's not loud tough. it's ok for the library, but don't expect it to be completely silent.
-flex on the left palm rest. i can live with it, it might scare some people that u can hear the chassis, if u press rly hard.
-wireless button on the side is a total disaster. it's so thin and small, i miss it always, if i try to turn off wireless without looking.
-i use it with a docking station. since the last posts with the speakers melting, i paid attention to this problem. before the clean install the left speaker was rly hot, when the lid was closed. now it's fine, but i don't trust it --> keeping the lid a bit open always.

it's a beautiful notebook and i hope it will fulfill it's goal --> running for 2-3 y without any problems. mby the sony vaio z is better in build quality/feeling, but it's also much more expensive. if u don't use your notebook 24/7 and carry it around everyday, i think u are better off with a cheaper one.

    Thank you TinyRK

I am ready to order a bare-bones T410 and an extra 4 gb ddr3 sodimm + an 80 gb ssd.

Noise factor was more important than anything else and i did not want a roughly 2 pound more machine ( read T510) just because of that lone reason.

Is the free dimm slot access underneath the keyboard or at the back?

    Thank you in advance

    Again,
this is objective. So everybody has a different opinion about the fan.

    Both.
I guess they would put the factory installed one under the keyboard,
so the one on the back is available.

Check the 1st page - a lot of reviews ;)
