    Lenovo Thinkpad is not detecting transcend 250 GB external hard disk

    Lenovo Thinkpad is not detecting transcend 250 GB external hard disk
    Its not even showing in the Disk Management.
    I have updated bios also
    and the same external hard disk is detected on other laptops and desktops

    Please help me sort out this problem
    I have tried every thing

    maybe the usb doesn't have enough power. Try plugging external power to the usb hdd.

    Although which Thinkpad are you using and what OS are you running on it.

    I have Lenovo Thinkpad T410 with XP
    I also think so, power is the issue
    But how could i apply external power to my hard disk
    It has got only a USB connector without any external power connector

    what is so funny about that? i don't see the humor in it. If the hdd ran in usb 1.1 mode, it would need one usb for data and another for extra power.

    I'm not as knowledgeable as you so I sounded funny to me. Nothing wrong with the advice at all though, hopefully the op finds a way to solve the issue.

    did you use the y cable that came with the system? did you plug both of the usb into ports.

    Yes i have plugged both usb in usb ports
    But nothing happened

    Try out the following

    1) Try using the other USB ports. Is the drive not detected when you plug it into any USB port?

    2) lead_org is mostly right. I had a USB DVD writer acting up similarly. Try changing the cable

    3) If the drive is being detected on other systems, run diagnostics to ensure that the hard disk is ok.
