Has anyone ever used the 24hour next business day in house warranty support from Lenovo?
Nothing major wrong with my U300s... but my trackpad is and always has been (see the very beginning on this thread) uneven. The left side is lower than the right and it's difficult to click the left-click button.
It doesn't effect me really, I double-tap to click and almost never use the built left click.
I feel like the uneven-ness is getting worse though, I have the 2yr extended support with 24 next buiness day, anyone have any experience with that? Thanks.

Mini review after using my u300s for a month. I have the clementine orange version with a 256gb SSD, 4 gb ram and a 1.8g i7.
1) screen -I wanted a glossy screen. Images are crisp, clear and bright enough for me. Text looks fine. Video is excellent with no lag. Colors are fairly accurate. I haven't color calibrated it yet, but I intend to. I use Spyder 4 Pro. Overall I'm satisfied with the screen and I should add I wanted this resolution and not the higher resolution of the Asus. Would have loved to have had an option for an ISP panel since I use photoshop, but for my intended use (portability and travel) the screen is fine.
2) keyboard - very good. Best I've used on an ultrabook and I tried most of them - Samsung, Dell, HP, Toshiba & Asus.
3) battery life - fair I can make it through a 3 hour baseball game and have about 20% left. I figured that video streaming would be the best test for the minimum life. I haven't tried to test the extreme end yet.
4) heat - the bottom center (below the top of the keyboard) gets pretty warm during the above video test. I think it would get to the point of being uncomfortable sitting in my lap. Somewhat warm under my hands typing during this but not to the point of being uncomfortable or unusable. During normal usage like word, excel, email & even photoshop the machine is relatively cool.
5) noise - non existent. I don't even know the fan is running.
6) power - it has yet to hiccup on any task I've performed and that includes photoshop.
7) startup - very quick, 15 seconds or less to the desktop. About what you would expect from a decent SSD
8) memory - would have liked to have seen an 8gb option, but again, no hiccups on any task so far. I intend to up the memory to 8gbb soon since someone mentioned that the machine has no problems with it.
9) color - love the clementine orange and the black keyboard. Unique & stylish but subdued. I'm happy that they put all of the junk stickers on the bottom instead of on the palm rests. Makes it look cleaner, classier and who needs to know that there's intel inside and windows 7?
10) cost - I paid $1350 plus tax. That's fair I guess, but for the specs I thought it should be about $1000-1200. Paying for the form factor though.
11) trackpad - can't comment on it yet as I typically use a mouse and have it set to turn off the trackpad when I'm using a mouse. What little I've used it though it was fine. It's a cypress.
12)weight - great, less than three pounds and to me the body feels solid unlike the toshiba and the asus. I do take care to open the lid in the center instead of the sides since the lid/screen is so thin. Not as light as the Toshiba, but to me if feels more solid.
13) wireless - mine works fine, no problems. I use it a lot to stream MLB games. I hook it up to my HDTV through the HDMI port and the quality of the connection is above excellent. The picture on my HDTV is as good as cable.
14) ports - wish it had an SD port for convenience, but not a dealbreaker to me. USB3 port is fast as expected. Would also have like to seen one more USB 2 or 3 ports instead of the included 2.
15) charger - small, light and charges very very quickly.
16) build quality - only imperfection I've found is that the trackpad is not flush on the right side. Since I don't use the trackpad much I haven't noticed if this affects the usability. Other than that it feels more solid than most of the ultrabooks I experimented with. Similar to the HP folio. Lid is flush with the body when closed. The screen/lid doesn't wobble when typing or in use like the toshiba. Overall I'm please with the build quality.
17) ooopps - video chip - no problems and I haven't done any tasks that it couldn't handle. I don't play games, so I can't comment on how much the video chip can handle for that.
Think that about covers it. I'm happy with my purchase and enjoy using it. Glad I went with this item instead of the other ultrabooks currently on the market. -
Order mine March 5th, arrived April 10th. It booted once, and never again. Restore failed as well. Had to call support. Chose a replacement, rather than a replacement part. Big mistake. Current expected shipping date for the replacement..... August 6th. That is 5 months after ordering.
If I had any idea it would have been this long a wait, I would have DYI-ed it.d I am rather sad. I only had it working for a couple of hours, so I know what I am missing. -

The scary thing is it seems most if not all the ultrabooks ( all makers ) have
alot of issues including many that just seem to die altogether.
I dont understand it really as the technology used is really common
well proven/reliable tech. So do you chalk it up to form factor and assembly
issues? -
I would argue that ultrabooks don't fail any more than a standard laptop. -

Just be aware that if you're going to upgrade to 8GB, you'll lose the ability to hibernate.
Basically, the laptop goes to sleep when you close the lid, but if you leave it in standby for a length of time, it'll automatically hibernate - saving the contents of RAM to the hibernation partition (called 'suspend to disk' or S2D). That hibernation partition is only 5.8GB big and can't be increased as it's in a weird format (not FAT16/32, not NTFS, not EXT2/3). Believe me, I've tried every way to increase it but nothing will recognise the file system. As the size cannot be increased to accommodate the increase in RAM, it means that the S2D feature will not work - meaning it'll not hibernate, meaning it remains in standby mode instead and therefore the battery runs out long before the advertised '30 days'. -

I have my 8Gb stick sitting on the desk, just waiting for the replacement. Still no updated shipping time, still has 8/6.
Update:
I have been told that they no longer have or will have the clementine orange ones. Only the grey i7. -

Hi guys. I know I may have talked about this before, but I need to know what's the average hotness of your U300s.
After about a month and a half's usage, I still don't understand how the heat flow works. Sometimes, all I do is browse PDF documents (exam papers), but the underside gets freaking hot. And other times I stream an online movie for 2 hours yet the underside is still cool.
Also, is there any way I can measure the temperature of the laptop at any given time? Is it normal for the laptop to be very hot when it's charging?
What about boot times? Have you guys noticed slower boot time as time goes by?
Finally, battery life. At the start I used to see 3 1/2 hours, but now I am seeing 4hours 15mins on average. This is with WiFi on all the time, and mostly the time is spent on the Internet. Brightness 60%. Is this the same for you guys?
Thanks! -

Anyone using the hdmi port on the u300s to watch things like MLB baseball games or movies? If so, a quesiton for you. I use it to watch baseball mainly. Wireless to my laptop, hook it up to my HDTV through the hdmi port. Picture is actually amazing and rivals cable. Problem is most of the time the sound remains on the laptop. For some reason it occasionally will broadcast through the TV. Any idea on why it wouldn't always go to the TV? I've used the same setup with my ipad - sound and picture go to the TV. The picture using that setup is nowhere near the quality as when I use my u300s. Thanks....................

Does anyone know how to merge the primary partition with that random 20GB partition (that isn't the recovery partition)? I tried before using third party software and all of a sudden, bootmgr was missing and I had to completely restore my computer. I deleted the partition so that it's classified as "free space", but Windows won't allow me to extend the size of my primary.

Weird Problem:
Several weeks ago I pushed the One Key button on my u300s to explore the options. Since then when I try to shut down the laptop from Win7 64bit the screen goes blank like it's off for about 3-4 seconds then a black screen with three options comes up - 1)One Key Recovery 2)boot menu 3)enter setup
The first time this happened I closed the lid at the blank screen not realizing it was rebooting, I thought it was shut down. Later that evening when I was going to use the laptop it felt very hot for some reason. I opened the lid and the screen with the three options was showing. Obviously the thing is not shutting down but rebooting to this screen. It's actively running when closed because the heat indicates so.
If I just close the lid when windows is running it goes to sleep properly and is cool as room temps.
Before I try the one Key Recovery, which I hate to do since I have all my programs loaded, does anyone have any suggestions on how to correct this or has anyone else had this problem?
Tech support wants me to send it in, but I will try the recovery first and some other troubleshooting. I really really don't want to send it in unless I have to. It's the orange 256gb version.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Mine is an i5 model. has a squeaky spot just left to the trackpad especially when I carry it with the lip closed holding there. Came with some small dents around the machine. disappointing QC. Still annoying cypress pad... etc etc
Anyway, I've read many comments saying that fan is negligible, and some even non-existence. But my fan is showing its very existence at this moment. Machine has been running for 30 mins and fan's been running ever since the boot up. Just 4 tabs of Chrome websites. It has quite-ish but very distinct high pitch wind-blowing sound similar to my Sony TX45LP when the sony is loud.
In a quite room it bothers me. With a TV on, I can still hear it.
I am wondering if there is any defect with my fan or simply this fan sound also depends on luck. Also, there are two fans in this machine and when I put my ear near the keyboard, all the sound is coming from the fan near the side vent. The one near the power cord seems to be very quite.
again, really glad to find this forum and will be seeing you around! -
Hi people, I'm looking at getting one of these but I don't need alot of storage space and 30gb is not really alot for an ssd, most apps would end up on the hard drive which kinda defeats the purpose imo.. was just wondering if anyone had upgraded the hdd in one of these to an ssd? I'm assuming they are standard laptop drives with no special connectors etc...

Thank you dan and imessage100! I just tried installing this driver and the two finger scroll is feeling great. Also there is now the palm rejection! which I do not understand why there wasn't at the first place.
This made U300s much more pleasurable to use. Thank you so much
BTW has anyone opened up the CPU and the heat pipe and checked out if there is enough thermal grease in between? just read that quite often, MacBooks have poor thermal grease applied from factory. if no one I am going to open it up this weekend and check it out. I hope I can get hold of some grease til the weekend -

Does anyone have experience and/or tips with removing the "U300s" and "lenovo" logos from the screen bezel? I'm wondering if the aluminum can hold up to some light sanding...
Also, for painting the outside shell (I'm sorry if all of this sounds blasphemous; the U300s is truly beautiful as it is, but I just want to make some small changes), what kind of process and paint should be used if I don't want a permanent design, nor to affect the surface in any negative way? -
Seriously though.... it's a great question. I'm really not sure, but it looks like the Lenovo logo on the outside is just on with adhesive. Have you tried to take it off yet? Keep us posted, and send pics if you're successful! -
If you're really looking for something more temporary... have you considered a skin? -
hello!
I have faced a pretty major problem in the course of disassembly and re-assembly.. haha... I have followed the technical training video and did everything correct as far as I know.
However, my wireless lan card is not being recognized.
Also, my camera is not recognized either. (not a huge problem)
Tried to re-position the card several times, checked the antenna cables to make sure; nothing made the lan card to be recognized by the system. I don't see why the card in the slot will not be recognized. USB port and headset jack are functioning properly on the IO board which lan card is attached to. Is wireless lan card really sensitive to static electricity like RAM card?
Everything else seems to work fine...
Any advice would be a great help. -
@osaat09, update on your disassembly? You ever get the wireless card working?
@oinkmooblah, how about your paint job... have you taken the plunge yet? We'd love to see pics. -
I have not yet haha! An internship abroad has delayed that by at least two months, and now I'm beginning to rethink it. Sadly, I may resell it for the Zenbook Prime when it becomes available. What I would do to transplant that 1080p IPS panel into the U300s' chassis. I wouldn't mind the "last-gen" specs; I'd just love that screen quality with this build quality. Am I being too greedy? XD

Hey folks,
I was able to fix my u300s problem from a post I made a few weeks ago. It involved the notebook not being able to shut down from windows. Lenovo support was worthless and they had given me a Rma# to send it in. I had the item boxed, ready to go, and decided to try one more thing and it worked. No problems since.
Now that I don't have to send it in I'm ready to opeN her up and swap out the ram to an 8 gb stick. You that have done this - can you give me the exact type of ram you used? Of course if I you had problems with it, I'm not interested. Just sticks that have worked and continue to give you no problems. I do Adobe photoshop & audition work so I want to maximize it as much as possible.
Also, isn't it interesting how the new Macpro looks like our u300s? Guess Apple must have liked the design. I know I do.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any responses! -
I haven't had the balls to open mine up yet, but per the specs and others' confirmations, the U300s uses sodimm 204pin ddr3 pc3-8500 or 10660 RAM. - Edit: I'd love for others to chime in though, where did you others purchase your 8gb stick from? Are the specs I found correct?
Earlier in the thread, I linked two places to purchase:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ide...enovo-u300s-owners-thread-41.html#post8395231
So what was the solution to your shutting down problem? -
hey guys,
i have got two questions...yesterday i tried to apply the bios update, but everytime i start the winflash.exe it says that the bios rom version is not the same as the "installed" one. any ideas on that?
second: i installed the awesome new dell trackpad drivers and everything is working fine but the richt click with two fingers dissappeared. that's pretty annoying. is there a chance to tweak this with the registry entries?
best regards

Hi, new owner here of the i7 version in grey.
I have only one issue so far and thought I'd ask around for help here: The USB 3.0 port doesn't work for some reason. I have tried with several devices such as sticks and an external hd. They all work on the other usb 2.0 port. I have also tried deactivating the option "allow the computer to switch off this device to save energy" on the generic usb hubs and usb root hubs like someone had posted earlier in this thread. Now I have no idea. In the device mgr it shows an exclamation mark at the Renesas USB 3.0 host controller and the error message "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use (code 12)". I am pretty sure this is software related problem since the exclamation mark did not show up there in the first place. Any idea how to resolve this? Thanks! -
So, nothing works in the USB 3.0 port at all? (even 2.0 devices?) Has it ever worked since it was new? If so, it may be worth restoring to factory using the One Key Restore; if you haven't installed too many other programs yet.
I'd try uninstalling it completely from the device manager, rebooting, see if it reinstalls and fixes itself automatically. If not, try reinstalling the drivers from D:\drivers\USB3.0 or maybe downloading an update from Lenovo.com...
I've heard others on the thread with usb3 problems, at least one person had to RMA to Lenovo for a replacement... (therourke maybe that was you?)
Keep us posted, good luck!! -
Hi
have had my u300s for 9 months without issue.
yesterday when i picked it up it started a stop/start whirring noise from under the keyboard, right side. The noise goes on for about 20 seconds then stops. and starts again intermittently later in the day.
it sounds like a CD-drive trying to engage a disk (which obviously it cannot be). Only moving part I know of is the second fan on the right, which when checked still seems to be spinning.
Any ideas what causes this and what i should do?
Thanks -
-
-
I only tried usb 2.0 devices since I presently don't have any usb 3.0 hardware. It was the first time yesterday I wanted to check out if the port works. So far I haven't installed any programs. Lenovo only offers the driver version 2.1.19.0, which was installed on my unit (seems to be the latest).
Also I managed to get rid of the resources message (the code 12 message) after turning off bluetooth (which I currently don't need). So I conclude that the usb port is technically intact (hopefully!). Thanks, will try again tonight! -
-
Yeah, I know it's backwards compatible. The port says nothing but it shows up in the device mgr. Lenovo support suspects it is a hardware failure.
-
Yuuuussssss! I finally managed to crack this. What a total palaver though. Just eating breakfast - I'll post my findings and step by step instructions for getting it working shortly. (am I good to you or what?) ;-) -

As for RAM sticks, take a look at my earlier posts for reference

As promised, here are my thoughts regarding getting hybrid sleep/hibernation working on a laptop with 8GB.
A bit of background first:
Those people with the standard 4GB of RAM in their U300s
when you close the lid of the laptop, the laptop will go into sleep mode. You'll notice that the fans will stop and the screen will go off, but the little power light will flash on/off signifying that it's in sleep mode. While this happens, the laptop will lose charge at about 1-2% per hour. At 75 mins, something strange will happen: the laptop will turn back on for a few seconds and then go off completely (the battery and power lights will come on for about 5 seconds and then go out completely). This is the suspend to disk part of the deal - the contents of RAM will be saved to the special hibernation partition. In this state the laptop loses almost no battery power at all and will remain roughly at the same point for days - a bit like being shut down (it will slowly lose charge, but it'll take ages, say about 30 days or so).
Those people with the upgraded 8GB of RAM in their U300s
when you close the lid of the laptop, the laptop will go into sleep mode as usual, but it will not ever go into the hibernation part of sleep - meaning it'll keep draining the battery. Yopu can see this, because the power light will keep flashing until the battery is empty. The reason for this is that there is no valid hibernation partition large enough to fit the contents on RAM into. 5.8GB isn't large enough to fit 8192MB (8GB) of RAM.
Sleep/wake test:
When sleeping, the laptop will wake in about 4 seconds.
When hibernating, the laptop will wake in about 10-12 seconds.
Below is a picture of how the partitions are aligned on the U300s:
More to come -
Be aware that I jumped through a huge number of hoops to get where I am, but I have a suspicion that you won't have to. Or at least... I hope not. So, bear in mind what I'm describing below is actually more theory than practice - I did a lot of partition moving/reconfiguring which I don't think you'll need to do.
So, onwards:
Now, to increase the size of that partition (marked ID=84) from 5.8GB to 8GB, you'll need to change the ID first.
1. Hit the Start button
2. Hover your mouse over Computer and click right mouse button
3. Select "Manage"
4. Go down to Disk Management and view what is there
You'll see a similar configuration to what I've posted above (but with a smaller hibernation partition.
5. Click Start again
6. Type cmd
7. Hold CTRL+SHIFT and hit Enter - that'll run it as administrator
8. Type diskpart and hit enter
10. type:
select disk 0
list partition
(this will show you the partitions but in text format instead of graphically like disk management above)
Now, you'll need to figure out which partition is which - it should be pretty simple. I can't tell you which is which, as I've totally frigged around with mine, meaning they are in a different order to what comes out of the Lenovo factory. Make use of the graphical interface above, along with diskpart to determine which is which. Now you've got it in your mind which one is which, we can delete the hibernation partition.
11. In diskpart, type:
select partition blah (where 'blah' is the hibernation one - it'll be listed as the smaller of the two OEM partitions)
set id=07 override
(this will change the partition type from a hibernation one to a bog standard NTFS one)
12. Go back to Disk Management above and take a look - any changes you just made can be seen already (it updates right away). You'll notice that it says it's in some RAW format - ie. it is not formatted to NTFS. Don't worry about this just now, it is part of how iRST works.
13. Right click the 5.8 GB partition and select delete
14. Right click the Lenovo D: partition and select Extend allow it to extend by the maximum
15. Right click the Lenovo D: partition and select shrink
15. Type 8192 in the box
16. In the free space, right click and select New Simple Volume...
17. It will pre-fill in 8192 for you, hit Next
18. Select "Do not assign drive letter" and hit next
19. It will pre-fill in a format option (NTFS). Simply hit next and then finish
20. Go back to diskpart
21. Type:
list partition
select partition blah ('blah' being the new partition you created)
set id=84 override
exit
22. Now shut down Windows properly
23. Turn on the computer
You *SHOULD* be ready to go. From now on when putting the laptop to sleep, the magic should happen at 75 mins.
The best way to test this is:
Turn on laptop before going to bed, charge laptop to 100%, unplug charger, shut laptop lid, go to sleep (you, not the laptop), wake up in the morning and look at laptop.
Is the power light flashing? (yes = sleep mode only, no = hibernate)
If not, then open laptop - how long does it take to wake? (4 secs = sleep mode only, 10-12 secs = hibernate mode)
Check batter power (99% = laptop went into hibernate after 75 mins, 84% = laptop stayed in sleep mode and drained battery)
Let me know whether it worked for you -
hey chrisbreame,
you've done a really great job so fari really want to try this. do you have any ideas how i can get back the hibernation partition after reinstalling windows? right now my only partitions are the windows partition and a 100mb system partition.
thanks

In other news...
The U300s I had to return to the shop TWICE has now started failing again. Same problem: the keypad and keyboard freeze up and system needs to be rebooted.
Admittedly, the problem is not as pronounced as it was when I had a Synaptics touchpad (now a Cypress) but still. I have no faith in this machine anymore.
This is a real shame. I love everything else about the laptop, but the time has come to claim my money back. This U300s will be going back to the shop where I will get my £899 back.
The next step for me is unclear. It seems crazy to get another U300s considering that £899 will now buy me an Ivy Bridge machine.
What should I replace it with? Should I wait a couple of months? Part of me thinks I shouldn't go for Lenovo next time. I'm even considering ultrabooks as a bad idea all round.
I'd love your advice -
I had my U300s since January without any problem and I know alot of people who had no problem with their U300s, its just unlucky that you had a problem with that machine.
I was also waiting for the U300S update with the 3rd gen Ivy Bridge but lenovo said there will be no ivy bridge update and that the u300s replacement is U310. as we all know the u310 is the cheap and thick version that cannot match the u300s but this is lenovo, they only care about their enterprise customers.
all credit to asus for updating their ux series -

You'll need to shrink the C: drive by 4096/8192 (depends on your RAM). Then create a primary partition of the right size or larger. Next, set the ID to 84 using diskpart. Shut down, and then turn back on - you should be good to go.
If you wiped Windows and reinstalled, then you'll need to do a few more steps before you're finished:
1. Download and install RST (Rapid Storage Technology) version 11.1.0.1006.
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...in7_XP_11.1.0.1006.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=20984
2. Reboot.
3. Download and install iRST (Rapid Start Technology) version 1.0.0.1024.
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/Ot...l-Rapid-Start-Technology-Driver-1001024.shtml
4. Reboot
5. Open iRST (you'll find a little blue icon in the tray) and turn it on
6. Shut down
7. Turn back on
You're ready!
