The FHD display is very low reflection. I get more reflections from my desktop CRT. It is a very sharp and clear display.

Yeah, and that's my biggest problem with high-end laptops. Guess, I'm out of the game till Clevo or AW offer decent AG screens.

Meanwhile, another disappointment is the lack of the 15" FHD AG LEDs... C'mon this is the best AG screen out there... If I find the HD+ not perfect will have to return the system and re-order later.

    HI!
I'm new here and this is my first post
I just purchased my first "workhorse" laptop (w510)
and I was wondering if someone could some up all the possible problems and their common identifiers

I will hopefully be receiving my laptop by April first and would like the shortest possible turn around time if there is a problem
    thank you so much

So far, the 2 most common issues I've seen here - faulty keyboards and overheating.

Ok, I just had mine standing idle on a soft surface w/o good cooling, and now that I get back the GPU is at 37 and the CPUs between 38 and 44. Fan at 2700 or so. That's with default hardwired cooling profiles and ondemand/adaptive power profiles.

Now that I picked it up and write this, temps are a few degrees lower.

Didn't make systematic tests, but under (medium) stress the highest I've seen was mid-60ies for stuff what would drive my T61p to 80.

IOW, for my setup there is quite a bit of room to tune down the fan.

Can any1 suggest good software to repartition my c: only drive without re-installation of the OS from scratch?

I wouldn't repartition the system drive, reinstall from scratch. If you do want to try it gparted will do it. Just make sure you have a backup and make sure you format with Windows 7 to keep alignment.

I'm pretty sure the Windows built-in disk manager can shrink the current partition and let you make a new one. It's been able to do this since Vista.

Yep, W7 disk management can shrink partitions as easy as any third party tools. I was really surprised to see how fast it works.

For you SSD tweakers out there, you have to leave Windows's defragmenter service in Manual for it to resize partitions. If you turned it to Disabled, you can't resize.

You will also be limited to the amount of space available to shrink based on the last block used. Using Perfect Disk to consolidate space, then running the boot-time pass will move system blocks out of the way.

Did you order it in US?

I would go for a Clevo as soon as they offer a nice ANTI GLARE LED screen equal or better quality than that of the W510s. That's the only drawback of the Clevo systems and for me it's also a deal breaker.
So till Clevo learn to provide their fridges with the best screens - no Clevo for me. I hate my super-mega-M17X-R2 capable of eating for breakfast any and every game, with its best of the best RGB LED - because of the reflections - it's a mirror in any lighting other than darkness. So if you really value your eyes - it's time to rethink the priorities. Do you need a dead meat, a system glued to a dark basement room , or do you need a powerful and mobile device? I'm a gamer as well, but will sacrifice the settings to save my eyes a little longer and use my system outdoors and at the office.

Sorry for the outburst...It's just very annoying to want the best performance (AW/Clevo) and being unable to use it because of the screens they have. And those films and filters that some put over the glass to make it look matte - are pathetic waste of time and money as they practically ruin the image quality. So that's it, - either sacrifice the graphics, but have everything else, or sacrifice your eyes and get a fridge ;)

Dear all, I would like to address you some questions:

    1) Is it possible to get the fhd display making the order through the telephone? I read that tyrell_corp had the fhd but it still isn't available on the internet site

    2) In case you can order by telephone, what number should I call, and it is possible to have the coupon discount as well?

3)Does coupons usually are always on the air? I mean: tomorrow is going to expire a good discount coupon, accordingly to the dates found, but should I suppose that another coupon is going to start after or otherwise it is possible that coupons don't repeat for weeks? I'm still uncertain on waiting for the fhd display but at the same time I don't want to miss the discounts...

    4) how does it work for cancel the order or changing components after placing it? the question come because the shipment will take more than 4 weeks and could be that in the fhd option comes while waiting.

    5) Thanks to all!

I'll join you, dariocesare, as some of your questions are similar to mine. Hope, those who tried this before can shed us some light.

I'd also add one more question:
Is it possible to change your current order (upgrade the screen for example) by phone without reordering and keeping your previous discount even if the sale is already expired? I got a very good deal, but the FHD wasn't available and I forgot to call the rep ask for it while placing the order....

I ordered my Thinkpad with FHD screen on Feb 19 and it hasn't shipped yet and I wanted to change the battery and RAM options. I called in last week and made the changes with the rep on the phone, no problem. They sent the update to the warehouse and I get an email back within 3 days with updated order and price. I was told that the change could push my shipping date out by up to 3 days at most.

I talked with 2 reps yesterday and both told me that the FHD may be available late April. They cannot take orders for the FHD's. The way I plan to use is to get a 25 inch Viewsonic monitor for picture and video editing and connect the laptop. I seriously do not feel that FHD will make any difference on the road.

For everyone looking for the FHD, remember that it is a WIDE GAMUT screen. This will make most colors look wrong in non-color managed apps (which is most of them). If you're a Photoshop guy and know all about this, then you know what you're getting into, however if you're not, you may be very disappointed with the colors on the screen. Make sure to research "wide gamut" screens before ordering.

Looks like I'll stick to the HD+ for now as I really don't want another RGB LED with annoying colors... Plus working in the native rez on the road could be a pain.
    How's the HD+ screen BTW?
+1 to orev for the timely warning.

    Aikimox,

I have a T510 with HD+ and find it to be fine. I'm running a couple of notches down from the brightest setting. Colors are vibrant. Here's a post with a couple of pics I took that give you an idea when compared to the five year old 15.4" LCD screen on my ASUS.....

    Lol, ok.
I wonder what chipset do they use in W510? Is it PM55?
Would be nice if they had a different one like HM57/QS57, supporting the IGPs from i5/i7s.
I have a 520M CPU that could be switched with the 720m.
Hmm, would be nice to make a switchable setup and add some 2hrs of battery life to the little beast.

<<<<<< Never mind. I got it.:
    Lenovo ThinkPad W510
    Intel Quad Core i7-820QM (1.73GHz,8MB L2,1066
    Mobile Intel QM57 Express Chipset
    It's getting interesting!
When I get my hands on the system, will do the CPU swap and will see if the mission is possible. This might be a very interesting little wonder.
Imagine i7-620M with switchable graphics and 5hrs battery life (and lower temps of course) looks very possible to me...Worth a shot, anyway!

I've been experiencing the locking up on my w510 when watching movies...quick question: What drivers (video) are people using to avoid this? It appears this common issue is due to the video drivers originally installed on the w510.

    HWinfo32 or HWMonitor.
I think the latest video driver is the ver.8.16.11.8825
But it must be already on your system. Check in the Device Manager.

Hmm, the drivers are not optimized for gaming, guys, FX880M is a professional card, so there could be issues definitely.

ok well I suggest you never try... that way you will never know... or complain.

It could be anything really ,chipset,hdd,ram,W7

I have 0 problems with playing videos, but I had few lockups on fallout (game is a bit crap) and it didn't let me use max settings with it either. so I think its driver/game compatibility issue (not bothered used it as a test)
BF2 64 maps are fluent with no lag whatsoever. (gets super hot if not on the stand! so make sure...
