I just tried to replicate that on my wife's new SL410, and I don't see any unwanted movement. I think you're right, the guy is missing a screw in his keyboard.

I think he addressed it later: it's not the screw. He put a screw in, not helpful.

The W510 uses the same keyboard FRU as the T400s, and also the same keyboard as the new Thinkpad USB Trackpoint keyboard. I just sold my T400s in preparation for the W510's delivery, so I'm expecting a similarly excellent keyboard (I also use the USB keyboard at work). Unless the reviewer's keyboard is defective or there is a defect or problem with the W510's frame, the keyboard should perform just as well as the T400s keyboard.

fyi: I just called in to find my tracking number. If you've order the workstation docking station as well, you're going to have to wait. They're shipping the units now, the stations when they're available.

I can handle that...even if my Thinkpad is halfway across the world in Taiwan at the moment.

I just received the shipment notice also. It doesn't say what parts of the order are shipping, but you may be right that it's the computer and not the dock. Sounds fine to me. Lenovo's web site still gives an estimated shipping date of 2/10/2010.

Right after receiving the shipping notice, Google sent me this link ( http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/marketwire/0582097.htm) to a press release about the NVIDIA Quadro FX. I wonder if these things are connected.

I think you are on to something there. Makes some sense eventhough all indications are the shipping units will have a NVS 5100m.

My order is still pending with 2/16 as the scheduled ship date. I was one of the first people on the board to order (1/11) :(

I ordered on 1/25. It doesn't seem fair that I got in line before you. Maybe the touch screen is holding up your order.

Very likely. Either that or the 6-cell battery that inexplicably fails to ship. It has the same date as the laptop, but is a sub-order. A third item, also a sub-order, shipped two weeks ago (ultrabay).

I'll be ok unless they miss the promised date.

regarding GFX card i don't see much difference in fx880 and the 5100m I have spoken to rep at lenovo and they have confirmed it was re badged fx880

I looked at the 48 core config and it confirmed it, also should note that rep said
it definately is fx880 just another lame name they created just take a look at the canadian site it will explain it.

Lenovo: Our newest workstation will sport FX880
Lenovo: Our just-released workstation has NVS5100
customers: Uh....what happened to the FX880?
    Lenovo: the what?
customers: The GPU you promised, the one all your competitors are using, you know, the one that is designed for 15" workstations!
Lenovo: Oh, that. That might be available later.
    customers: I'll wait.
Lenovo: I meant to say it is just a re-badge of the NVS5100...you don't NEED the FX880...c'mon, you can settle for the NVS.
customers: Uhggg, fine. Let me sign in to your Visa-owners / IBM stockholders / secret decoder ring wearers website so I can get an unspecified discount on the perpetually on-sale price.
Lenovo: Great! Oh wait, you wanted a screen on that...that's gonna delay your order 4 weeks. Oops, too late, come back later, we aren't taking your money today. WAIT! Don't leave, we are selling them again.
customer: Whatever, I just need to get to work.
Lenovo: Great, order received. We'll ship everything to you at once, unless we don't....in which case we may ship accessories as available, unless we ship everything at once. We'll let you know what we decided after it's arrived at your door.
customer: Hey, this receipt says FX880!
Lenovo: Oh, pay no attention, it's the NVS5100, just as specified on our website.
customer: But your website also says FX880 in various places.
Lenovo: Oh, that's just the website, you can't trust it. You are getting the NVS5100. Trust us, we know what we are selling. Besides, it says so right on our website.
customer:Fine, just get me the computer. I'm sure the NVS5100 will be adequate.
    ...
    ...
    Lenovo: *yoink*[NVS5100]
    Lenovo: *plop*[FX880]
    customer: Uh, what just happened?
Lenovo: What? Oh that? That said FX880 the whole time! Who would put a crappy NVS card in a workstation? That's just stupid.

Looks like HP actually differentiates the cards within their Elite line.

HP EliteBook 8540p - NVIDIA NVS 5100 graphics

HP EliteBook 8540w - NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M graphics

Other than the video card, a gun metal finish and wireless NIC, the 8540p/8540w look identical. The w has an FX 1800M listed as an option, but I couldn't find one available.

I dont like this 1 bit I was buying the FX880 I should get the 880.

question to those who may know more about it. there are 3 types of memory around for sale.

    1066 CAS 5
    1333 CAS 7
    1600 CAS 7

question is: will the w510 accept the 1600 cas 7, and is the 1066 equal (video editing) with 1333 cas 7 ?

give no damn about price $

Where did you see the 1600MHz mentioned? As far as I know, the 1600 MHz kit isn't supported. It would likely work, just downclock to a supported speed.

As a basic rule of thumb, get the highest MHz, lowest CAS you can afford. If video editing is your main concern, I'd go for the 1333 sticks. Marginally more memory throughput.

I think they might be the same card. Lenovo or Nvidia just can't keep up with Nvidia's constant rebadging of their products would be my guess.

I ordered low end i7 720QM so I should agree that a 1333 non xmp would be suffice, but it just bugs me that 1066 ver has CAS 5 and im thinking it may be better suited for w510 as it actually says 1066 up to 1333 in tab book i think.
    please prove me wrong.

Hello, in Europe (Czech republic) is "available" W510 with quadro FX880 and T510 with NVS3100 - so i think that NVS is an office solution (NVS5100 is the highest model) and quadro is not available due to exporting pre-configured W510 with FX880 to resellers. That's my opinion...

Czech website is little bit retarded, there were many older models with many configurations on czech market, but on Lenovo site was nothing - simply do not look there. Czech resellers offers all new thinkpads with the same specifications. There must be a difference between NVS5100 and FX880. Question is, if NVS5100 really exists. Look at nVidia website, there is an explanation - three categories GeForce, Quadro (with new models), NVS (NVS5100, NVS3100, NVS2100 already listed)

After reading information on nVidia website, it looks that NVS class was built for their own CUDA :). Hope it's a joke: NVS in W510.

I ordered the W510 on 1/12 and did notice that it was removed from the Lenovo website shortly thereafter. In any case, I just continued checking the order status every other day. The original estimated shipment date was 2/17, which was acceptable to me since it was a brand-new, just announced model.

I received shipment notification last week on Friday, and currently my W510 order is located in Anchorage, AK...so I anticipate seeing it by the end of this week (2/5). My original build summary specified the NVIDIA NVS 5100m:

    60Y8457 SBB NVINVS5100MDIG1GBDDR3ITPM

However, I see now that the NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M is the only choice by default when ordering the W510, so we'll see what I actually receive.

I'm new to the forums here, but as I notice quite a bit of "anxiety" over what GPU comes with the W510, I'll be sure to post physical specs when I receive the new machine and unbox it.

    Welcome to the foums.

A review and unboxing would be greatly appreciated. However, Lenovo's packaging of Thinkpads is pretty bland. Corregated box, laptop in a bag supported by foam inserts and a power supply. I think Apple owners would riot if they got their devices in something so utilitarian :)

Also, in the more money than smarts category, I just bought a second OCZ Vertex Turbo 120GB SSD for the W510. It will go in the multibay and RAID0'ed with the other drive going in the machine proper.

The QM57 chipset does support 4 member RAID. I'm working on an unvalidated assumption you can stripe the internal drive with the multibay addon. If it doesn't, I'll put the drive in another system.

Why RAID SSD drives? You'd loose TRIM support. Also, you linked a USB 3.0 controller? I assume that's for some other computer?

I've been evaluating SSDs for my W510. What made you choose the Vertex? My current choice is the Intel G2. There's a great deal going now at NewEgg, buy a 160GB and get a 40GB free, and both are G2!

I'm aware of this. Some higher end RAID cards support TRIM, but it isn't likely in an embedded Intel product. Worst case, I'll service them every few months or just rely on the garbage collection app OCZ provides.

The W510 supports USB 3.0, so I wanted to have my desktop do the same. The external drive will be used for moving VDMK files to and from the laptop.

The OCZ Vertex Turbo was a top performer when I purchased it. I like OCZ due to their liberal RMA policy and somewhat frequent firmware update releases. I got a second one to match the first.
