Secondly, is there any limiting of the CPU on battery? I remember when I purchased the new Sony Vaio F, it wouldnt go past the default 1.6 ghz (it was the same processor - core i7 720qm) on battery

There is a base frequency with Turbo Boost. I also believe someone mentioned that the other cores will idle at a lower power if not in use.....? (can someone confirm that)

I'm not really good at explaining it but I am sure somewhere in this thread someone else has explained it 10000% better than I ever could
(10000% not 100% because it is OVER 9000!!!!) ... =.= -
@LYuan
Are there any hissing/whining noises from anywhere inside the unit? Especially when being in lowest or highest power mode of the CPU or GPU, or when it's switching between those?
thanks -
Not sure if someone asked... but what is the size of the power adapter compared to the older W500 and T61 series?

not.sure must be referring to the Piezoelectric noise that is pervasive in most last-generation Thinkpads (and particularly the T400s). It would be great if this were fixed in the W510. By the way, does the screen flicker at all on the W510 when you unplug it and plug it back in? It would be excellent if this were also fixed.

variant of discount for now. its just at some point lenovo played their trick and
made it impossible to create new accounts with it. -
I'm looking for a carrying case for w510, the screen size of w510 is 15.6", will that fit in a 15.4" ThinkPad Deluxe Expander Case?

I just posted some first-pass comments on my W510 over on the Thinkpads.com forum.

Well, crap. I can see UPS and Lenovo have conspired to ruin my weekend.

Two days stuck in customs. So, I probably won't be getting it. 2 Day shipping my butt. The only Lenovo I've not had get stuck in customs was my redistributed W510. T41P, T42P, T43, T60, T61P...every single one, but it just delayed it a day. This will be 3 business days at best since the shipping date UPS said (2/4/10) before I get it.
So, can those of you who didn't get screwed by UPS comment on how much thicker it is than the W500/T61 that preceded it?
And where are the pictures? I'd love to see it sitting next to one of its older siblings. -

Just speculating, but it looks like maybe some dispute between Lenovo and US Customs. It's probably why they offloaded my w510 from the plane in Shanghai, to hold shipments in China until the dispute is resolved.
Or maybe trade disputes at a higher level: http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTOE61409J20100205 and http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20100204-723252.html?mod=WSJ_latestheadlines -
I expect a full report with pictures and all once you've had it for a bit of course. At least a couple pics and general impressions would be nice. -
A dorked-up manifest is more likely

My UPS tracking report no longer shows a delivery date but does show that it's supposedly left Shanghai. What is the point of even calling it 2 day shipping?

My w510 seems stuck in customs also, but I got a UPS change not saying expected delivery is 2/8. who knows.

Lenovo shipments coming from Hong Kong tend to live up to the 2 day estimate. I recieved a T400s, battery, 90W power supply, and ultrabay adapter, all seperate shipments from Hong Kong and all 2 days on the nose.
Shanghi seems to be a mostly mixed bag (10 demon bag), but never 2 days.
We saw this same delayed behavior when the 410's started shipping. -
The W510 comes with a 135W power supply, yet an optional 90W adapter shows on the accessories page when you configure online. If the 90W works, why the 135W?
Following this logic, would the ultraslim 90W power supply work as well? -

The best discount I have come across is employee pricing which brings the base model down from $1,599 to $1,359 (15% off). It won't let me apply any of the coupons on the Lenovo homepage at checkout. Has anyone found a better deal?

is the FHD and FHD Multitouch 1080 or 1200?
-
It's a 16:9 screen, so it is 1080.
-
I thought FHD was 1200 and HD+ was 1080??

Tabook is your friend
15.6" (396mm) HD+ (1600x900) color, anti-glare, LED backlight, 220 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio, 500:1 contrast ratio, 60% Gamut
15.6" (396mm) FHD (1920x1080) color, anti-glare, LED backlight, 270 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio, 500:1 contrast ratio, 95% Gamut
15.6" (396mm) FHD (1920x1080) color, anti-glare, LED backlight, 242 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio, 500:1 contrast ratio, 95% Gamut, MultiTouch (touchscreen supports two-fi nger touch) -
The new screen abbreviations come from the TV world. High Definition originally was defined as a screen capable of displaying 720p or 1080i. Then 1080p came along, while in the laptop world, screens with 900 vertical lines were showing up. So here is how it breaks down (as far as I understand it anyway).
These are 16:9 screen resolutions:
HD = 720p = 1366x768
HD+ = 900p = 1600x900
FHD = 1080p = 1920x1080
Now what I don't know is if manufactures can or will list 1920x1200 as FHD. It's certainly capable of displaying 1080p (plus some). Its probably a non-issue though since 16:10 is dying fast and those left aren't aimed at consumers. -
can somebody with W510 FHD panel use Everest Ultimate to look up the manufacturer and model of the panel used by Lenovo?
-
I really love my 1920x1200 t61p but 1080 shouldn't be much of a change

That loss of 120 vertical pixels (and the 141 DPI ... tiny!) is what's keeping me holding out for the W701.

Is anyone ordering their machines with the smart card slot? I thought that they died out years ago?
Also, is there any difference between the two wireless cards beside the upgrade supporting WiMax (which, IMO is a dying technology). -
The entire government (especially DoD branches) uses smart cards to store encryption certificates for identification and emailing. They are definitely still in use.
-
Thanks. -
Does anyone remember how much the FHD (non-multi touch) option cost before they pulled it?
-
I believe it was right around 220-225.

Thanks UPS. Apparently they tried to deliver it this morning. No notice it had cleared customs, made it to my town, or was on a truck, even now. I'd have stayed home, left a note, or SOMETHING to make sure I had that laptop today.
I called it in, and they're going to redeliver today, or so they say.
*edit: they called back. I can pick it up at 5:30. Good enough. I will have pictures posted tonight. -
is there any one who has a w510 with multi-touch screen?
-
Has anyone else received the unit other than me? I'm wondering if your microphone mute button is working. My speaker mute button is, and it works as advertised, but he microphone one doesn't seem to do anything (light doesn't come on, microphone doesn't mute). Do you have to be in a call?
-
Congrats and looking forward to the pics -
