Just wanted to express thanks to kimocal and hrana, who provided me with their reps' contact info. Reading through this thread, I wasn't looking forward to playing telephone roulette, trying to find a rep who was willing and able to deal.

Both kimocal and hrana's reps promised to give equal deals to their referrals, and this is exactly what happened with me. I wound up ordering from kimocal's rep. I added MS Office H&B, 3-year Priority Onsite + TPP, and a 500 GB HD. The rep discounted these items quite reasonably (about 20%), as well.

I ordered my W520 on April 17, and was given an estimated shipping date of May 12. Just when I was resigned to waiting for a month, I received an email today (April 21) that my unit had shipped. Still too early for tracking info. Wish I had sprung for the 2-day shipping, though.

Anyway, thanks again to kimocal and hrana. I may have been able to knock off a few more pesos doing it the hard way, but my buying experience was pleasant and easy, which is worth a lot to me. Of course, I notice that Lenovo is running a new 48-hour sale expiring April 22. But, I'm not about to see what my price today would be. :)

Not a problem. I just took delivery of my W520 today and tomorrow morning I'm sending it back because there is no modem in the unit (unless one can be retrofitted inside). Apparently on the website and emails it didn't mention they would delete the modem but it was written on the box. I made the modem's necessity very clear with my rep but it looks like this screw up will result in a big delay.

My order has stated very clearly. You forgot to check the itemize list they sent with order confirmation.

In his defense, those lists aren't meant for human consumption. They are overly cryptic and hard to read.

I got 2 emails but only one had the itemized list. Both the website and email make no mention of the "NO MODEM" item. Here it is cut-and-pasted list... Is it in there and I'm just not seeing it? I'm fully open to someone saying I'm old, dumb, and blind if it is my mistake.

I just want to say that it is heartbreaking to have to send it back. The machine and display are perfect otherwise. The W520 is a must-have laptop.

yeah unless you techy it is hard to understand...

But in general don't trust anyone always check receipt and order details for anything.

But rep should know about this & it's not hrana fault for sure.

After placing my order two days ago thanks to Hrana and Ukieandrew's information, I realized that the rep used an older quote with a smaller hard drive and slightly higher price. I called in within 30 minutes to have the order changed to the correct quote. The rep said she will put in a request to change the order. It has been two days now and no status. Does anyone know how long does it usually take for an order to be changed? Can you share your experience with having an order changed, if it was successful at all? Thanks.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could check. Using the W520 with two DVI monitors attached to the docking station is a requirement for me.

I second the motion. I'm planning on doing this also. I'm selling my uber-rig old desktop but want to keep the monitors. The dock would make it easier to use them and they are both DVI.

I just read some reviews on wenger synergy. Seems like a solid bag. One question though. What is the biggest laptop it can fit? I also have an old HP 17.3 inch machine, that I sometimes need to carry :(

That's a bummer plympton and novice973. It seemed like those that ordered the color sensor have a later ship date than most. Could just be a bad sales rep too. hrana is sending his back as soon as he received it due to a mix up with a modem missing. Which is more painful?

I was having issues where the screen wouldn't come back after a reboot from windows. I ended disabling a couple things related to Intel AMT/AT in the BIOS and not it restarts without issue. I was worried that it would be due to something that required a return.

I just realized I can't test it because my monitors are both HDMI. However, I did verify that you can use the two DisplayPort outputs to two external monitors, so you could just get the DisplayPort to DVI adapters and voila, you're all set.

Our experience will not help you for sure. Do not call your rep, just e-mail her saying:
"Hi. Per our last phone conversation on (date), when I asked you to make changes to my order: (list all changes your rep should make), you told me that you'll take care of that issue. However, till now I do not see any changes in my order. Could you tell me where could I see that, please?"
Just e-mail your rep something like that so you have it in written. Then wait for the reply.

I've not been able to find any benchmarks comparing the 1000M to the 2000M. I mainly use Photoshop (and possibly Premier) and have no intentions of using the system for CAD. Will I get a huge boost in performance from the upgrade? Is it even worth the upgrade?

Also, I'm already ready to pull the trigger on the system. Can anyone please send me the number to a helpful sales associate that can give me a discount on the system and warranty service?

    Thanks!

Thanks Andrew, I've already emailed the rep a very detailed message with the changes highlighted in bold. She said she is still working on it. It is harder to change the order as time passes so I wonder what is causing the delay. Blessings.

What a bummer. 21st century technology, but inadequate for the lack of a modem from yesteryear. My order says nothing, one way or the other, about a modem, so I don't know what to expect. If I don't get one, now I'll be upset, thanks to you! :)

I received an email at 4/20 8:50 AM saying my W520 had shipped, and the next day when tracking was available it had already arrived in Louisville (4/21 @ 2:17 AM). I was hoping it might arrive here and go out for delivery on 4/22, but since I did not pay for 2-day shipping, I was prepared to see it sit in Louisville for a couple of days, or take a circuitous route through Podunk. If it is delayed due to weather I have no right to be disappointed.

Can you post a picture of what it looks like without the modem ??

Are there anyone else that has a W520 without the modem port ??

There is no modem in the W520 unless your order says so specifically. At this moment I think you can't even configure it with modem through the lenovo web page. Though if you call they should be able to hook you up with one.

I haven't used an analog modem for at least a decade now ;)

I spent several hours this afternoon prepping my new W520. The unit does not ship with SP1 of Win 7 Pro, so there are lots of updates and restarts to get it to the point that you're ready to begin installing other software on it, leave yourself plenty of time. I did run into a BSOD during the process but I think it was related to one of the old drivers that eventually got updated in Lenovo update processing.

After updates and with no additional software installed it boots in under 90 seconds and powers down in under 30 (500GB Hitachi HDD that it ships with). FHD Screen is awesome and bright. unit seems a little thinner than I expected (even though I had the dimensions). The rough surface of the touch pad takes a little getting used to.

Haven't really been able to test speed in everyday tasks yet, which for me will mean more than all of the CPU and GPU benchmarks I've seen.

There is absolutely no excuse I can think of for shipping this wave of machine with the original version of Windows 7 instead of the newest SP1 version.

You can clean install using the Windows 7 DVD and the key under your battery. Assuming of course WinRE can't fix things for you.

    What happens when you boot?

I am not 100% sure because I have never been in this situation. I think if you use the OEM media it will use the embedded SLIC key that shipped with the machine. I believe you can use a retail DVD and the key below the battery to get back up and running but it requires an activation. I don't see that as a big issue since you kinda need to do it.

I believe this is thoroughly documented on this site in gory detail. It's late and I am getting ready to crash. Good luck man. :(

HAHA! It does sound ridiculous but I still need a fax machine too.

I have attached a picture at the bottom.

I'll report back with what I find out from my rep in a few hours. I know the modem actually sits on a separate daughter card in the W520 known as the MDC. I'm not sure it is as simple as disassembling the machine, removing the blank in the socket, and installing the MDC. For what it is worth, a Lenovo tech said that a retrofit wasn't possible last night. Then again, I'm not interested in sending it in to a depot (hence why I bought on-site service) or getting major surgery done on the machine this early in its life. I also wonder if they'll let me keep the old machine if they end up building a new one for me.

The TechNet review photos also show a W520 with the modem. Also, "tabook" shows all the listed W520 models with a modem if I remember correctly. Either way, this situation should have never happened.

Since I've had the machine, I figure I'll post a quick first impression:

The W520 is solid with no keyboard flex and the hinges operate without any slop. The screen is pretty good for computing purposes even when compared to the NEC 24" 2490 IPS panel (one of the best screens out there) I use on one of my desktops for photo editing. I obviously haven't bothered color calibrating the screen until I know what is going to happen to the unit. I didn't find any dead pixels. The machine is a speed demon. RAM and mSATA upgrades are a piece of cake but I didn't complete either one for obvious reasons.

Three complaints I could confirm from this thread: the 9-cell battery is a bit loose, the machine's boot up is rather slow with the 320GB 7200RPM hard drive, and Lenovo shipped the W520 with an old image of Windows 7 that will require a Windows Update. I'll test the slow boot times further by doing a clean Windows 7 install manually once I know the fate of this laptop. The lack of SP1 on the W520 is a correctable but somewhat embarrassing oversight on Lenovo's part. The non-standard sized arrow keys will definitely require adaptation on my part. Also, the CTRL and Fn key placements bothered me but that is an easy fix in the BIOS.

Lastly, when I imaged the machine prior to starting it for the first time I noticed my backup software's bootdisk didn't have drivers for the USB 3.0 ports on the left. I had to connect the hard drive to the rear USB 2.0 port to get it to work. That's about it. My initial verdict? People would be fools to pass up the W520... it is that good.

Good news, it worked as you said with the normal cd :) Thanks.

Anyone know what this Bluetooth 3.0 is? It was included in my quote, though i do not see it as a device in my device manager. Not sure if im misunderstanding what that is.

Bluetooth is like a short-range WiFi connection meant for sync'ing phones, wireless headphones/mics, etc. Read the Wikipedia article. When you turn on the W520, you should see a little green "B" light up below the LCD.

I've been exploring the W520 a bit more and found some interesting tidbits:

    1. Remember the 10-second boot Lenovo blog post touting Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 (EE2.0)? It turns out that I did some exploring on my W520 with the 320GB 7200RPM HDD. The recipe for a 10-second boot includes this:

    Code:
    1. Custom UEFI firmware from Phoenix

    2. Native UEFI mode 64-bit install of Windows 7 (GPT format)

    3. Intel 160GB SSD (M-class)

    4. Driver and service optimizations and tuning

    5. One part secret sauce
Let's deal with the obvious first. I have confirmed my W520 has item #1 (EDIT: I have confirmed the W520 has a UEFI BIOS but whether it is "custom" or not is something I can't confirm). I have an Intel X-25M G2 160GB SSD here which I've owned for a while but haven't installed in the W520 yet. Therefore, my W520 doesn't have item #3. Items #4 and #5 are ambiguous so I can't confirm that Lenovo's Windows 7 install has these tweaks. Now the kicker... the 64-bit Windows 7 Professional on my W520 is *NOT* a native UEFI mode install. The hard drive is in traditional MBR format. Proof is in the screenshot below taken in Ubuntu running gptfdisk.

This can also be confirmed by changing the boot option in the W520 BIOS to "UEFI Only" mode instead of "Legancy Only" or "Both." In "UEFI Only" mode the system will ask the user to pick a boot device because it won't boot MBR mode Windows. So much for EE2.0, eh? I'd be interested to see if people who buy SSDs directly from Lenovo get 10-second boots using the "recipe" above.

I'm sure it is possible to get faster boots on the W520 with some tweaking and a native UEFI install of Windows 7. I will attempt that when I know what is happening with my laptop's modem issue. I'll also try to see if it is possible to get the benefits through the various MBR to GPT conversion tutorials online.

In Lenovo's defense, the blog post does not mention the W520 as a 10-second boot contender. It's interesting to see that the differences between the T520 and W520 may be more than just better CPU and GPU options. We've have reports with the quad display issue and now this EE2.0 boot time issue.

    2. Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD sort of works. The display drivers don't work in Optimus mode.

    3. I know there has been a fair bit of talk of the Intel 310-series' "slow" write speeds. The claimed 10-second boot occurred on an Intel 160GB SSD which isn't that much faster due to the 100MB/sec cap. The Kingston 96GB SSD posted a few pages back and other SSDs are reviewed here. I'm not sure I'm convinced by the negativity towards the 310 just yet.

    4. Lenovo has disabled both of Intel's hardware virtualization support options in the BIOS even though mine came with the XP Mode option. I know Microsoft removed the hardware virtualization support requirement for XP Mode but you'd think Lenovo would activate it for those who get that option.

    5. The W520 makes a strange but faint high-pitch noise when the system is off. I believe another forum member diagnosed this as an issue with the fingerprint reader being active.

    That's it for now.

Pardon my naivete, but how does one image a machine without turning it on?

I read of others' backing up their system and/or creating restore discs prior to customizing it and installing stuff. This makes all kinds of sense to me. But, I'm not sure how they're doing it. It sounds like, in your case, you were going to an external drive.

Does one use special software or Windows built-in software? Are restore discs, themselves, bootable? Can one boot from restore discs or external image and then restore from those same restore discs or image?

    Thanks for any guidance.

p.s. I'm scheduled for April 26 delivery (9 days from order). Last reported leaving Shanghai.

Looking at the following thread, it seems like the mSATA drive connected to the WWAN port might be using the recalled B2 stepping chipsets on at least some of the W520 out there. My understanding is that the primary HDD and ultrabay HDD are unaffected.

    W520 with B2 stepping QM67 chips - HDD/DVD/mSATA a... - Lenovo Community

Can any of the current owners check if you have Rev 04 or Rev 05 when you run "wmic idecontroller get deviceid" (without "") in command line (click on Start, type cmd, right click on the first result and select Run as Administrator). Rev 04 should mean B2 chipset, Rev 05 would be B3.

There is a lot more information in the thread above and it seems like Lenovo is actively looking into it.

You could order a recovery disk straight from Lenovo, apparently. Also, I just took the approach that I had a Windows 7 Professional x64 CD, and (thanks Thors Hammer!) I re-imaged the full machine using that CD and the product key under my battery. After re-imaging, I reinstalled all drivers (none of the user level software except Finger Print integration and color sensor calibration), and everything works great as well as feels cleaner.

Just want to make sure I can run 64-bit virtual machine before I purchase W520. Someone says the Intel-VT can't be enabled inside the bios settings. Is this true?

    Thanks!
