It appears as though the Quadro 2000M outscores the GT 555M found in the new Dell XPS by about 100 points in 3DMark 2011.
I'm assuming this is due to the low resolution the benchmark is run at (1280 x 720) and I assume the GT 555M may pull ahead at higher resolutions due to it haveing a higher memory bandwidth. At which resolution and by how much though I'm not exactly sure...
Either way, for those wondering the Quadro 2000M appears to be a capable card for playing the occasional game. -
I presume you ran 3DMark 11 in Optimus mode. It sure looks like they are somehow not playing along well together. The 1414 score is exactly in the Intel HD3000 range unless I am mistaken.
Scratch that. I mixed up 3Dmark 11 and 3Dmark Vantage. -

Setting the power plan to max performance bumped the 3DMark06 score a little higher. See Result. The 3DMark 11 score remained the same. -
This result is great. I want to buy a business notebook with high graphic power. As thinkpad's were falling behind in that respect since the t510, I was sure this quadro 2000 will not be a real upgrade to quadro 1800 w510 had.
I heard that quadro's being much worse in games then geforce's which they are based on. And I fear optimus, as I read many horror stories (bsod's, game's not starting, game's only using intel hd)
Did anyone tried games on w520, is there any problems? I play mostly coh, total war series, real time and turn based strategy.
I do know that I throw out money in the window with profesional gpu's for gaming... But I want to use only 1 notebook for work and gaming. Beside workstations no one sells high power gpu's with a conservative look. I will not use a gaming rig for work ... -
anywone can tell me if

Hey Thors.Hammer,
This looks pretty good for a business class laptop/graphics. It's about the same as GT555M on Dell XPS 17 ( NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M - Notebookcheck.net Tech ) and its about the same what, I guess, we can expect from the incoming Alienware M14x. For a non-gaming laptop you can't complain there. -

Does anyone know why there is no Windows 7 Ultimate and touchscreen options for this laptop?
-
Is the general recommendation to order via phone or online? I talked to a phone rep who promised to call me back after we talked for awhile and I asked some questions on pricing breaks. Haven't heard back since, emailed him, nothing. Do I just call back and talk to someone else? Or is the internet ordering process seamless enough? Any general advice?

Would be easier for UPS to send it from Germany to the UK the first time round! -
Also, for the SSD, i suggest you add a new thread or ask it in this, many will be willing to help.
Good luck

Should we separate this thread into 2?
One for actual discussion of the W520 and one for shipping?
Hopefully a mod can handle that.
It is getting hard to get to content because of all the shipping discussion.

Sorry, but for those who have recieved their W520, did it come in a box or a box within a box? (did they change it?) Just wondering because earlier, I ordered a laptop and it only came in a single box and it was really banged up (dents and had a small hole in it).
-
It came in a box - was not double-boxed.
-
Some resellers ship the Lenovo box in another box. Lenovo packaging? Hah, please don't make me laugh!
-
Could somebody weigh the W520 and provide an exact weight (please also state battery size)?
My apologies if it has been mentioned already in this thread. I have read through the thread but did not find it.
Thanks! -
The optical drive (12.7mm, Ultrabay Enhanced drive) in W520 is removable. You can replace it with a blu-ray drive in the future if you want. Lenovo offers two types of blu-ray drives:
12.7mm Ultrabay Enhanced drive for: W510,W520,W700,W701,T420,etc
9.5mm Ultrabay Slim drive for: W500,T400,T410,T410s,etc -

LENOVO THINKPAD PROTECTION WITH THINKPLUS ONSITE REPAIR - EXTENDED SERVICE AGREEMENT - 3 YEARS - ON-SITE
$1,773.73 before tax and shipping ($1809.26 total). **EDIT: Sorry for the typo: $1909.26 total.**
I stuck with the i7-2720QM because it is the sweet spot in terms of bang-for-your-buck. Plus, I can always upgrade later if I really get the urge to do so. Unfortunately, judging from the repair manual, the video card isn't swappable otherwise I would have stuck with the Quadro 1000M.
I'll put in three 4gig DIMMs (total 16gigs of RAM) and an Intel X-25M 160GB SDD I have sitting here when the system arrives. I'm told it'll ship in 4/20. -

You will be hosed for these drives. Do a search for a Panasonic UJ260. $125 delivered. BTW this one is a burner too.

I think the UJ240 is 12.7mm although it is $190.
But I have no idea if it fits in our drive bay.

I got over $2000 with the same configuration .

Hello guys this is my first post. Do you guys think this is a good notebook for photoshop and illustrator work or would this be a overkill. If so what configuration should I get regarding the processor, ram and the GPU? Thanks is advance.

Keep in mind ThinkPad's tend to be on the expensive side, but from what i've been hearing, they are worth every penny -

Hi hrana - I just came across this thread and have now registered on the forum, but can't seem to find the PM button to ask for the details of the Lenovo rep you spoke to. Can you please PM me with the details? Much appreciated.

Anyone know a good dock/port replicators for the W520? I just need something with usbs and some form of digital display out (HDMI or Display port). I really want the lenovo dock but it's a bit too expensive (I envy the person who managed to get it for free with their system). Any suggestions?
