Hi guys :) So I'm really close to purchasing this Lenovo Thinkpad, and I've been looking at around at extending the warranty. I'm just wondering what this deal covers? Sounds like any hardware fault for the next 3 years with included courier service, right? Alternatively I'll try to extend the warranty directly through Lenovo, but I can't find out what that'll cost me until I actually get the machine so I can enter the serial on their site. Anyone know how much 3 years warranty (or 2 year extension) would cost?

Thanks, your help is greatly appreciated.

normal warranty covers hardware fault that is not caused by end user, i.e. electrical shortcircuit as the result of liquid spill, etc.

Since you want to keep the laptop for more than 3 years, i would suggest you get a Thinkpad classic instead, like the T410, or even a used T400 is good.

+1 for what lead_org said, im not a TP pro and neither do i own one, but for long term relationships id go for "the real" Thinkpads like T/X series. L series in worst case. If you dont want to spend alot then there is T410i.
But seeing that youre in UK i guess price difference is quite big between Edge/SL/L series and X/T/W series?

Since you said courier service, I'd assume you're not in the US?

Well, considering that with taxes youll have to pay almost 600 uk pounds id go for better laptop from ebay, look for reliable sellers and get yourself something better with better build quality for the same money from some US seller ;)
And no, I think that ebay isnt all about ripping people off, seek wise and spend some time doing so and you shall find your dream laptop :p

Only bad thing about US laptops, in my opinion, is standard 1 year warranty, unless you buy yourself upper end Latitudes or Elitebooks. Thinkpads mostly come with 1 year warranty. But it shouldnt be much of a problem because you can simply extend/upgrade your warranty after purchase. Correct me if im wrong.

I think it's correct you extend the warranty at any time during the initial year. wouldn't I still have to pay import tax on an eBay laptop?

There is on caveat to that. Notebook bought from the outlet have a one year warranty, which cannot be upgraded via normal means. You'd need to purchase an out of warranty extension, which costs more. This is why you have to careful on eBay. They often push of refurbed as new or with three year warranties. Either it is false or the warranty is from a third party.

I guess it depends on carrier.
UPS, i think, automatically calculates taxes and adds them to shipping charges, in other cases they simply send you invitation to their warehouse and then you have to fill in papers and pay taxes (where you can try to "talk" and get your laptop without official taxes :p). At least thats how it is in Latvia, EU.

If, on the other had, i get it shipped with USPS, then its up to local post office worker whether to tax it or not. Usually they miss/skip/ignore and dont calculate any taxes.

If youre not sure, then ask some friend, if you have one, in USA to buy one and ship it to you.

Or you could try to talk with ebay seller so he declares lower value so you have to pay less taxes in case being taxed.

Or just avoid the hassle and buy one in UK/EU.
Different countries have different prices for each model/setup so perhaps little search for European Union retailers could save you some cash or get you better machine.
