I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to upgrade the warranty. I was originally planning on buying the laptop with just an Amex, thereby doubling the regular warranty to 2 years. But it looks like it's a depot warranty, which is pretty crappy as opposed to onsite. So decided to see what Lenovo offers.

I'm looking at the warranty upgrades on the Barnes and Noble site:

[add $79.20] 3Yr Basic Warranty Extension
    [add $151.20] 3YR Onsite
    [add $207.20] 3YR Onsite + 3YR ThinkPad Protection
[add $223.20] 3Yr Priority Support Onsite Warranty
    [add $223.20] 3YR Depot + 3YR ThinkPad Protection
    [add $269.00] 3Yr Priority Onsite + 3Yr ThinkPad Protection

I'm interested in the onsite and thinkpad protection (protects against spills and drops) - is there any reason why onsite is cheaper than depot? I imagine that you would much rather have someone come see your laptop in 24 hours as opposed to mailing it in. Or is that wrong?
Is Thinkpad protection recommended? Or are they shiesty about replacing it (saying you werent using it as normally intended or whatever...).

    Thanks

I think another forumer mentioned this pricing anomaly. All I can say is... get it while you can! :p

Personally, I'm very careful with my electronics, so the accidental protection warranty would be useless for me. It's largely up to personal preference, though.

Ya sometimes resellers or Lenovo's site will goof up. Onsite I highly recommend so your ThinkPad doesn't leave your home/business, TPP in case of life's oops moments (peace of mind just in case your ThinkPad decides to go swimming).

There are a lot of factors to consider here. Are you careful about your laptop, or do you simply not care? As you seem to not like shipping your laptop away, I'd get an Onsite warranty if you plan to upgrade. As long as you keep regular backups of your data to an external HDD or a server, I don't think you need to spend for the Priority support.

    IMO, it's a choice between 3yr Onsite or 3yr Onsite+TPP.

My two cents: I usually don't buy warranties for any of the products I buy, but since I'm going to college (many, many unknown factors!) and I paid a pretty penny for my W520, I went ahead and bought myself 2yr Onsite+TPP. I always take good care of my belongings, but I can't be sure if my roommate will!

I purchased 3-year depot and I'm a happy customer. My X200 begins to show some problems as it approaches 3 years. They ship box and parts usually next day or 2nd day air via UPS.

I was able to persuade my both parents to buy Lenovo (they knew IBM, but they had no idea what Lenovo is).. I made them a believer :)
