So now that Microsoft has officially announced Windows 7 pricing, will Lenovo offer discounted or free upgrades to Windows 7?

I heard around the forum that that is the general consensus. It's at least what I have been waiting for to buy my laptop for college. Maybe tomorrow I'll buy it, unless anyone else can think of a reason to wait to buy a T400.

If you buy a notebook after a certain date you are to receive Windows 7 gratis. If you bought your system before the date then you'll have to buy it as as you normally would. At least thats the way I've heard it. The date is close to July 1, 2009.

colleges usually give out OS's for free or very little money. if youre attending a large university i'm sure thats the case.

I heard tomorrow, June 26, for the free upgrade offer from Lenovo. We'll see.

I could not wait till the rumored 26th, in any case, I should be able to get a discounted copy from my university.

I've been told that if you order a system and receive it after June 26 you're entitled to free Win7. Lenovo sales rep reassured me about this since I ordered my system a few days ago and ETA is on July 7th which should qualify it for free upgrade. Anybody else heard the same?

If I were in your shoes I'd cancel the order before it ships and get something in writing concerning the free upgrade. Otherwise all you have is the word of a nameless CS agent which is worth exactly what you paid for it. Just my .02

I think I will wait until tomorrow for official announcement and try to get something in writing as you suggested. Since I placed my order over the phone, I got a name and official email with a quote from Lenovo sales rep so its not nameless.

If you’ve read the solid reviews about Windows 7, you may be tempted to delay your new PC purchase until it launches. But there's no need to wait; Lenovo will mail you a FREE license upgrade to Windows 7 if you buy a Lenovo laptop or desktop with an eligible Windows Vista® version between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010.

WOOHOO. Can finally order my T400

Can you cancel before it ships to avoid the restocking fee? And then order it after June 26?

Couldn't hurt to try. Call them and "threaten" to return it because you want an upgrade to 7.

No mention of when it will be delivered... perhaps next March? ;) Such was the delay for Vista free upgrades with Dell back in the day. It might not be a bad predicament to just have to buy the upgrade when it's released.

Could you tell me which one's do this for students? I keep hearing people say that but I'm pretty familiar with three major universities and while that have such programs for university owned computers, at none of them is the program accessible to students.

I am aware of the various education discounts and theultimatesteal.com but never anything matching the "free or $10" various people mention. I'm sure it exists in some places, but either it's not as widespread or I'm unlucky enough not to be involved with any of the schools with such programs.

Your university must have an MSDN-AA subscription that includes Windows. If that's the case (like my university), then you get typically the business version of Windows with every generation (XP Pro, Vista Business and I presume 7 Pro down the road).

Another option is if you're an engineer, and are an IEEE student member, you get access to the full MSDN-AA suite. Subscription is ~$30/year, well worth it in my opinion, even not considering the MSDN-AA access.

They will probably ship after Christmas. Campuses like my former one usually don't make it available for a month or two after release.

    From their site:
"Windows® 7 is scheduled to ship October 22, 2009. Customers are responsible for shipping + handling and any tax or duty fees unless otherwise notified."

Hah, really nickel and diming aren't they.

    Hi,

"...if you buy a Lenovo laptop or desktop with an eligible Windows Vista® version between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010"

Does this mean that the Lenovo product must be ordered after June 26th, or shipped after June 26th to qualify?

    Thanks!

I've been told "shipped", not ordered. The reason because your credit card will be billed on the day when machine is shipped rather than when the order is placed. Technically, you BUY your laptop on the day its billed ;)

I very much tend to agree with you on this.

When you order it, you haven't paid for it yet, and hence haven't bought it yet.

Only after it ships do you pay for it...and it seems reasonable that only then, do you buy, and own your Lenovo product.

Just check with your credit card company to find out if they got billed yesterday or today. If it was yesterday, call your sales rep and discuss this matter. I hope they can bend a rule for one day. Insist that you were always under impression that it will be shipped on July 3rd and you will be billed than.

LOL guys, get this, the good news, I was one of the 100 people on engadget to win a coupon code for Windows 7 Home Premium that would bring the price down to $49.99 for up to three copies.

Bad news, I checked my email this morning (entered last night, contest ended at 10PM, winners chosen at 10PM) and had to respond to the email last night by 11PM to be eligible otherwise it would be given to someone else.

    FML. :(

Okay, so I created a quote on Monday for a laptop. if I convert the quote into an order today, do you think I'll still qualify for the free W7 upgrade? Is there anyway to know for sure? I contacted Lenovo, but no one ever got back to me.

just called lenovo support today, told them i was under the impression that my thinkpad would be billed on my credit card 9-13 days after i purchased my order(which happened to fall on the 26th of June) but however, it was shipped out on the 25th!(ARRGGHHHH). Called to tell them i was under the impression that i placed the order so the shipment date/bill date would be on the date i would qualify for the windows 7 upgrade, the salesperson/spokesperson told me that i did not unfortunately, and the only way around it was to receive it, request a refund and reorder it again. anyone else have any luck...?

Ouch - considering the restocking costs; it'd probably be easier/better to just buy the upgrade copy at the promo price which is on sale now. $50 US for home premium, $100 for pro. ($65 and $130 Canadian, I believe)

Apparently it's temporary and "while supplies last".

Only thing I don't know is how all the Thinkvantage and drivers would work... is there a pack that you can usually download? I've only ever used my recovery partition.

Well, I just got of the phone with Lenovo Canada. FYI, the offices of Lenovo Canada will be shut down as of the end of June, and all current accounts have been transferred to the Lenovo USA call center.

Anyways, my new sales contact said that all sales orders made today and after are definitely qualified for the Windows 7 update. And that is the official word. She said it is from the day of order, not the day shipped/paid.

She also mentioned, that there was going to be a fair bit of "wiggle room" with these dates as well. She wouldn't officially say (she really seemed to have her hands tied in what she could say), but it seemed like she was suggesting that although not official yet, that there was a decent chance that orders shipped/paid after today would qualify as well.

Anyone hearing anything else more concrete?

My US sales rep told me that as long as shipping date is after June 26th, the purchase qualifies for free Win7 upgrade (disk in the mail). Win7 promotion is for purchases made after June 26th. Date when you place an order is not a date of purchase. Date of purchase is when your credit card gets billed which is a date of shipment.

Cool. I really hope your sales rep is correct. My unit is supposed to ship on July 9th.

There seems to be some inconsistent information coming from Lenovo regarding this. I have a feeling things will firm up soon.... July 15th is coming quickly.

    Thanks!

Mine shipped on the 25th unfortunately. I was considering buying the upgrade version from amazon but I think I'll wait until my university has it in stock. They have Vista Business for $10, so when Windows 7 rolls around I think it will be much cheaper than through any retailer.

I talked to a Lenovo CSR yesterday, without mentioning the arrival date of my T400. She said I should be able to call them in October (I had to keep track of my invoice to show I bought Vista Business) and for the cost of shipping, they'd send me the Windows 7 discs). I made a note of her name and CSR code for when the time comes.

We'll see what happens come fall.

    A contest for that?
If you pre-order now from Amazon, it's the same price through July 11. And $99 for Windows 7 Pro. MS really wants folks on the bandwagon.
