THinking about perhaps purchasing an X230.

Looking on the Lenovo site, where one can configure the laptop for order, under display, there are a few choices.

The default is: 12.5" HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display, Mobile Broadband Ready, 2x2 Antenna

For $50 more one of the following two options:

12.5" Premium HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display, Mobile Broadband Ready, 3x3 Antenna

    or

12.5" Premium HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display, Mobile Broadband Ready, 2x2 Antenna

I would like some explanation of what those choices are.

For example, I have read good things about the IPS display. Are all three of these IPS display, or only the two marked Premium? If all three are IPS, what is better about Premium?

I thought I read somewhere about the possibility of an outdoor-readable display on the X230. I do not see that option mentioned under the options above. Is that not an option? Or are those the premium versions?

Why the listings about number of antennas and mobile broadband ready? What does that have to do with the display?

Thanks in advance for your help. Thank you.

Premium HD = IPS. If Premium is not mentioned then it is the standard TN LCD.

2x2 wireless option means you would have an option for the integrated camera, while the 3x3 wireless option means you can't get the integrated camera.

Outdoor LCD is only available in the X230t (tablet), and not an option in the ThinkPad X230.

Thanks for the info. With the good reviews of IPS, i guess it is worth paying $50 more for premium.

By wireless, does that mean the wi-fi? Why would someone want the 3x3 then?

And still I do not understand why wireless options and antennas are listed as part of the display?

    What is x230t?

Best $50 you'll ever spend on an upgrade.

Yes, wi-fi. Difference in attainable speeds and MIMO.

Because they are an integral part of the LCD assembly.

    X230T = X230 tablet

    Thanks for the info.

So would one get significantly better wi-fi performance with three antenna version--longer range, faster, etc.?

So, the antennas listed for the display are defiinitely for WLAN (wi-fi), not for WWAN (connection to cellular carrier)? Or both?

Does three antennas rather than two only enable faster speeds (which of course depends also much on the router speed), or does it also enable connecting to a wi-fi signal from a greater distance, connecting to a weaker signal, etc.?

Do these antennas actually stick out of the laptop, or are they internal?

Antennae embedded in the display assembly:

    • WWAN Antenna Main
    • WWAN Antenna Aux
    • WLAN Antenna Main
    • WLAN Antenna Aux
    • WLAN Antenna 3rd -- optional, exclusive camera
Stick out? :D They're routed internally along the lid edges, up to the top.

    THanks for the info.

Again though, what exactly works better for wi-fi if one gets three antennas rather than two. Can one get signals from further away? Connect to a poorer signal that the two antenna version might not connect to?
