    Hello friends,

I'm looking to purchase a 27" external monitor for use with my Y40 laptop. It has HDMI as well as USB outputs, and an AMD Radeon R9 M275 2GB GPU.

What I don't know is what type of specs to look for in the monitor. Will this laptop fully power a monitor above 1920x1080? I've also heard that HDMI won't support anything over 30Ghz rate. Is that true?

I just don't want to spend money on monitor performance that this laptop won't be able to utilize.

    Thank you

HDMI 1.4 spec (found in the Y40) will give you maximum resolution of 4K (4096x2160) at 24Hz. But at 1920x1080, of course you can get 60Hz.

Actually I just got confirmation from Lenovo that the HDMI port on this is 2.0. With that said, and with the AMD Radeon R9 M275 2GB GPU, my original question still stands. I'm having a tough time finding this info through my own searches.

How did you get this confirmation? Was it through their online chat/sales reps? If yes, they are known to always provide inaccurate information, so I would take anything they say with a pinch of salt.

According to the HMM, it has version 1.4: http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_y40_50_series_hmm.pdf

Thank you Incontro! I did receive that information from a chat rep, who clearly gave me an uneducated answer to rush me off the chat. It's very frustrating. Anyways I'm happy that someone has good info (you).

The rep also told me that the maximum resolution is be able to achieve through this laptop would be 1920x1080 @ 60hz. Is that also incorrect? My goal is to have nice resolution to do photo editing on photoshop, so refresh rate isn't really a concern. So if I could increase my resolution at the expense of refresh rate, that would be ok for me.

However, if he was correct and the maximum resolution that can be achieved would be 1920x1080 @ 60hz, then perhaps the limitation lies in the GPU?

To recap this discussion, it's been confirmed that this Y40-70 has an HDMI 1.4. The HDMI 1.4 is capable of the following resolutions
    4096x2160 @ 24Hz
    3840x2160 @ 30Hz
    2560x1440 @ ?
    1920x1080 @ 60Hz

So what I need to know now is what resolution is the AMD M275X GPU capable of? Ideally I'd like to run a monitor at 2560x1440, but I don't have confirmation that this GPU can do this. Lenovo told me that the maximum resolution it's capable of is 1080p @ 60Hz, but Lenovo has also told me several things that are incorrect.

So if you know more about this, please share!

    1440p 60hz works too with HDMI 1.4
