Looking at this laptop as a serious contender for me and my partner (1 each)
Am comparing the two. Just a couple of Q's
How many HDD slots does each have. Any mSATA slots?
Also, how does a single 750m do for gaming? I would be gaming WITHOUT Anti Aliasing. Can anyone give me an idea of how Skyrim or Borderlands 2 runs. They're the two most demanding games I play.
Would you say the Lenovo Y410p is a solid choice. I'm looking for a laptop I can put TWO hard drives into. An SSD and a 1TB 2.5 inch drive. I also want to be able to play most games on at least Medium-High WITHOUT AA (I find AA taxes the system more than anything)
Does the SLI 750M prove it's worth.
I've heard that the WIFI on each laptop is terrible, is this true?
Which of the three (Y500, Y510p, y410p) would be the most "future proofed", when I say that I mean the one with the most upgrade potential and long term, high end performance. I really don't want to purchase another laptop for at least another 5 years.
I am considering the Y500, as I believe it has an mSata port AND a HDD slot AND it doesn't compromise the CPU. Would the Y500 be the best choice of the three?
Side question: What's the cheapest laptop available that's around 14inchs and has a i7, GTX770m and multi mSATA slots + HDD slot?

1. Both laptops have:
- One standard 2.5inch bay that comes with a 1TB HDD
- One NGFF M.2 SSD Bay
- An extra HDD drive bay via an Ultrabay Caddy (you can find these off Ebay)
2. I dont have either games you mentioned, but i can play BF3 on ultra with no AA 768p on the single 750m.
3. Yep. To get a second HDD bay, i provided you to a link to the caddy:

4. SLI 750M = 770M. Good luck finding the Ultrabay 750M, two months down and i still haven't found one.
5. Y510P
6. Y500 has a weaker CPU (3630QM) by like 10%, but it has the same GPU and a slightly better battery, Only thing is that it doesnt support optimus.
7. Y500 has a Msata port, if you absolutely need Msata, go for the Y500.
6. Probably around 1300-1500$. -
You're a legend! I was actually going to PM you and get some more answers incase I had questions... if I knew how.
I think the Y500 will be our choice. Doesn't look like 42mm NGFF SSD's will be cheaper or high capacity for quite awhile, and I don't know if it's worth it TBH. I'd end up putting 512gb SSD's into each anyway.
My three choices are:
Lenovo Y500 (SLI 750m + 1tb + 16gb ram) + 256gb Crucial M4 mSATA SSD.
Has highest capacity compared to the Y510p/410p,
more powerful choice comapred to the 410p.
mSATA allows easy expansion now.
Lenovo Y410p/Y510p + 512gb Samsung 840 (Pro or Evo ?) SSD
Less storage, but large capacity SSD, will trade the initial 2.5inch drive with the SSD.
410p is less powerful, and we have no clue about whether the extra 750m will come or not.
510p is as powerful as Y500, however I have woes with the CPU (4700 or 4702???)
NFGG M.2 isn't mainstream, limited supply and capacity, high price tag.
410p is cheapest choice.
MSI GT60/70 2OD (With 3 mSATA Slots)
Four slots for storage (three mSATA + one 2.5 slot)
GTX780m (Could go with the 770m to save)
Better quality parts, far less "issues"
Larger, heavier.
Far more pricey.
That's basically analysis of the three options (well, a really summed up analysis), what do you guys reckon. It's a longer term (5 + years) solution. -
Long term solution? Id probably grab a Sager and max it out, or go with an Alienware, since you have 3 years of warranty on those, better looks and better cooling. But if that's out of your budget (2k+) go for a Y series, they aren't bad at all, and according to your needs, i'd grab a Y500 with 750M cards. -
Thanks
That sounds about right anyway. MSI would be the only choice cause my partner loves the looks of it. Alienware is just too expensive.
Looks like the Y500 is the best option.
