They look awesome IMO, any1 knows when they'll be out? im looking for a laptop, i'm kinda sick of using my dell mini 9 netbook (almost bought a sony vaio, but changed my mind at the last minute).

    Anyway, according to engadget
If the Y450 (14 inch) can be configured with the GT 130 then it would defiantly be worth a few months wait.

any1 got any more info/pics of the new y series?

I am in the midst of buying a new laptop. It was between the Macbook Pro or Sony FW390... then all of sudden I ran into the Dell XPS 1640. Then I read about these earlier last year, but I wasn't intrigued that much... however now that I read about the GPU, it got me a bit more excited. I do not game much though, so I'm not sure if it would make that much of a difference.

Please no white keyboards, I hope they will offer it in black or a dark color.

Yeah, I'm not feeling that colorway... as a matter of fact I'm not feeling that design in general. The Dell is eye catching... The Sony is nice.

Do you not like white keyboards cause you don't think they look good or is there other reasons, e.g they get dirty faster? (I've never owned a white keyboard, all of the 1s i have are black).

I really like the new cover design and the orange trim, but yeah I don't like the white surface/keyboard because it will get dirty and change color very shortly. Everyone I know with a white surface/keyboard laptop, either you can see dirty (or more like used) gray marks on all over it or the color of the keyboard started to turn a bit yellowish. If you change laptop every year, then I guess it's ok.

Add some 4000 ATI GPU tech and those notebooks are golden.

I'm really digging that Y450. I will be intently watching for any new news regarding it. I really hope to see them soon. I always thought that Macheads were sort of on their own when it came to undying loyalty, but I see I was mistaken in that thought. Lenovo fans, particularly of the Thinkpads, are nearly as rabid. If the price and reliability of the Y450 is strong, I might just become one of them.

You can expect them sometime in March. They sure do look nice, much much better than the current Y-series. Although the glossy screen alone turned me away, unfortunately :(

Thank you for the up close pics. I love the design. The positioning of the dvd unit is strange and I think it's weird they decided to use the still relatively expensive DDR3 but go for a 5400 320gb HDD while the display resolution is really weak. You can have that res on a $400 15.6inch Acer as well.

Right now, money wise, the new XPS16 and even the Sony FW seem to be the better deals.

I'm looking for a laptop with a large multitouch trackpad. I want to get a Windows-based one and the Y450 is definitely on my shortlist...

...but why use a white keyboard/palm rest? If that was black this would be an easy decision.

I am just about ready to pull the trigger and order one, but now I may wait after reading this:

Either color, if they manufactured a nice led backlit 1600X900 resolution screen, I'd be ready. (My 1920 X 1080 resolution on the Dell Studio Xps that I returned was not in agreement with my 45 year old eyesight. Even when I bumped up the dot pitch).

The gray palm rest shouldn't make a difference. Future coupons or discounts might... :)

    I don't think they'll offer a 1600x900 display, but they'll have a 1920x1080 as an option soon IMO.

Anyone know what is the expected release date of the Y450 & Y550? The most I have been able to see is mid April in Malysia.

I would figure that since the Y650 is available the others cannot be far behind especially since there is not a big difference between the 3 (same keyboard, gfx, etc).

I literally just realized that the Y450 and 550 weren't the 430 and 530.... I guess I just didn't differentiate in my head. Do the 450 and 550 have the same color scheme as the Y650? I much prefer a 15 or 14 inch notebook to a 16". Don't know how I missed that.....

There seems to be no difference between the Y450/550/650 besides the physical size of the screen and obviously notebook size and weight.

The Keyboard is the same which is terrible if you want the Y650 (no numeric pad???) and the ports are the same.

I am planning on getting the Y450 as soon as it is available. The price sounds right if it does come it at $829 and the specs suit me fine.

    Edit: http://www.krunker.com/2009/01/09/a-closer-look-at-the-lenovo-ideapad-y650-y550-and-y450/

That is the link the pics from page 2 of this thread come from. The Y450 is the group shown. One thing I do note is the palm rest area looks most normal in the Y450, where in the Y650 it looks like its an armrest with the high position of the keyboard to accommodate the big multi-touch synaptic.

Yeah I'm definitely leaning more towards the 550 now that I actually know that it exists. :p The 15.4" screen size seems about perfect for me. It's definitely gonna be out by June/July, right?

Yes. From my sources the Y550 will be out very soon from now. However, summer is a big time for electronics and there will be other options then too (along with new components)

Edit: Just a note to you the Y550 is coming with a 15.6" display not 15.4

Yea, Lenovo now has the Y450 up on their site.

I'm disappointed by the processor offerings among other things. Why can't we customize the hard drive size to the promised 500gb? Or at least a p8600 processor?

Ya, looking at Lenovo's International sites give me some hope. It sucks that the USA has to wait for better hardware in the laptops. I hope the update comes soon... I have been waiting a long time for new y 450 to come out.

What are the other options out of curiousity?

I have looked at the Sony Vaio SR, Sony Vaio Z, Voodoo Envy 133, Macbook 13.3, and the Lenovo Y450.

Out of all of them the Lenovo appeals to me in looks and the price is very nice (I could spend $1500 but i would feel better if I spent $850)

I trust Lenovo's reliability and build quality. I have also looked at the Sony SR as well as the CS series, but Lenovo offers the same features if not more for a lower price.

Sony has had the upper hand in styling for a while but Lenovo's new line of Y Series Ideapads are right up there with Sony.

I agree with the last post.

Vaio SR is still a little more attractive, IMO. But the Y450 looks great and I'd rather have Lenovo quality.

Looks like another option has become available w/P7450 and GeForce G 105M. I'm going to wait for P8600/130M combo and a coupon discount. What's the rationale behind slowly leaking out these different spec options?

I doubt they would offer that video card in the US since they don't even offer it on the y650

    My y530 has a 9500m G video card though !!!

They've promoted the Y450 with the 130M since January so I'm fairly confident we'll see it. The Y650, however, has never been mentioned as having the 130M.

I feel the same way about holding off but I am a little tired of holding off since I was in the market since the beginning of the year. I was willing to spend around $1200 so $999 is even better.

I'll probably do the same. I've waited a while for the Y450 to come out and I might as well wait a little longer to get a better graphics card and processor.

I don't want to have second thoughts when buying a laptop.
