I typically have my laptop hooked up to an external monitor for gaming when I am at home and I have recently noticed that there is a significant decrease in performance whenever the lid is shut rather than leaving it open. When I am hooked up to the monitor I only use the external monitor as my display and I have made sure that there in the windows power settings that the lid close action is on "Do Nothing." I am on the latest drivers (340.52) and I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue and if there is a workaround. I would much rather have the lid shut when I am using my monitor.

    Thanks

I'm not so sure the exhaust is exposed with the kid closed. So it could be throttling from heat. The vents are right below the screen between the hinges. You may be out of luck. Especially if you're running games that generate tons of heat.

Edit, just looked at some pictures of my y50, and it looks completely closed off with the lid closed. So I bet it's throttling for sure.

Also, keep in mind the larger grilled area on the bottom is all intake.
