Can anyone who's purchased the touch model from Canada confirm that the screen is glossy. They have incorrectly labelled the display of every touch model to not even include the 'multi-touch' specification, it just states LED AntiGlare Backlight.

    Thanks in advance.

The 870m version throttles out of the box. It is much noiser and hotter. Make sure you can live with those issues.

I'm sure he knows what he's getting into with the MSI and the work around fixes for those issues.

Yeah, I'm okay with most of it, the parts that affects me the most is the screen and keyboard. Both a drastic improvement over the Lenovo (Best Buy Model). I know a SSD would improve day to day performance, so I don't count the fact the MSI has one.

Ordered in Canada this week but not yet received. Web site describes product with Touch/Display spec:

    - Lenovo Y50-70 Touch - 59421841 - Black: Weekly Deal :
    - Display - 15.6" FHD LED AntiGlare Backlight (1920x1080)

We'll see if it actually is anti-glare or glossy (note it doesn't say "matte"). It also shows a standard keyboard on web site, but I've seen posts it may be Canada Bilingual with English and French... no offense but "meh" for my use. We'll see about that. If you buy, I suggest keeping copies of any communications with Lenovo, or web site screen prints etc... to perhaps minimize risk of having to pay any re-stock fees if you decide to return.... Claims of "false advertising" are likely be be met with swift agreement by Lenovo to return without penalty

BTW if you have Aeroplan you can go through Aeroplan estore portal and get double points... or through Visa portal you can save a whole $10 more.... Lenovo Y50 Laptop | 15.6" High-Performance Gaming Notebook PC | Lenovo (CA)

can anyone check the device manager of their y50 and open the batteries section,

tell me how many items are listed there, is it just the ac adapter and acpi compliant method battery, or does everyone else also have the 'microsoft composite battery' one.

I took a screen shot of the keyboard they advertised in Canada, so I can easily return it by saying they made a mistake (advertised the US English keyboard, I got the bilingual version).

Very strict advertising laws in Canada.

How are owners liking the keyboard?
That's the only thing making me feel uneasy about purchasing this laptop. I only have a few days of being able to cancel left.

Seen a lot of posts about keyboard problems while others are loving the keyboard...

If you've seen all those posts, then you know how owners are liking the keyboard.

I'm not quite sure what your question is in that case, to be honest.

As you said, some like it just fine, others are having issues.

You have to push with two fingers and actually click the touchpad. Not just tap it.

I liked the keyboard. Keys had a nice texture to them, felt solid when typing unless really banging hard. Most of the complaints I've seen have been people missing keystrokes when they don't hit a key properly but I had no problem with that for the 2 days I used it. So YMMV.

my complaints of the keyboard are the number pad being too close to the main keyboard. They shrunk the width of the zero button so at first i was hitting the right arrow key instead. but overall im cool with it.

Hey guys, im new to forums and sch but my Y50 came in about 2 weeks ago and I wish i could say it is one of the most amazing laptops I have ever bought, but I cant . I ordered off New egg so it has the i5 processor on it just to clarify. The problem is that whenever I play games the computer randomly makes a poppping sound on the 'num-pad' area then completely shuts off right after. It is not an overheating prolem because i even bought a cooler for it , but the problem continues., I tried playing games with the intergrated card only but it still shut off, this means it is not the nvidia card. Im guessing it could be the harddrive malfunctioning cause it even shut off while watching a movie onine one time. But i am really not sure and worried ill have to send this beast back. Also, i never experience any lag what so ever in games, just a random shut off. Do you guys have any suggestions????????

Don't like it. Feel like if a miss a key slightly it won't register because my finger hits the laptop casing before the key goes down all the way.

Yeah, keystrike reliability can be a bid off. I can overlook it because it's rarely an issue with my typing style - I am not gentle. Plus I freaking love the red backlighting.

you probably just have a defected one. the num pad area is where the subwoofer is so maybe something shorted there, but regardless you should just return it

Anybody have had any problems with the WiFi and Ethernet port? I'm at school right now and i'm not able to connect to the wifi because the computer can't find it but my class mates are able to. :( I also tried to connect through the Ethernet port but that didn't work either for whatever reason. The network notification would show that its trying to identify the network and then disappear and reappear again. -.-
My previous computer could pick up a whole bunch of networks but this one can only find a few. What up wit that?

got it all installed now on the new ssd.

it did just autopicked the key by itself. using rufus to put the .iso onto the flash drive wasn't bad at all. hardest part was just all the damn screws (20 screws i think)

so NO more bloatware and it feels so cleannn.

Seems many people are getting some or the other defect may it be connectivity issues or keyboard issues or random shutdowns.. the question is did lenovo degrade its name by this model!? I mean y510p was a legend of its time! Y50 I dont think will be able to carry its name... what say guys!?

Y510p was definitely an insanely great machine for its time, beating out even clevos in bang for buck I believe as well just being overall great.

Y50 unfortunately cannot live up to its brothers name unfortunately :(. They should have just charged 100 more on each model and fixed all the sub par crap that plagues it (ac 3160, terrible FHD screens, keyboard etc).

Maybe it's just you guys who are having the keyboard problems. I went to my local electronics shop in which they had the i5 model and I tapped around the keys: It seemed perfectly fine. (The storekeepers were giving me a weird look though. :D ) All four corners of every key registered perfectly. I didn't even have to hit dead center.

I realized the red keyboard backlight stays on after the lid is closed ("do nothing" option in power options), this seems like a huge waste of battery, is there anyway to make the backlight go off when lid is closed without changing "do nothing" to "sleep"?

If you are doing nothing when you close the lid, the keyboard being on is the least of your worries. The cpu and screen will also be on. To answer your question though, I don't think lenovo included any timeout software for the keyboard to dim after a certain time. Maybe there's a third party program for it. I've never heard of any program that turns of the keyboard when the hall effect sensor(or whatever they used) is triggered.

The screen is off when you close the lid on "do nothing". All my other laptops with keyboard backlighting turns keys light off when lid closed, I've never seen or heard of this issue prior to the y50.

Mine switches off when I close the lid, when I open it after that it's not turned on, and it switches on almost at the same time as the screen. That looks like an issue with your laptop, not a general Lenovo one.

    Hello Gaming Laptop Newbie here,

I just got my Y50 today but when I tried running a simple game (waves from stream) I was barely getting 10 FPS on it. I was thinking that maybe I had to do something to turn on the Graphics card and it was just using the integrated one. Could anybody help me out here on what it could be. And yes I have the laptop plugged in and in high performance.

    Many thanks

    Update to battery indicator/charging issue.

took another day off work to give it 1 last go before returning to figure out what was causing my battery indicator to not update correctly/ and super slow charging when powered on.
with my fresh install iso i started setting things up, instead of the express setup for windows 8.1 options i chose custom and disabled the auto download install of all drivers and updates.
went 1 by 1 through the driver on the lenovo support page, checking each time to make sure the indicator was still working properly. i came to the first conflict wrt to the intel video driver for 64bit windows 10.18.10.3496(HD audio:6.16.0.3135 on the lenovo page. It installs correctly but when coming back from the restart same old issue with the battery.

so restoring to prior to installing the lenovo intel HD video driver and having succesffuly installed the rest, now went to tackle the windows updates (had 29 mandatory and 4 optional).
same thing occured over there, i was able to install of the windows updates except the intel one, states as follows: intel corporation graphics adapter wddm1.1,wddm1.2,wddm 1.3 software update released may 2014.

so right now everything works great, mostly happy to have my battery working correcly both on ac charging and on battery power. BUT i currently do not have the intel video control panel, so i cannot adjust screen brightness, color calibration, and i have much fewer options in the power options menu.

anyone ever heard of something like this in other laptops?

    Check out Kingfirejet's video.

    Things you'll need:
    - SSD
    - Precision Phillips screwdriver
    - USB-SATA cable

    Instructions (assuming the Samsung EVO):
    1. Install the software on the CD.
    2. Plug in the SSD to the Y50 using the USB-SATA cable
    3. Use the data migration software to clone your hard drive to the SSD
4 .Once the cloning is complete, shut down the comp, and take off the screws under the case using the precision screwdriver. There's 12 screws in total.
    5. Unplug the SATA cable and remove the HDD from the case. There's 4 screws that screw the storage bay frame to the chassis.
    6. Remove the storage bay frame from the HDD, and swap in the SSD.
    7. Plug in the SATA cable to the SSD and attach the SSD back to the chassis. Lastly, Put the bottom back on.

Turn the Y50 back on, and it should be good to go, but faster! I just swapped out my HDD for an SSD a couple days ago and did it fairly quickly. It's a pretty painless process.

I ordered the base non-touch model from Lenovo Canada on June 12th and it shipped on the 24th and I just received it today in Toronto. Pretty impressed considering the estimate ship date was originally July 10th. It has the AUO display and it's honestly not bad. I have two Dell UltraSharp 23" IPS monitors at home and use HP 23" IPS monitors at work, they obviously have a way better display but overall I'm happy with the y50's display. No issues with the keyboard other than the awful bilingual layout, and the touchpad is different then what I'm used to, but I'm sure I can get used to it. I'll be installing an SSD and doing a clean installation when I get home from work tonight.

Well you lucked out and got the better of two mediocre displays. The auo one from reports is tolerable to some degree while the other one, the chi mei, is downright atrocious. Those buying the FHD version will be taking a gamble.

I am still perplexed as to why seemingly nobody has received a boe panel yet

Are you folks who call the Chi Mei atrocious actually using one or are you just repeating what you've heard elsewhere? Mine is Chi Mei and while it is a long ways off from the glorious GS60 screen, it is far from worthless. If others have luck finding a decent IPS replacement then I may upgrade the screen, but it's been perfectly usable these past few weeks.

Some people that post on these threads LOVE to just parrot other people. Even better, they'll form their conclusions and state them as fact without having the Y50 themselves.

Many have posted their thoughts/reviews. Some are OK with the screen, some dislike it, some even returned their Y50 solely because of it. It has been described as adequate, mediocre, atrocious, horrible, not bad - by reviewers doing a review of their own Y50.

So yes, some people are simply repeating what these reviewers said. Others, as I mentioned, were giving their thoughts on the Y50 sitting right in front of them.

Their opinions simply differ from yours.

While certain aspects of a laptop can only be truly judged if you actually own the machine, many can be perfectly determined simply by gathering a good sample of reviews from people who do own the Y50. There are many things I can say about the Y50 without actually owning it. Other aspects are really subjective (do you like the screen, is the default HDD fast enough, is the fan noise too loud) and for those, I agree with what you are implying - you really need to have the machine in front of you to be able to really profess an opinion (or at least an informed one)

The screen issue is a hot topic, because it really is on an individual level - hence the variety of opinions about the screen.

EDIT: Son of a gun, just as I was writing this UPS shows up at my door with my Y50. Time to see this guy in action (finally)!

    My Y50 just arrived.

    First impressions

Device is very slim and slick - photos don't really do it justice.

The glossy bezel is just stupid - why did they do that? Distracting and ugly.

Don't know why the trackpad is so far to the left.

I got the Canadian bilingual keyboard - not really an issue for me (French is my mother tongue) but it's an easy way to claim a mistake on their part and get a full refund if I don't end up keeping it.

Damn this thing is slim. Even the box was much thinner than the box my Y510p came in.

Keyboard has a good feel to it, but not as nice as most Thinkpads I've tried. Better than most other laptops I've had.

Pretty silent when idle (though not as quiet as my Shark 3)

My display is the AU Optronics (AUO36ED).

More in-depth thoughts after I've set it up and run some tests (i.e done some gaming).
