@Theham. As a person who is used to gaming at 96 Hz, 60 Hz is already a big enough drop and it is noticeable. 48 is a little worse but certainly playable. I was more concerned with resell value because I would already value it at roughly $1500 because of the screen handicap

Would any of you guys recommend the y50 touch for games like BF3, The Sims 3, FSX and Minecraft? Considering buying it for many reasons just seeing if it can handle the games i play decently

Hi, I'm planning to upgrade another 8gb ram. Can I know which ram is compatible? 8gb 1600hz ddr3 pc3-12800 1.35v, 204 pin or 240? Or both will work?

Does anyone know if it's possible to disable Optimus on this laptop, since we don't have a BIOS option to do so?
I've been having problems with World of Warcraft not being rendered by the Nvidia card. I'm pretty much at my wits' end with this, as I've tried literally everything I can think of. It turns out that WoW hadn't been detected in the Nvidia control panel as being installed on my computer, so I manually added the executables and changed the global setting to always use the Nvidia card. Thought that would solve the problem, but to no avail. Also have updated to the latest beta drivers, uninstalled lots of Lenovo bloatware, played with power settings, tried uninstalling the Intel card's drivers (doesn't work, completely disables video output), installed/uninstalled Geforce Experience, played with every possible setting in the Nvidia control panel, etc. etc.
At this point I'm really about to go insane. It's just mind-boggling to me that Optimus technology has been around for how many YEARS now? And it STILL doesn't work properly all the time. I'm having a hard time not filling this post with profanity, as I really can't explain just how much hatred I have for this rubbish technology.
If anyone has any ideas how in the world it might be possible to disable Optimus and use the Nvidia card full-time (I don't care about battery life, laptop's plugged in all the time), I'd really appreciate it. -

Hey guys
Just got my Y50 and i must say... pics cannot begin to show how awesome this laptop looks!
The display(chi mei) is average but hardly as bad as people had made it seem(my opinion) .... wouldve loved a better screen but the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages considering the price range.
Missing Keystrokes, faced a lot of problems initially ... but after an hour or so... i think my hands have gotten used it..... taking more time to adjust to the smaller right shifts etc...
Hardly any flex.... unless you press it really hard...
Laptop is incredibly silent during browsing... movies etc....
Speakers are one of the best i've ever heard....its really amazing...
Touchpad is average.... i hate touchpads in general.... and this hasnt swayed me...
Il try to get some y510p comparisons up at the earliest
I'd definitely recommend the laptop to any one who doesnt need the display to be professional level -

Hey guys, anyone tested the new 340.43 drivers?
I read the 340.43 drivers havent caused any compatibility issues... would it be okay to install it directly and skip the 337.88 update? -

Thanks a lot

Anyone else got wifi problems with intel ac-3160?
I did a clean install of windows 8 and it still has problems with games. Webpages and downloads work fine.
Sometimes when connecting to online games, my computer disconnects from the router (Asus RT-N53).
I tried downgrading the drivers from 17.0 to 16.10 and 16.7 from the intel website but it still persists. Windows wouldn't install the default drivers for some reason.
I also tried disabling bluetooth, changing from VHT to HT and off, 5ghz, roaming aggressiveness, but nothing works.
Thanks -
Hey Guys, I don't actually have the Y50, but I was just curious to see if anybody had GTA IV here and if so, have you tried installing the iCEnhancer mod on to it? If so, what's the fps?

Hey guys. So the Y50 has just begun to get listed at different e-tailers here in Denmark, but Lenovo has decided to put the i5-4200H in the "base" model, which is a hyperthreaded dual-core running at 2.8 GHz stock and 3.4 GHz turbo. I was just wondering if anyone happened to have a model with those specs? I'm interested in knowing how much lower the FPS will be compared to the quad core i7 4700HQ or i7 4710HQ.

I have a question.
Does updating the computer to the new Nvidia driver breaks the performance of the card from the default factory driver? -

I created three different ICC profiles using my old Spyder2Express. These were created using the Y50 FHD matte AUO36ED panel. As such these will only work properly on that display/model.
I made one for the normal, cinema and picture modes.
The rest of the info can be found in the readme in the zip file.

I updated the intel chipset drivers from the one that came from lenovo to an updated version directly from intel here.
My current wifi driver is the older version that windows found (16.5), on 5ghz
Now everything seems to work fine with games etc.Sandbag likes this. -
There's a new Intel Wifi driver that just came out, version 17.0.5.8 - pretty big version jump so dunno, might be worth a shot for those with Wifi issues. I just decided to use ethernet, better for gaming anyway.
Still need to know if there's a way to disable Optimus if anyone knows
My current theory is that it might be a problem with Win 8's quick boot feature, because whenever WoW doesn't use the Nvidia card (always after a cold boot), a restart fixes the problem. I've disabled that feature, gonna see if it makes a difference. First cold boot went well, but I'll need a few more data points before I start getting my hopes up... -
I've had my Y50 a few days now (base model, Chi Mei panel) and after comparing the screen to two other (older) screens - one from a 2008 Toshiba Satellite, the other from a 2007 Dell Inspiron E1505, I find that my settings improved the colors satisfactorily and looking at pictures and graphics seems fine. However, ironically the thing I am struggling with the most is reading text on the screen (especially black words on a white background). I've been trying to figure out why this is such an issue and have attempted a number of fixes but I'm still not happy with it because it gives me a headache. I'm already set at 100% so it's not coming from that (125% is far too blurry). I've adjusted the gamma (because the text was too light before), brightness, contrast, changed default fonts and sizes in Chrome as well as WordPad (it seems to be hopeless in IE so I'm not even touching that). It's happening both with software and the internet browser. I've read that this has been reported as a Windows 8.1 issue (not just Y50), but I had Windows 8.1 on my Asus N56JR and I had no problems reading text (although I believe I had it before the 8.1 Update if that makes a difference). So I'm trying to figure out whether this is the laptop or the new operating system for one, and then how to fix it.
One difference I notice between mine and the older computers is that on the older computers, there is more space between lines on the same websites, which aids with easier reading. The old laptops have dimmer screens, which seems to be easier when reading text (less nice when looking at photos), but even when I dim this one, it doesn't produce the same effect. If anything, my old Dell screen looks less white in the background than the Y50. A minor part of the problem seems to be that this resolution makes for smaller text at 100%, but even when I use larger text, I'm still running into the issue. In fact, smaller text looks better on the old screens than larger text does on the Y50. If I'm a couple feet away from both the old screen and the new screen, I can read text on the old screen much more clearly even when I'm using smaller text.
Text on Amazon, Facebook, Gmail, WordPad, etc. is not great... where it looks the best is actually whatever font/spacing is on the chrome://settings/ page. But the biggest issue seems to be the way the words interact with the background behind it. I wish I could be more specific than that! I know at least one or two others have mentioned this issue - anyone care to weigh in? I love this laptop otherwise but once again, I'm dealing with a very basic necessary component and I'd just like to fix it and keep it. Thanks! -
Hi guys I've got one question about the keyboard. I can't see the pictures on line so was wondering: Is the qwerty section of the keyboard separated from the numberpad? If not, at least are the arrow keys separated from the rest so they can be found by touch? Thanks!

I see that Newegg has the Y50 4K model with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD on sale for $1299. The sale price ends today. That seems like a great deal and I'm wondering if I should pull the trigger. I was very involved in the Y50 discussions for the last couple months, but then stopped paying attention a few weeks ago when it was clear that the FHD version of the Y50 was not for me, and the UHD version seemed like it was going to be far too expensive. But if I can get the UHD version with an SSD already installed for $1300, that seems like a no-brainer.
So the question is: I'm seeing talk about a 48 Mhz refresh-rate limit. If I'm not a gamer, will that be an issue for me? Are there any other caveats I should be aware of with the 4K version? -

Try this.... Suppose chrome text is blurry.... Right click on the icon.... Go to properties... Select the compatibility tab.... Select the option which says disable scaling for high dpi
This fixed the problem for me...
But you'll most likely have to do it for every program manually.... -
-
Good luck!
Il let you know if I can find anything else -
-
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've read that the 256gb ssd is actually a samsung evo SSD (meaning I can use RAPID), but the 512gb may not be? I'm currently eyeing the 512gb 4k model (mostly chose this due to the 4gb VRAM) and am wondering if anyone can confirm the brands of the SSDs in the UHD models? Also, what're your real life battery life times looking like (Not gaming!)?
Thanks! -
On the above note I'm also looking to find the battery life while taking notes on lowest brightness on the FHD model.
I get my Y50 on wednesday! Hoping its good, otherwise I'll be getting a thinkpad t440s instead... -
Sorry for not mentioning this a long time ago... For those now happy with text scaling to get Chrome to look right, use Chrome Canary instead. They enabled high DPI text in Canary a couple months ago. It should be updated in regular Chrome later this fall. This goes for 4k people as well as FHD

Another thought on the matte display : the bad viewing angles are most apparent with dark backgrounds/images. If you spend most of your time working with lighter backgrounds, you probably won't notice it as much.
It is a pain for me because the games I play tend to be darker, so the colour shifting is quite noticeable. -
Hi DevdogAZ thanks for the info! I hate when laptop manufacturers do that with the keyboard. I guess I'll keep looking for a new notebook and cross this one off my list!

I got my own Lenovo Y50 a pair of weeks ago and so far I'm enjoying it. A vast improvement over my previous laptop no doubt. However, I think that because of this big jump in quality I can't tell if I'm getting the most out of the specs it comes packing with. The same can be said about the screen (even though everyone else seems to hate it) I just think its incredible I can play videos in 1080p without it freezing.
One other minor issue I've noted is charging a phone via USB. I've had my phone a few times hooked up to my laptop, and the computer reads it and all, but just barely charges it. I'd leave it on the computer for almost hours at a time without a single percent increase in battery life. So I was wondering if anyone else was having this problem. Although minor, I just wanted to know before conducting a full blown investigation with different chargers and different phones and cables and whatnot.
A feature I missed from my old laptop though was its "always on USB port" which let me charge my phone even when it was off. It was useful when I was traveling and needed to charge my phone. I thought that this feature would be present on this laptop as well, but after trying it out one night I found it only works when its on (or sleeping if I'm not mistaken). Is this just a feature that's unavailable on this laptop? or do I have to enable certain settings? Thanks! -
