I think that is a BF3, BF4, EA memory leak issue.

It's a TN panel. I have had the FHD (Full HD) and the UHD (Ultra HD) versions of the y50. Only the UHD is PLS which is Samsung's version of IPS. The TN panel you are getting has poor viewing angles and generally poor color reproduction. However, it is very responsive and seems to have almost no latency which I really like.
The UHD model is awesome at first. It has nearly infinite viewing angles and the pixel density is high so initially it is impressive. For me this wore off pretty quickly since a lot of programs didn't scale well and the yellows were really obnoxiously bad. It also liked to spontaneously change brightness and color accuracy depending on what was on-screen. The 48hz refresh rate and response lag were annoying too. It was nice to look at, but annoying to use. In a year or so it will become a "bad" 4k panel compared to what will be released at that time.
Something else about the 4k model that I haven't seen anyone mention yet is that supposedly Lenovo uses Samsung evo ssd's in their machines but my 256gb model came with a lite-on SSD which was noticeably slower than my FHD model with a Samsung Evo 256 swapped in. The 4k would boot in about 10-15 seconds whereas my FHD with the samsung boots in about 6-8. Also, I have about 40gb's of extra space since I don't have the recovery partitions.
I have not used the FHD touch model but I understand that it has an AUD manufactured screen which is a little better than the Chi-Mei in the non touch. For me, the best models are the FHD's matte or touch whichever you prefer. At this price point, all models have their drawbacks but are all still decent buys imo. -
To check the drivers for the WiFi card you go to Lenovo official website for whatever country your in. Click on Support and click Lenovo Laptops, find the y50 and then refine the results to just Wireless LAN drivers and that should be the latest drivers verified by Lenovo for your laptop.
Edit: Here is a direct link for the drivers page on the UK site - http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/pro...enovo-y-series-laptops/y50-70-notebook-lenovo -
I also have this issue, if anyone can find a fix please report back because it is a massive nuisance.
-
yea, that will be good !! i need to utilize my internet capability.. especially online games
-
I experience 3-4 network drops a day, is this normal or are others experiencing less?
-
Hi Guys,
I have been following this thread for a while and I recently purhcased the Y50-70 as its called in the UK direct from Lenovo UK. Can anyone who has purchased and recieved this model in the UK please confirm the spec below as many retailer sites here in the UK have different configurations.

does anybody here have an idea what could be the difference between Y50(59426255) and Y50(59420895)?
both are Base Touch model and the 255 is about $80 cheaper than the 895.
also, i can't remember a clear clarification if there are FHD-Touch that uses Chimei screens.
i'd like to make sure that i get an AOU/AUO panel when I order my y50-touch cause it would cost me quite a lot to return it if it's chimei considering that i'm shipping it here in the philippines. -
actually im experiencing more than that since my y50 runs 12 hours a day.. includes 3 hours of online gaming..
really,, this issue pissed me off.. but signal drops doesn't happen during downloading maybe a little..
now im interested with the killer wlan card to put in this beast -
I'm really confused about the screen issues with the Y50. Seems like people are not particularly happy with the touch screen. I thought the 4k would be the answer. But there seem to be some negative comments on that as well. I'm left with two questions. First might seem a bit naive, but I've never used Windows 8 or a touchscreen laptop. I kind of think I might just end up using the touchpad rather than reaching out to the screen. Do you all find yourselves using the touchscreen a lot, or if you don't have one do you wish you did? And secondly, the ever-popular comparison question. The other laptop often compared to the Y50 is the Asus N550JK. People seem very pleased with the IPS touchscreen on that model. Specs and price otherwise are very similar. I understand the difference in the GPU but I've still got a desktop. So I'm just not all that worried about slow performance at high res for the most demanding of games. Anyone out there have current thoughts on the Y50, either Touch or 4k, vs the N550JK?
-
Will replacing the WLAN card void the warranty, also has anyone had any experience with Lenovo's own warranty as I am thinking of extending my warranty to 3 years, if it is any good.
Regards,
Invasion -
To the people with network issues: have you guys installed a fresh copy of windows or are you still using the copy that came with your Y50?
I'm just curious since I did a fresh install on my Y50 the day I received it and haven't had a single network problem up til now, even with gaming online, streaming videos and keeping it running for at least 12 hours a day. -
Hello,
I think the only people having issues with networking are people (like me) who have a Qualcomm Atheros AR956x, which isn't a very good network card, as many people have noted issues with it, even people with a Toshiba laptop which uses the same network card. I think the models that ship in the US/Canada do not have a Qualcomm network card and instead have a Intel AC3160 or AC760 which are dual band wireless cards and this is why you are probably not experiencing the issue. If you want to know what network card your device has you can check in Device Manager under 'Network adapters' as I am sure you already know.
Hopefully someone finds a fix for those of us who have the Qualcomm Atheros AR956x network card as it is becoming a growing pain.
Regards, -
I was debating b/w the Y50 Touch and N550JK myself. I ended up pulling the trigger on the Y50 mostly because of the 860M. I too have a desktop and do most of my gaming on that, but I wanted the ability to game on my laptop (which I still haven't really pushed it yet). I probably could have gone with the N550JK and not noticed the difference for day-to-day use, but I'm incredibly happy with my Y50 Touch. My biggest regret was the screen (as it is with everyone), but I went with the Y50 UHD which alleviates the problem. The screen on the UHD is much nicer than the FHD, but the yellows do suffer considerably (I've tried implementing the profiles in the other thread, but it's still very green).
As for Touch capabilities, I don't use it that much. The touchpad has the free scrolling ability, so a lot of what I would have used to touchscreen for can be done on the touchpad. My only issue is that the damn touchpad sensitivity keeps resetting to the default, which is pretty annoying since I like high-sensitivity touchpads. I just got it because, why not? I could have gone with the non-touch, but I do like the edge-to-edge glass, so I'm happy with my decision. -
Can i ask a few questions in regard to the UHD model? Feel free to ignore this if you dont want to
How do you find the locked 48hz affecting general use and gaming?
Is there a lot of hassle with the monitor?
Thanks, im looking at the UHD Model for programming and some gaming
-
Didn't get the elan trackpad version. Synpatics isn't bad I will have a mouse anyway
-
yes it does, perhaps if we would claim the warranty, change the wlam card back to its original one...
-
Oh yeah that is also true, good idea. Lenovo's service guys aren't even all that techie, because a guy earlier on in this thread said he changed the SSD and RAM I think of the device and sent it in for repair to Lenovo, and his warranty wasn't void. Still wouldn't risk it though.
-
kudos to lenovo then haha, HDD also really weak on this laptop,, need to change to SSD or SSHD.. ram 8gb quite sufficient though for daily usage and normal gaming..
i bet only bios flashing would disintegrate the warranty at any cost, coz we need a custom bios to override the turbo boost issue, real gpu boost frequency of 1100mhz without the need to overclock and wlan whitelist(if it really has it)
what do u think mate? -
Yeah the HDD is extremely weak, my boost time is actually slower than my 2 year old Samsung but I guess that might be down to all the bloatware this laptop comes with out of the box (most of which I have removed). Since you have a clean version of Windows 8.1, how long does it take for the laptop to boot up?
About the warranty thing, it does say on Lenovo's documentation and website throughout that any hardware modifications to the laptop are not covered by warranty, so if I were you if you do have any issues and feel the need to send in for repair, put back all the original components as i'm sure you don't want any issues. The turbo boost issue is extremely irritating, it is after 65 degrees Celsius that the CPU goes back to the 2.5GHz clock speed right?
There are lots of issues with this laptop which I believe are software related as oppose to hardware related and I hope Lenovo fixes these issues through updates, if not that, at least if someone finds some fixes. Until then, I will have to live with this dreaded wireless card. -
you're right, actually there's already someone who requested a bios mod in Tech|Inferno forum.. the kind guy who do modding is svl7 and he's really busy at the moment.. i hope he'll make a new custom bios for us which has unlocked special features..
with official lenovo bios update doesn't really promising though -
Wow really? Wasn't aware of this, definitely going to have to check it out. By the way, a lot of people haven't noted this, it is a very small thing but the power button looks gorgeous. It is made up of little circles which just makes it look truly exquisite. Gaming on the laptop has been very good so far from my personal experiences, wouldn't really see a reason to overclock the GPU especially since it will cause the battery to die out faster than it already does. Luckily, battery life isn't a big thing for me.
-
haha, no need to notice about it, i think maybe 3-4 moths later or next year perhaps he'll look into our bios dump,, coz he has hundreds of requested bios to mod.. yea,, the gpu is okay wiyhout boost. just eager to look at this gtx 860m runs with its supposely-operated frequency.. the power button same like y500,y510p and also the 14 inch variant which is really cool though ha2
-
Oh right this is my first Lenovo laptop and therefore it was a new thing to me and I find out more unique than the standard power button with an LED light surrounding it. Oh so basically, we just wait for him to hopefully be able to do something? Looks like we're doing a lot of waiting, Lenovo seriously needs to get down to work. Been running Splinter Cell: Blacklist at 1080p on High settings with a solid 45-48 frames per second which is good enough for me as I don't notice frame drops that well, plus my 4K panel can onlu go to 48Hz anyway so whatever haha. How long do you reckon the GTX 860M will be able to play games atleast on half-decent settings?
-
hmm, i don't know how to say, but i play battlefield 4 online with mixed high-ultra settings and AA off i get 50-60fps along v sync,, played around 3 hours straight.. no frame drops and i notice slow loading due to cpu throttle..
crysis 3,, off course 30-40fps on high with a little gpu oc.. i think this gtx 860m has performed a little great than my previous y510p with gt755m sli... including performance , efficiency and durability..
my late y510p with gt755m sli on crysis 3 only got around 25-29fps on high settings.. n thats amazing for me.. maybe my configuration differs than yours but i can say this gtx is more powerfull than gt755m sli,,, but the benchmarks show the gt755m sli is greater than gtx 860m,, maybe y50 users can say this haha -
Yeah so far I have definitely been impressed with the GPU, also love the fact that the laptop stays pretty damn cool for being such a thin and light laptop. Compared to the Y510p with the 755M SLI which I heard easily surpasses 90 degrees Celsius which is insane. Luckily the surface temperature doesn't get too hot either and is just warm after long gaming sessions, this doesn't bother me too much as I do use a controller to play games. I'm happy with this GPU, was just wondering how long it will be able to run the latest games on high/max settings.
-
definitely,, extremely quiet with gtx inside,, ur right,, y510p is really a heat factory, especially the ultrabay gpu easily get 90-96 C intensively.. then gpu throttled again and again.. this y50 may run heavy games with high settings around 4-5 hours for best, less than 4 hours i bet for safety usage and long time keep.. my record 3 and half hour on batman arkham city high settings
-
I believe everyone has this Qualcomm Atheros card, and those who have fresh Windows install are not having any wifi problems. So, may be it has to do with the drivers.
May be the drivers which come pre-loaded with Y50 have issues and if you do a fresh install of Windows, those windows drivers work efficiently. -
Hey, if you have done a fresh install of Windows, can you please tell me what driver you are running on for the Qualcomm Atheros card?
Thanks in advance -
Yes it is very quiet, currently I am using the laptop on my lap until I get my table and still the laptop doesn't burn my lap like some of my previous laptops. I am pleasantly surprised with the power for gaming the Y50 provides as well as the cooling.

Is there any way to put any kind of SSD (or some prefetch drive) to this laptop other than replace the one mSATA drive?
-
Actually, the majority of people have Intel wireless cards and not that one. Mine came with the 7260.
-
There is no mSATA drive in here. There is only one place for putting any sort of drive in the machine. It's a 2.5" SATA slot.
Movies, pictures, most documents, etc. are rarely accessed. Just use a fairly large SSD (256GB or higher) inside and as the boot drive and get an external HDD for anything else. Heck, with USB 3.0 speeds you can just install games onto an external HDD and they'd run just fine. -
Just placed an order for:
Canada Computers & Electronics | Notebooks, Netbooks & Tablets | Lenovo IdeaPad Y50 Gaming Notebook 59421810 | 15.6" Multi Touch Intel i7-4700HQ (2.4GHz) 8GB 1TB +8GB SSD | NV GTX 860M DVD/RW HDMI BT W8.1 =)
Cancelled my order w/ Lenovo because their shipping date was pushed back a month due to insufficient stock. -
If you can save up to replace that SSHD with a solid state drive, I doubt you'd regret spending the money. I sure didn't.
-
I ordered a lenovo spare part 7260 wifi card as replacement for the atheros card.
Will update you all after i have received and installed it.
First attempt with a normal 7260 card shows the bios whitelist error.
This is the one which i ordered (official Lenovo FRU from the maintenance manual):
1 x Lenovo 20200552 7260 2x2AC+BT PCIE M.2 WLAN V2 -

How do you find the locked 48hz affecting general use and gaming?

Ive heard that the resizing in the 4k is not good on DX11. But im not fused about restarting. As i will have ssd which would make it quick anyway. So if i use 4k in the weekdays for programming, and switch to 1080p for gaming in the weekends all good? Just changing the res in the personalize tab. I appreciate the help. 48hz a big deal? Only loosing 12 frames?
Thanks, im looking at the UHD Model for programming and some gaming -
And since the store I bought it from only has a 7 day return policy, what should I look for when I open and fire it up? Thanks.
-
Its been about 2 and a half months since I started this thread and got the Y50. Going on strong with no performance issues or major setbacks. Only problem for me is the num lock lights up frequently, but other than that the machine is awesome. Keyboard is responsive and doesn't get hot during gaming session. Stuck a 500GB Samsung 840 Evo as well as 16GB of RAM making it a killer multimedia/gaming machine. 8 Second Boot Up time and games open up really fast.

I just received this little beauty. Before I start doing too many things to customize it, would it be worth it to completely delete the C partition, and the recreate it, and install win 8.1 from scratch?

If you do this, be sure to create a Recovery USB drive first (actually everyone should do this anyway), in case in the future you need to restore it to the Lenovo factory default with the Lenovo apps (ie just as if starting it up for the first time). -
Sure. It really doesn't matter what SSD you go with as you'll still see the difference anyway. Now there are some exceptions but for the most part it doesn't matter. I personally went with the 512GB Crucial MX100

Is there anything else I should be doing? I already downloaded all of the drivers from support.lenovo.com for this laptop, and I downloaded the graphic drivers from both nvidia and intel.

Hey guys, I need your urgent help.
I'm about to get this version of the Y50 bought and shipped ( Amazon.com : Lenovo Y50 Touch 4K UHD Laptop Computer - 59423621 - Intel Core i7-4700HQ / 256GB Solid State Drive / 16GB RAM / 15.6" UHD MultiTouch 3840x2160 Display / NVidia GeForce 860M 2GB / Dual Band Wireless AC / Windows 8.1 : Computers & Accesso). My questions are:
1. Does this model really exist or is it an Amazon scam? I mean is there really a TOUCH UHD 4K version of the Y50? I say this because I went on Lenovo's website and didn't find this version, all I found were either 1080p touch versions and UHD non-touch versions. I also went on youtube and didn't find a single video featuring this model.
2. Is this model's GTX 860m a Haswell model? I saw some models on youtube with a Haswell GPU and I'm not sure whether this one has it. I heard Haswell GPUs are alot better for some reason (I'm not an expert).
3. When was this model released? (if it really exists). Because surely if it was released after the 1080p touch model it won't have as bad a display assuming Lenovo updated the screen or something.
Finally, i would like to thank you guys in this thread for all the important info I have read throughout the thread, and I hope you get back to me as soon as possible as I really like this laptop and I will have to make up my mind soon.
-
Is there a version of the Y50 that is NOT 4k UHD (i.e. 1920x1080) but uses the PLS/IPS screen?
-
KlickOnline Company Representative
1. Yes it exists. MS Store sells it here for $1499:
Buy Lenovo Y50-70 4K Touchscreen Laptop, Intel Core i7 - Microsoft Store
We can match that price if purchased directly from us as well (ie not through Amazon).
2. I believe you mean Maxwell GPU's - these are Maxwell.
3. Released a few weeks ago. All UHD displays have yellow issues (you can view multiple comments in more detail on this thread), but the overall quality other than the yellows is very good.
