Lenovo Y50 Owners and Information Thread

Probably a boring question but I'm considring the y50 and I'm torn over the display options.

4k: I'm really curious how well it works in Windows in general. I guess I can still use it at 1920*1080, and it would scale perfectly, with no blur at all, correct? And the full HD screen option is probably worse than the 4k one. But I'm currently using a laptop with a 1366*768 display as a desktop replacement, with external mouse and keyboard, and the little bit of added distance that means. And honestly even full HD at this size sounds a bit crazy to me. And I guess there is no other lower resolution (I mean something even lower than full HD) to which it would scale perfectly?

48hz: to me it doesn't really sound like a problem for gaming, as I would do my gaming connected to the TV anyway. For occasional videos, browsing, work in business apps, etc, is it good? I can't imagine what 48hz would feel like. I hear 30hz is awful and makes it difficult to even aim with the mouse.

I could actually use an external display for work as well, eventually, but the budget doesn't allow that right now, so if it is completely awful for me, I would suffer, at least for a while.

So this screen thing is a little bit problematic for me. If there was a good 1366*768 option, I would probably play safe and go with that...

 

Thats it, now you can test it with TS Bench, or gaming or another benchmark software, check your temps and check if the CPU is thottling.. The log could be disabled as well if you are not interested in the readings. In "Options" there are general settings you might want to check out and configure as needed, they are pretty much selfexplanatory.
As for changing values and such - this is needed if you want to overclock and/or undervolt but not in this case.

I am new to the forum . I recently bought a Y50-70 4K 16 VERSION lanovo laptop.

First i would like to install my ssd on it but i cant seem to find the windows 8.1 cd key to do a reinstallation of windows 8.1 to my ssd. Is there any way to get it install ?
Second i have issues with video playback . I am trying to play 4k video on youtube at full screen and HD 4600 goes to 100 % usage and the video is choppy and laggy . When i use gtx 860m for Google chrome the video its far better at playback and no lag at all .



Any suggestions ?

And i do you have any optimazation tips to tell me ?

I don't have a number at all next to PROCHOT. Does this mean my Y50 won't throttle at all?

 

Beside PROCHOT, ThrottleStop 6.00 reports how many degrees of offset a manufacturer decided to use. If the Intel specified thermal throttling temperature was 100°C and ThrottleStop 6.00 showed PROCHOT - 5, that means your laptop would start thermal throttling at 95°C ( 100°C - 5 ).

ThrottleStop 7.00 combines these two values. It should show PROCHOT 100 which means Lenovo is not using any offset and has left the thermal throttling temperature at the Intel default value of 100°C.

This does not mean your laptop will not throttle sooner. There are several different throttling methods and several different ways to trigger throttling. The PROCHOT (processor hot) method is only one way.

ATG did some testing while gaming and found that ThrottleStop can be easily setup to manage the Turbo Boost throttling that the Lenovo Y50 likes to use.

 

ATG have you checked for throttling with the new bios? yesterday my test shows that the new thermal table is significantly worse. 1.8ghz when playing crysis, 800mhz after 1 minute under double stress.

 

Yep. It throttles to 2,4Ghz as always.

I tried prime 95 (small fft for FPU stress) and furmark, and that was with a -65mv undervolt

 

Alright, 5min Prime95 and Furmark simultaneously running and I get this:

What do you use to monitor the CPU freq?

 

My questions from a few pages back. Sorry if I sound impatient, but I'm kind of waiting for a response to them before I actually order:

1) Is $1099 a good price for Lenovo Y50 (59421855) ? Or should I wait for a price drop maybe ? What about this one on Amazon for $989 ? The difference is that the first one has 16GB RAM rather than 8GB, and a slightly faster processor.

2) How much graphics performance difference would there be between the 2GB and 4GB models of the GTX 860M when I'm doing non-gaming graphical work, such as photo/video editing, etc. ? Would there be any significant difference when I AM gaming (rarely) ?

Note: I'll have a FHD screen, not UHD ..

 

The Y50 for $989 at Amazon looks good. If you buy that one and 6 months from now you decide that you need more memory, you can go buy a matching 8 GB stick, install that and then you will have 16 GB of memory. If you have the money and need 16 GB right now then buy that other model that comes pre-installed with 16 GB. The prices are reasonable. Will there be better prices after Christmas? Usually there are.

When you are not gaming, the Nvidia GPU is usually disabled so extra memory for the GPU is not going to make any difference at all in many, many applications. At 1920x1080, if you rarely game, I would suggest that you save your money and go with the 2 GB model.

I just wanted to let you know that ThrottleStop uses high performance timers within the CPU and follows a monitoring method recommended by Intel. The multiplier reported by ThrottleStop tends to be an extremely accurate look at what your CPU is really doing so you can trust the log file data.

heibk201 - I would suggest running ThrottleStop in Monitoring mode with the Log File option checked so you have an accurate record of your CPU's performance. Furmark + Prime 95 Small FFTs is an excessive load for any modern gaming laptop so that is not a very realistic load. Power consumption of these two programs combined can trigger some severe throttling in some laptops. You can try using ThrottleStop to get beyond the 8 multiplier but this is at your own risk. You should not see any throttling down to the 8 multiplier while playing a game or else something is seriously wrong.

I have one more question. There are two models and 59421833 and 59421855, and they're for $939 and $1099 respectively. As far as I can tell the only difference between them is that the 55 model has 4 GB video memory instead of 2 GB. Can someone else also please confirm this? The price difference seems a little higher so I want to make sure that there are no other different I am overlooking. Both models are listed here:

this is my result of double stress test after 7 minutes. as you can it clearly fluctuates between 0.8ghz and 2.5, but temp was never the temp. btw the screenshot was taken after the test so ignore the last part, and keep in mind this is with a -65mv undervolt
this only happens with the new unit I got for replacement of my old one and it came with v1.14 by stock

It looks like your temperature is getting very close to the thermal throttling temperature during testing. Thermal throttling will cause the CPU to rapidly drop down to 800 MHz.

The best thing to do is turn on Thermal Throttle monitoring in XTU. That should make it easier to see what is going on.

Intel XTU lets you adjust the Turbo Power Limits but I am pretty sure this is not doing anything. The register in the CPU where the power limits are stored is usually locked by the bios. If you need to know for sure, run CPU-Z, click on the About tab, run a report and send me the info so I can have a look for the lock bit. The current limit is usually locked as well.

 

It seems you have the 4710HQ, both your boost/boost short power max is more than double what IXU shows for my CPU, I see a 35x multiplier and 3.5GHz turbo. Is that right?
I have the regular 4700HQ so in my opinion its quite normal you get different results than me..

AFAIK, all Y50 screen exhibit crapness. Plus, the screen for the touch models cannot be replaced, while the one for the non-touch model can be replaced.

I was aiming for the touch model myself, but after knowing the above, I'm now forced to go with the nontouch model.

i experienced another weird issue . When i log in to windows and wait for programs to load from HDD the screen flashes black many times . After all the programs are loaded from hdd the problem stops . Is that a problem with intel hd or with my laptop or with a drivers ?

Is there any way that my 4k screen is bad ? .


This problem only occurs when i boot my computer and log in into windows . If i restart my computer it's not happening . if i come back from sleep mode its not happening . Only when i starts the computer from shutdown .

I use a Logitech mouse too .... mx anywhere mouse . Mine its flashes for more than 2 minutes for about 5-10 times then the Skype loads (is the last program that loads when booting ) and then its stops doing that

 

My SSD arrived, but I'm having second thoughts.

The stock SSHD is a bit slow to boot, but I pretty much only boot in the morning. Games load quite quickly as is. If I replace the hard drive, I'll lose around half of my space.

The only problem I really have with the stock is the way it sort of...spins down frequently. Also, as I mentioned in another post, some games freeze up too frequently.

Essentially, the question I have is this: is it worth losing 200-ish bucks and half my storage space to end the stuttering?

I have a problem.
I recently purchased this laptop and the thing is, during games I'm constantly getting lots of major FPS drops.
even knowing that the graphic card can handle the games just fine and it should be keeping some stable frame rates (even if it dropped the frame rates, shouldn't it be slower without any major "freezing" all the time?
but instead it drops by 20 FPS or more INSTANTLY, meaning that some annoying "freezing" will keep happening.
so for example, it's at 60 fps and it will keep going to 40's or 30's for like 1 second all the time.

I already thought of lots of things that could be causing it, but I just can't really tell what the real issue is.
if anyone could help by at least helping me figure out what causes this (and a possible fix) I would be much appreciated, thank you!

The Cpu starts trottling at about 65C° to 2.45 Ghz...I even saw mine going down to 1.75Ghz. This Game is rather Cpu heavy than gpu heavy so it was because of this. I installed throttlestop and set my multiplier to 30-31 to get constant 3Ghz and it runs way better now. Keep in mind to look your temperatures. Mine go up to about 90C° for the CPU then, but it should be fine since the 4710HQ can handle up to 100C°.

I've experienced this as well. Only on some games, by the way. I've done some googling and it seems like there are two reasons:

The stock hard drive is partially to blame. Some games I've played, like Skyrim and Amnesia, freeze up when a scripted event is happening. I've heard this issue is gone when you replace the stock drive

Secondly, as others have mentioned, the CPU slows down when temperatures rise to 65C. People have used ThrottleStop to fix this.

If you want to see how some people set up ThrottleStop, look back a few pages in this forum. Someone screen captured their settings.

 

Hmm...But then my lazy brain would have to do more research to know how to set it up so I could use both in such a way as to prevent the old stuttering. Blarg.

 

Its not a big deal, you get a case and put it into it and use it as an external hard drive. I did the same thing and it works fine for storage. However due to the very aggressive power saving settings the drive has(I believe this is the cause of the stuttering you experience) its a bit annoying to use it for anything else than storage. For example when I watch a video off it it would stutter from time to time and I can hear the drive spin up. Its because it seems the drive fills the cache and then almost immediately spin down and when the cache is all used it spin up again..and it does that over and over again. and yes, I figure most of it might be due to the CPU since my CPU might easily go over 65C, the games I tried so far are quite CPU intensive and I'm not gaming on the coldest place ever.
I wonder who decided that putting that low limit would be a good idea, that kinda removes the purpose of a gaming laptop haha
I guess I might try throttlestop in situations where I really need the lag to go away, because it is playable - just not if multiplayer related or something
or have you tried to use throttlestop for long periods of time?

See, the only reason I might need extra space is because games take up so much. The external HDD strategy wouldn't work in this case because the whole reason I want my SSD is to remove the stuttering.

That said, I'm way too stingy with money. I'll probably stick with the SSD.

Yeah, the CPU throttling is rather strange for a gaming laptop. I haven't tried ThrottleStop yet, so I can't comment on how much higher your temperatures will go. For what it's worth, I use a cooling pad.

How many games do you have? Right now I have Grid 2 and Far Cry 4 on my 250GB machine and still have over 100GB left. That should be enough for at least two or three current-gen games...which might not be enough for some people, but I tend to exhaust games completely before buying another, meaning I'd probably uninstall them first.

 

I've begun to think that I've overestimated how much space I actually need. Right now, on the stock 1 TB drive, I've got Bioshock Infinite, Skyrim, The Path, TF2, L4D, F.E.A.R, and Amnesia installed. The thing is that most of these games I'm done playing for now. I got a little bored of Skyrim. After finishing a second playthrough of Amnesia, I'll definitely not touching that for a while. I've played hundreds of hours of TF2, so I'm kind of done with that for now. I'm a bit burned out on L4D and I didn't care for F.E.A.R.

So yeah, a 512GB SSD should honestly be fine.

Ordered and waiting on a new lenovo y50 59421855 (i7 2.5 i think, 16 gb ram 1tb hd+8g ssd, 860m 4gb vid card for $1100) and have a couple questions. I went through the last handful of pages and didn't see much of what I was looking for so if anyone has links or faq or something feel free to post it for me.

Basically just wondering besides removing all bloatware and extra apps what are some necessary tweak/fixes right off the bat for this laptop? I remember reading about going into the BIOS right away and changing it from SATA to AHCI? Any other good changes in the bios or settings? I'm probably planning on swapping out (and selling) the 1tb hdd and putting in a ssd so wondering if this is necessary. On that note, what steps do I need to take because this doesn't have an optical drive. Just put an ISO of my win7 disc I have onto a usb and install it on the clean SSD? Are there other steps I need to take to load windows on a clean ssd with a usb drive? Or do I have to do it on the HD first and clone it (read this somewhere?) Any help on that is much appreciated.

Also curious what everyone is doing as far as drivers. Just manually checking device manager and dl'ing drivers from the manufacturers website? (sound/ethernet/vid card/etc) I have read in some places that people had problems just going to the nvidia site and dling the newest drivers.

I've seen some talk on the throttling issues and vid card stuff. Is it pretty much required to use throttlestop (never used it) to prevent the gpu from being throttled. And do you guys recommend turning the setting on (wherever it is) to use the good nvidia card the entire time even when not gaming?

These are just some of the issues i've come across but just trying to make sure i'm prepared for when it comes and obviously want to get the most out of this machine. I only have a 256 ssd but from what I keep seeing it seems like a no brainer to get the stock HD out of there.

Does you new laptop come with Windows 8? If so and you want to keep it you don't have to do anything with the BIOS, just remove the bloatware if you want and thats it.
If you want to fresh install Windows8 I believe you can do it without any problem but I read somewhere you'd have to use the original hdd, though I'm not sure about that. Keep in mind the W8 key is build-in and since its an OEM key it check for original hardware config.

If yo want to install Windows 7 then you need to go into the BIOS and switch to "Legacy Mode".
As for how to install the OS you can do it with a USB stick, you'd need an ISO and a software like Rufus to make the drive bootable.

Drivers - most of them you should get from Lenovo(especially sound, touchpad). Some - like Nvidia, Intel wireless(if your laptop comes with Intel card) - you better get the latest versions.

Throttling issues are with the CPU, not the GPU. I've posted a screenshot with ThrottleStop config a few pages back, look for it. As for the GPU personally I've forced the OS to use the GPU all the time, I don't like that Optimus crap.

 

Yes it does come with win 8 64 bit. I haven't used win 8 and was thinking of putting a copy of win 7 home on the ssd I have here, UNLESS it is relatively easy to make it look like Win 7. From what I've seen win 8 is completely different than past windows OS and from what I've seen I didn't like the look of it. Even with my win 7 I use classic start menu app and stuff, does all that exist with win 8 or is it pretty much how it is and you can't change it?

Good to know about rufus and usb drives I didn't know that. Have always been able to use the optical drive heh. What is the exact reason for changing it to legacy mode like what does that do?

Yea i'll find the throttle config and use that (with throttlestop right?) And also how do you enable the GPU 24/7? Sorry if it's easy I just don't have the laptop yet.

Are there any Y50 touch owners here ?

If so, can you tell me how the screen is for non-gaming purposes ? Because I don't plan to game a lot .. I don't have a problem with viewing angles too (My current laptop isn't using an IPS screen so I'm used to looking at it straight ahead) .. How are the color reproduction and brightness levels for non-gaming purposes (work stuff, web surfing, occasional photoshopping and movies, etc) ?

 

Anyone that has a suggestion ? I tried to google the problem and email LENOVO but i cant get a reliable answer

1) I assume the HDD bay uses the 2.5" SATA connector ? (I intend to plugin a Samsung 840 EVO SSD)

2) I assume the built-in ethernet port has Gigabit connectivity ?

 

-No idea about W8 customization but I'm sure its easy enough. Google it.

1) Yes, SATA3. Yes, SATA3 is backwards compatible with SATA2.
2) Yes. After all it's 2014, I doubt any laptop produced in 2014 has a network card with FastEthernet, think about it..

What is the OS? You can try updating Intel and Nvidia drivers to the latest version(don't use the Lenovo ones, they are pretty outdated)

 

I just reformatted with win7, and it was fairly straightforward, with minor hiccups,

first, I have a downloaded iso of win7, which might, or might not, be different than ripping your win7 disc. also, if your machine comes with the external dvd player, you may be able to use that. otherwise, there's a tool you can download from microsoft's site,

Windows USB/DVD Download Tool - Microsoft Store

which will create a boot drive on your usb stick (you may have to change the file system on your usb drive from FAT32 to NTFS, if you haven't already done-so). bear in mind though, using the utility failed on my Y50 for some reason (win8 OS, perhaps), so i had do it on my old win7 laptop. if it doesn't work for you, i'd suggest using the program that ATG recommends.

second, you do have to go into the bios. for that, there's a second button beside the power button on the Y50 that will boot you right into the bios.

in the bios (not in order):

usb boot --> enabled
boot mode --> legacy
boot priority --> legacy first
usb legacy --> enabled
OS optimised defaults --> other OS

if everything works without a hitch, your machine should boot up in the installer.

the stock drivers are found on a partion on the 1TB drive, so you can just copy them onto a usb drive, or use an enclosure. nvidia has newer beta drivers on their site. driver updates are all on lenovo's support site. the only issue i'm having right now is that my ethernet drivers aren't working.

yes, i had some problems with constant freezing and stuttering while playing games, among other issues. not sure if it was caused by the HD (sleeping, spinning-up), or OS8, but those problems are now both gone.

I also had issues with the hardware video decoders not working with LAV, that too is now resolved with a fresh install in win7

 

My Y50 Touch 512 SSD 16GB Ram 4GB GTX seems to be slow encoding GoPro video about 5 mins for a 2.5 min video. I have the Nvidia control set up to use the GTX but it seems graphics intense programs are being slow at encoding. I just figured with a Graphics card it'd take about as long as the video itself not double the length.
