So I've had my y500 (sli 750m) for about a month now and I've noticed that when ever I shut it off and power it back on the battery has drained. Now I know that electronic devices will drain over time when not used and powered off but for some reason it seems that my computer drains faster then it should. Is this do to the always on usb? I Never use it, when I check in the leonvo energy management program, it says the status of the battery is good. I know that it has the battery gauge function to test the battery but I haven't used it. I'm guessing that it has something to do with the always on usb, is there anyway to turn it off?

    its some other issue

i also get around 5% drain per 12 hours when the computer is powered off (not standby, hibernate etc) and my always on usb is set to off. you can change it from the bios

btw you have an external 750m as well?

Are you sure? What might it be? I fully charged my y500 last night so when I get home I well see how much it drained. How would you go about turning off the always on usb, and if you mean external 750m as in a second ultra bay 750m gpu yes. I bought the dual 750m version.

So I got around to checking my laptop right now, powered on at 91% battery life. I guess to rollerdyke44 saying of a 5% loss of battery per 12 hours is true. I could swear that it has drained more then that before. I guess I just have to keep an eye out to see if that changes.

My laptop was 82% last night (10PM EST), when I woke up (9AM EST) it was fully drained and couldn't turn on.

Here I thought I was crazy. Thats really bad. I know if I don't use my y500 for a couple of days, it will be completely drained. Do you have your always on usb on? What's the condition of your battery. I'm going to run the battery gauge test when I get home and post what happens. I'm wondering if all this is normal just do to the fact that its a 6 cell battery.

Thanks a lot, just read a thread from lenovo's web site and this is a problem that still is occurring. For who ever is reading this thread check out this link, and stay the f*** away from the battery gauge function, unless you want to break your y500.

I also noticed today that my battery never charges to 100%, always 99%. This does concern me a bit. I love this computer, I wanted to get into pc gaming coming from the ps3, and this computer was perfect for the cost and effectiveness at what it does. It seems that as it gets older people keep finding things wrong with it, not gripes and general complaining but serious problems. My guess is if anyone has any problems with their battery, it all boils down to faulty software and the motherboard.

Umm.. is this a good idea? I've read otherwise: Y500: a serious motherboard problem has been prove... - Lenovo Community

Some people are saying that after running the test, they can't even turn their laptops on.... I'd suggest leaving that reset alone for now xD

For what it's worth, I've already run the battery gauge reset twice on my soon-to-be-returned Y500 and nothing ever came of it. It simply fully charged the battery, discharged it to about 3%, and then started charging it again. It never shut off after discharge and then refused to charge the battery like so many others have reported, so I don't think this is an issue that affects all units, but I certainly wouldn't take the chance because it sounds like it is an issue for a lot of people. It's possible it could've been fixed in a BIOS update and those who killed their systems doing this were on an earlier revision. I'm on 2.02, which to my knowledge is the most current one for 650M systems.

How would you go about checking your BIOS version, and also upgrading it. Where there any bugs with the 2.02 BIOS version, and also if you don't mind me asking, why are you returning your y500.

Spam F2 as soon as you turn on the machine and you'll get to the BIOS where you can see the version. I don't know of any bugs. I'm returning mine because it had a hardware malfunction last weekend and can't game without black screen and screech of death.

Not sure. Probably something video hardware related.
