From what I can tell the Windows Refresh/Restore tool only saves essential OS files and configurations. I don't think it does a complete back up of your partition/data. I've never used this feature, but from what that article says it seems that restoring a backup image leaves your personal data intact while only restoring important OS files, so it can't be a complete partition backup. In contrast, the Lenovo OKR tool will do a complete partition backup to an image. Restoring from an OKR image reformats the partition and restores it completely from the image. See this post related to OKR: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/689710-lenovo-y580-comes-tv-card-antenna.html#post8941176.
Windows Refresh could be useful for:
I'm not 100% sure how this Windows refresh tool works, so don't take my word for it.
- Creating lite backups of important system for restoring after potentially corrupted driver installation or minor virus/bug infections.
Lenovo OKR could be used for:
NOTE: OKR restore will wipe all data on the partition and restore it with the saved image data. Also, from what I can tell, the image is always saved to the special hidden OKR partition and cannot be copied elsewhere, so failure of that drive will cause loss of the backup image & OKR.
- Creating a full system backup after a fresh Windows install for future quick & bloatware-less re-installations
- Creating a full system backup to restore from after catastrophic OS failure or major virus infections
Firstly, which of the two images most accurately represents your system? The top or bottom one? I don't recognize the drive names LRS_ESP or PBR_DRV.
Many newer laptops have the OS key embedded in the BIOS, eliminating the need for a sticker. Having said that, if you're just wanting to install a fresh copy of Windows 7 on your SSD and forget about Windows 8, you could probably just reformat your 1TB drive completely, and then just have your Windows 7 on SSD and your HDD for storage (if you ever needed to install Windows 8 again you'd have to request a restore disc from Lenovo)

Hi,
Not a English-speaking native here, sorry for my english.
I follow this guide to downgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7.
I reinstall every drivers and almost everythings works except OKR which doesn't want to make a backup save and the bluetooth.
I don't really care about these.
But my one key theater button don't work. I can change the setting by clicking in the notification bar but pushing the button doesn't change anything.
Lenovo energy management and oneKey Theater are, of course, installed on my computer.
Any ideas about activating the button ?
(I won't be mad if you find any solutions about the bluetooth or the OKR)
Thanks. -
Hello...
this might be a stupid question... but once a msata is installed...i guess it works as jusy another HDD and can be broken in 2-3 partitions so that i can install ubuntu alongside fresh windows, both on msata ssd itself??
and any way to use the preinstalled windows key in a fresh windows 8 install.. any one successful?
and.. i am still to buy one.. but can someone tell me which version is preinstalled on the machine?? it only says
windows 8 64?? is it a pro version or a standard windows 8?
Thanks. -
beTeka: Try uninstalling and re-installing the energy management software. This link might help: Y580 OneKey Theater stopped working - Lenovo Community. To install the bluetooth driver, first press FN + F5. This will turn the device on and allow Windows to detect it.
ashjas: Yes, Windows will treat an mSATA drive just like any drive as far as I know, at least when it comes to formatting and partitioning. My 580 came with Windows 7, so I'm not sure about the product key. I was able to download Windows 7 Home Premium and install it using the original key on my COA sticker. I'd imagine Windows 8 should work the same way as long as you find the right version. -
This question might be a bit stupid
If I buy a Y580 that does not come with a mssd, and I buy a mssd separately, can I still install it? Is there a place for it (slot?) ?
thanks -

My Y580 just came in the mail so. The mSATA ssd I ordered won't be here until next week. I tried creating a complete system image with an Acronis dvd that I have but I can't figure out how to boot from the optical drive. hoping that disabling UEFI will provide some answers. This concerns me because right now my plan is to install the msata when it comes, boot from a windows 8 dvd i have, install it like normal, then delete all of the partitions on the HDD (with the exception of the OKR partition and Lenovo Drivers partition). If I can't get my laptop to boot from DVD, hopefully the iso to usb will work
-UPDATE-
I disabled UEFI and actually was able to boot to Acronis just fine. Practically most of my worries are solved -
Hey guys! Quick question. Which mSATA SDD would you recommend? I'm thinking of Crucial M4 series as a replacement..

Thanks! But I ran into one problem. I need to reinstall my system because it somewhat buggy. But new mSATA SSDs are not currently available. Since 32GB is very small for Windows, I wanted to reisntall Windows on normal 1TB HDD. But, I can't! It says its reserved by OEM. What to do? Please help. Thanks

Guide for a clean install of Windows 8 on a y580 1TB + 32SSD
1. Download the OKR setup disc- http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=cmMp2ZC7. Extract with Winrar or similar program. Burn the iso, then boot from it. Then choose option 2 then wait....
Reference: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ide...hanging-partition-size-y580-maybe-others.html
2. After the reset, install Windows 8 on the SSD Drive 0 Partition 2 with the 29.6 total size and type primary. You should see the two unallocated space there. Don't touch them because it would allow us to use Rapid Drive later. After the installation, enter the product key and don't connect to the internet... Do not reenter the activate code until after you install rapid drive.
3. Download Rapiddrive: RapidDrive for Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - IdeaPad Y470, Y570
Install Rapiddrive: Introduction to reinstalling Windows on the machines built with Rapid Drive
Then restart.
3. Activate Windows 8. If you used an upgrade CD then use the following the directions on this site to activate the product. How to Do a Clean Install of Windows 8 with an Upgrade Disc
4. Install Drivers EXCEPT Lenovo Energy management for windows 8. The lenovo Enegry management tool for windows 8 ruined rapid drive and is the reason I had to clean windows 8 in the first place (did it 3 times to make sure it was energy management fault). You can download the driver at Lenovo Y580 Windows 8 | Drivers Download OR Lenovo's official site
Restart EVERYTIME!
5. Download Install OneKey_Recovery Version 8 OneKey_Recovery.zip
6. Enjoy -
Hi guys!
How about completely clean install of Windows and SSD-HDD linkage? How, in what order should I install OS and RapidDrive software when there's no OS preinstalled, no Lenovo partition and drivers, but completely clean HDD to which I want to add SSD and use it for cacheing? Should I install and boot form the HDD or SSD, how does it have to be done? -
so i am at the start of clean installation, currently at partition management and i dont know which partitions can i remove
Partition 1: WINRE_DRV 1000 MB (Recovery)
Partition 2: SYSTEM_DRV 260 MB (System)
Partition 3: LRS_ESP 1000 MB (OEM Reserved)
Partition 4: 128 MB (MSR Reserved)
Partition 5: Windows8_OS 884.2 GB (Primary)
Partition 6: LENOVO 25 GB (Primary)
Partition 7: PBR_DRV 20 GB (Recovery) -
does this procedures apply to Y510P as well? Sorry if this is a silly question, but I am desperate to look one for me and I couldn't find the tried and true answer. I am planning to swap my stock HDD 1TB with Samsung 840 evo 1TB SSD.

Hello everyone.
I'm using a Y580 with 750GB HDD and 32 GB mSata SSD, Windows 7 on it and I'm planning to buy a new 120 GB mSata SSD and replace it with the stock 32 Gb mSata SSD and install my OS on the new one. Before I buy the SSD and do this, I did some research and I ended up here.
My problem is:
I realised that, my OKR button works well but when I choose to restore the system, pc reboots but OKR doesn't open and Windows opens as casual.
Luckly, I backed up my OS at the first time when I bought my PC to 3 DVDs. Now I wonder, if I restore my pc by using these DVDs, which I created by using OKR, will my OKR open after I start my PC by using this button
If it will work;
If I understood correnctly; when I replace my SSD with the new one and install my OS to the new SSD, I'll be using OKR with the new SSD and I will be able to back up my PC with OKR.
Else;
I'll just replace my stock SSD with the new one, install my OS on it and wipe out all the data in HDD so that I'll be no more using OKR again.
I'll appreciate if you guys help me out. Thank you.Last edited: Jan 14, 2015
