this new lenovo yoga 720 with a cpu i7-7700hq+gtx1050 could be a great laptop for egpu?

Man, most laptops don't support eGPU because they're not designed for gamers. Same story with the Yoga 720 - it's a work/luxury machine - even if it had TB3, the BIOS wouldn't recognize or pick up the eGPU. Calm down already.
-
i know that an egpu needs a compatible bios and also specifical drivers/firmware for tb3 port
Edit
a mbp 15 2016 is a luxury laptop but it is compatible with a egpuLast edited: Mar 16, 2017 -

Thought it shipped in 4-5 weeks? I probably would have ordered, but not keen on silver/grey.

love to hear some preliminary impressions on color gamut, build quality and thermals. I'm trying to decide between this one and the 9560 xps.

Uh oh did they skimp on the screen? That might be a deal breaker.

Did it come with a pen?

Can you run Cinebench 15 on your new machine? I'm curious about the OpenGL and CPU scores.

Discrete Graphics and Small Package
I've been waiting over a year for the perfect laptop to come out. It's very hard to find a 14-15" lightweight form factor with a discrete graphics card that isn't $1500+.
This laptop is towards the top of the size I wanted, but the really thin bezel keeps it smaller than most 15.6" laptops. The weight is awesome at 4.4 lbs. That 1 lb is the difference between something I can easily hold with one hand and something that is a little more cumbersome.
I'm not a huge gamer, but play Civ 5 and have aims to play Rocket League on computer. It crashed after a few minutes on Ultra settings for Civ. High settings seemed to perform but the fans got a little loud, and the computer would probably get too hot after a while. Medium still looks great and runs well for hours. As long as you're not counting hairs medium should be good enough for most people, and I'm happy with it.
Screen looks great, wonderful color reproduction and good viewing angles. No complaints about touch features. Haven't tried a "smart" pen or anything.
Keyboard is a little what I call "squishy" but perfectly tolerable unless you're a mechanical keyboard aficionado.
Touchpad is nice with a little more definition between the left and right click buttons nicely defined in the one unit touchpad. I still would rather use a mouse most of the time, but that's to be expected for me unless there are discrete buttons.
One complaint is physical is that there is a thin shiny aluminum bezel along the front of the laptop. I've only had the computer for a week and already dinged the soft metal twice, and it's painfully obvious. Just a small annoyance, but worth reporting nevertheless.
Second complaint is battery life is not quite as advertised. Straight out of the box charged to 100% with essentially no background processes running at this point battery came in WELL below "8 hours." While gaming, where I expected reduced battery life, it clocked in at about 2-3 hours before it was time to charge. More surprising was when I was just doing some light internet browsing and some Excel work and it barely made it 4.5 hours. So long story short, don't expect to make it 8 hours without charging.
Overall, great machine that I'm happy I purchased.

Lenovo better have 4 lane Thunderbolt support on the Yoga 720 13 inch, otherwise I'll have to get something else.. eGPUs work on all systems with real Thunderbolt 3 support but you need 4 lanes if you want any kind of decent performance.

"The build quality I would describe as “good enough”, but is still a notch below the XPS. The screen is something that I could live with as someone who is not working in digital or print imaging, but it may be a deal breaker for others. The two-lane PCIe for the Thunderbolt 3 is a big disappointment, however, and I think that will turn away a lot of people who were looking at it as an alternative to the XPS 15. The floaty and frustrating trackpad was something that also made the machine difficult for me to imagine using as a daily driver: it is something immediately noticeable and consistently jarring for the duration of its use."Last edited: Mar 30, 2017capt jerk sparrow and huntnyc like this. -

I'm reviewing the 720 13 inch right now. How do I check on the number of lanes as well as eGPU support generally?

You should be able to find it somewhere like the below image. Do you have the 13" or the 15"?

I suppose that's bad news. It's the 13-inch.
