Interesting. Could extend Lenovo's global reach into Japan's computer market. I'd imagine there'd be little impact on the U.S. PC market, though, seeing as I haven't seen any recent NEC machines stateside. This move also parallels Lenovo's acquisition of IBM's PC division, a move that really brought Lenovo into the American market.

NEC could also help Lenovo to offer high quality LCD displays... -
If it happens I think it will benefit NEC the most out of the two, they're still a niche company in the Worldwide personal computing market and having access to Lenovo's R&D and economies of scale would be beneficial.
In Europe the last time I seen NEC in this market is when they were selling Packard Bell machines, unfortunately the brand name don't bring some fond memories to some and they were struggling before they sold it. Ironically it wasn't long ago that Lenovo was interested in acquiring Packard Bell before Acer finally took over.
-
NEC still has a "PC" business?
-
-
Packard Bell lol. We had one Packard Bell desktop computer in my computer lab in elementary school (14 years ago?
) and it was the only computer with a color screen.
I had the privilege to play Dyna Blaster on it. ^^
I see NEC is building phones now. -
NEC still makes a lot of different things from laptops and desktops to phones in Japan
-
-
I hope Lenovo doesnt wreck the last good monitor maker. This is not good. NEC must be hurting with it's high priced displays compared to commoditized LCDs out there or they wouldn't need a "merger"
-
Does anyone have any NEC PCs still? I knew someone from Japan who had one, that's about it. I read Engadget everyday and I don't even recall any recent news about NEC PCs.
-
-
One of the coolest thing about the merger is that Lenovo would then have its own way to produce their own business quality laptop screens, which would be incredible. We might be able to see them go back to 16:10 screens! And wouldn't we all love that.
I know I would love having a nice screen in my X301!
God I would love more high quality laptop screens. If the merger happens, I'd love to get a new screen to throw in to my laptop. And I'd love to think that if they get -
It's similar to Lenovo buying out IBM's PC division, really. At the beginning, the IBM Thinkpads were sold with IBM badging and support, gradually transferring entirely to Lenovo. If this deal goes through, I'd imagine a similar pattern except with NEC machines instead of IBM ones.'
So, my point is that these views are inaccurate:
-
Well, if it's just the PC business I wouldn't do it if I were Lenovo. PC's are out. Laptops and slates are in.
-
-
The point it really moot anyway. There's no IP worth buying.
-
Also, does NEC even make panels, or do they source them from LG, Samsung, and the like?
-
I don't think lenovo will benefit if they acquire nec's pc division.
-
A Google query suggests the newest p-IPS technology comes from LG.
However, NEC seems to offer its own know-how in a mobile sector as well: http://www.nec-lcd.com/common/pdf/en/lcdnews_e.pdf -

NEC is still around, although they do more in the display business. I've owned NEC displays and did not know that they sold a lap top. NEC is a solid company.

Right.
