I'm a bit confused as to the lenovo recovery partion on the drive of my new x220.

As a test, i went into control panel> backup and restore> set up backup
Here it shows the 9.7gb lenovo recovery partion as the only location to backup to. I didn't do anything as the computer is still brand new, haven't needed to backup yet.

However I need to install a new 80GB SSD for the OS, and replace the current drive with a larger 1TB drive.

Advice from here has been to go into The lenovo thinkvantage toolbox, and select Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery. I've installed that but haven't played around with it yet.

So my first step will be to use R&R to create a backup to USB. Then i install the msata, takeout the orginal HDD, install the new HDD. Then when i bootup, i boot from the recovery USB and install onto the mSata drive. I presume this happens with DOS prompts, and will be self explanatory.

But then what happens to this lenovo recovery partion?

After installing my new drives, i'd like any windows system recovery sectors to go on my 1TB drive. I haven't used it yet but i think Karen's Replicator will be good for backing up my 1TB drive to an external one.

Can someone please tell me if i'm on the right track, and clarify what i do, or what happens to the lenovo partion when I R&R to an msata SSD?

    Thanks!

It depends on the tools that you used for the back up.

The best war to deal with the seperate partition is to back it up and put it away in a safe place.

Oh yes...then there's the matter of restoraton. Be sure to get the sizes of the partition down so that you can reconstruct them with the disk manager if needed. And use image backups.

huh? the partion comes from factory like that, so I presume it is effectively made with lenovo's recovery backup R&R. i'm going to be removing the HDD that came with this so will be able to just keep it on there. my question is about installing the new drives
