Ok, this is a question for you people who've seen the trend for the last few years or so--I haven't. I see that Lenovo is running quite a nice sale through the 11th; it looks like I can get a well-specced T60 for under $1200, which is quite nice. My question is this: Is there a possibility of an as-good or better post-Christmas sale? If so, I'm happy to wait, as I don't quite have enough money scraped together yet anyway (and I don't like to put stuff on credit cards when I don't have the money to pay the balance in full). However, if this is as good of a deal as I'll see for a while, I think I might go ahead and order now.

    What say you?

Nobody knows O_O. They do run sales periodically, and if you need a computer this is a pretty good time to buy one. There will be more sales in the future, but who knows when/what kind of discount they will offer. My .02.

    Anybody else?

The Z series seem to be having massive delays.

The T's don't seem to have the same delays, but you should check.

    That'd be my only concern.

No one knows, eh? That figures. :) I'm almost certainly going to be getting a T-series model, I should have said...

Be aware that there is a backorder of Ts too causing a huge delay in shipments.

I think they are at historically low prices right now, but no one here has a crystal ball. I was considering a T60 in June which was like $1500 which can be had for about $1200 right now.

A $200 rebate was offered for some time around summer; otherwise, not much deal. The sale right now is pretty good.

Due to the nature of the product, it will always be cheaper and better if you wait long enough (only for several weeks or at most a few months).

Therefore, the next "sale" will be better.

But applying that logic can lead someone to never buy anything.

It's best to buy one when when you need it.

Perhas a bigger consideration, would you rather have Vista pre-installed or have a coupon??

I agree with you; I bought mine 10/25 and they had three promotional items (Upgrade Battery, Hard Drive, and DVD), but if I buy the same one today I could have saved another $120! Oh well, technology items always come down in price as the next technology costs more; it's just vicious cycle, but I think as long as you are saving $200-$300, you might as well jump at it. BUT, this close to VISTA...pre-install would be nice! Decisions, decisions.

Thanks for the info, guys. Just to clarify, my query isn't a matter of "well gee, if I wait it will be cheaper"--I know that kind of reasoning will lead one to never buy a machine. I am planning to buy a laptop in the next two months or so, and the deal that Lenovo is running now is pretty nice, so I'm wondering if I should pull the trigger now (even though I don't yet have the money) or whether I should wait a couple of months (when I will have the money) and risk having to pay more.

Interesting point about the Vista pre-install. That counts as a point in favor of buying now for me, though. I like WinXP just fine and I'm frankly a bit suspicious of Vista, so I'd rather have the option to try it out first and then install it myself if I like it.

With that said it seems like there is little reason to wait if you are sure you want a thinkpad. Although I generally warn friends about spending money they don't have, I am not your financial advisor and will have to leave that decision up to you.

Two months is a long enough time in this industry so I am quite certain, using history as a guide, that these items will be cheaper by then (or you'll get more features for the same money). We usually discount sometime during 1Q because sales are slow. The C2D processors are almost certain to drop in price next year, so C2D-equipped laptops should too.
