The moderator of the official Lenovo forum has just announced that there should be a fix for the throttling issue afflicting x220 machines by the end of the month.
X220 cpu throttling problem - Page 55 - Lenovo Community
Although this throttling issue only affects a proportion of x220 computers, this bios fix will be welcome news to those who are impacted.

I wonder if this really will fix it. I mean, you can't really fix a hardware issue with a bios update (assuming it really is a hardware issue)
It's like what Apple did with the iPhone 4 antenna issue...
Good to hear though, got my X220 on order. Hopefully, it being a i5 not i7 means it won't heat up as much so less throttling. -
The i7 is being blamed for throttling right? I saw this on Notebookcheck a while back; (They tested an i5 model.)
-
I saw that but haven't seen anyone here or in other forums report throttling with anything other than the i7. Most people are running 8gb. I have two sticks of ram but only totaling 4gb. Haven't noticed any throttling at all despite some of the video encoding software utilizing the gpu and cpu at full load simultaneously.
-
Do we have any news regarding the BIOS update for the down-throttling problem? I haven't seen anything on Lenovo forums.
-
The temporary solution is to find the latest version of Throttlestop.
-
Guess the eta is 5th Sept as seen over here: Re: X220 CPU throttling problem - Page 63 - Lenovo Community

that's good
can't wait for it to fix it so I don't lag sometimes in sc2 when my cpu throttles
-
The other solution is to get a non-slim 90watt adapter.
-
I suspect the 65W adapter is sufficient if your battery is already at 100%... though.
With my x220 ( i7 cpu) I haven't noticed any performance issues when the
machine was in the state -not that I have thoroughly checked over this issue.
Simply, I get higher 3dmark06 scores with the machine battery at 100% when
plugged-in. Perhaps lowering the screen brightness can provide an additional a temporary fix....
Idea: less wattage used by the computer battery charging and screen output may mean less of a draw on the 65W adapter which seems to have an energy bottleneck as opposed to its 90W cousin.
