What's the difference between Lenovo and Intel drivers for ones like wifi and hard drive controller? Are the Lenovo ones proprietary (google doesn't reveal Intel ever having released drivers in Lenovo's specific versions)? The Intel ones are always more recent so is it always better to use those?

Lenovo drivers are fully tested for Lenovo systems, while Intel drivers are basically generic Intel drivers, which may or may not fully compatible with the Lenovo systems. From experience it is best that you stick with Lenovo drivers, because intel drivers produce weird problems in some systems.

What Lead Org says is true. The lenovo drivers are optimized for lenovo equipment. Microsoft is forced into a little more generic and therefore less optimized postion.

I only changed the wifi and rapid storage drivers, and my power consumption is lower with Intel's.

as long as it works, then it is alright.

On the Y460/560, Intel's wireless drivers are a measurable step-up from what Lenovo offers -- both in terms of stability, and performance vs power options. Also, Intel's RST 9.6x supports TRIM support in AHCI mode, whereas the 9.5x that Lenovo provides (AHCI driver) does not. This is important for those folks using an SSD that supports TRIM in their Lenovo laptop.

Lenovo's driver support is abysmal. Generic driver are usually better.

There are more specific reasons mentioned here.
