I know they said that there will be a fee, but is there any way to waive it? If I open it, and am not satisfied with the build quality, can I return it for a full refund? Thank you

I knew I should never have left the realm of Dell
-
So your Dells are better built then the Thinkpad you received?
I find it hard to believe anything is better built then my T61. -

Perhaps if in some way you could persuade them it is defective.

I've read on other threads that if you buy/exchange for a new Thinkpad the restocking fee is waived. Hearsay obviously.
I'm also thinking of returning my T61 and eating the restocking fee.
The only problem with D630:
1. Weighs 1/2 - 1 lbs more than T61 (with adapter and depending on battery size). Doesn't sound like much but is a big diffence if you're moving around with computer constantly and have lots of other stuff in your laptop bag.
2. Size. D630 and its adapter is slightly larger than T61. If you're stationary no big deal, but if you're moving around with the computer on a multi-daily basis it is a big daily.
3. I'd miss the browser back/forward keys on the T61.
Pros:
1. D630 has 3-year warranty standard. I'll likely have my computer for 2-ish years. And my past experiences with Dell warranty services has been good apart from the explaining your problem three times to the CS rep.
2. Has XP available. That'll save me 1 hour over switching T61 to XP.
3. D630 has better battery life -

uhh many laptops are more durable than the t61. including the brick i call the toughbook LOL
-
2) I suspect it would take you an hour to uninstall all of the extra apps on the 630 anyway. A clean wipe is the way to go for any power users.
3) Can't argue that. T61 has more battery options though, like using an Ultrabay battery, and the Ultrabay battery can be used to change the primary battery without powering down. -
That's why I'm so skeptical of ordering the X61s. I've dealt with the D430 and love it, but the ULV processor and 4200rpm hdd is killing me. -

How about if the T61p package is unopened from its sealed package. Can one send back without paying the restocking fee. I have one sitting boxed in my office for five days and have been trying to decide whether to keep it or not. It sounds like the 14.1 TMD screens are really not that great with a fair amount of light bleed from the bottom and a narrow viewing angle. I have two T40p's with 2GB RAM each and 160GB HD's. I use the parallel and serial ports and infrared occasionally with legacy equipment which the T61p does not have and I love the S-video port to plug in and use my laptop as a DVD player when traveling. Adobe Photoshop CS3 loads fast and seems to handle large images fine on my T40p. The keyboard is great and the viewing angle as I move my T40p back and forth seems good both vertically and from the side so much so that on my last plane flight, I noticed somebody two seats away reading my email. So I ask myself, what I am really gaining and how much am I giving up going to the T61p from the T40p. I have a feeling that I will continue to use the T40p much of the time. It is interesting how many of the features of the T4x series were dropped in the T6x series. Just some observations. I might love the T61p once I open it up.

Yes, unopened boxes/computer can be returned without restocking fee. see. http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...ndingPage=/All/US/Shopping_FAQ/returns_policy
HOWEVER, don't let a CSR tell you otherwise.
Before opening my Lenovo box, I called CS to get a price adjustment as the price went down after I ordered my computer.
The Indian CSR said "no price adjustments are given. Therefore, I asked for a RMA. Indian CSR dude said restocking fee applies even on an unopened box, said was a " new policy". Immediately, I asked for a manager as website says differently. CSR dude said manager would say the same thing (restocking fee applies).
After telling CSR dude pointedly that website explicitly says different, CSR dude relented and offered a price adjustment.
Bottom Line: Clueless CSRs. Have the website link re. restocking fee handy. Be a pain in the ASS. -

It'll do VGA to S-Video or RCA. I think I'm gonna get one. -

I ordered a T61 and then realized that I could get a better price from my Alumni association. I emailed Lenovo asking to cancel and 2 hrs later I get a shipping confirmation.
I call up and get an Indian CSR who says the policy has changed and once shipped I will be charged 15% restocking fee. I tried to explain that I got the shipping email after emailing about cancellation but she wouldnt listen.
I took mercer420's advice and kept calling..In the afternoon (when it is past midnight in India i guess) I got a CSR in the US. She repeated the same thing but after I explained everything she agreed to waive the 15%.
So I have an RMA#...but I'm still waiting for my laptop.
Lesson: Call after 2 pm EST. Have a really good reason for canceling the order. -
You can always lie and said the screen was cracked... -
Today I called Lenovo and the woman I talked to in sales said I needed a case number in order to return for a full refund (no restocking fee). I call tech support, get a case opened, tell them all the problems (extremely loud cpu buzzing, poor lcd, ticking hdd, squeaky touchpad keys, locking up issues) and the case is made. I then call sales back, the first guy I spoke to said I needed to send it in for repair at least once to see if they could remedy it. So I get off the phone with him and call back. The second guy I talk to said the same thing but I tell him that if I sent it in for repair, I'll be over the 21 day limit. He gave tech support a ring and tech told him that in order to fix my laptop, they would need to replace all the components inside. With that said, the sales rep called me back within 10 minutes and told me what the tech said and they are waiving the restocking fee for me. This was at 11am today. He told me he would email me instructions and UPS shipping labels. I'm still waiting for the email.
Does anyone have any experience with how long it takes to receive the email?
I'm guessing 24-48 hours, but I'm skeptical as to whether he was lying or not and if he is actually going to send me and email. Applecare sent me Fedex labels within 10 minutes of calling, but then again, Applecare is premium support, Lenovo is, well.. you know. -
i got my rma authorization within seconds...and the ups label maybe a half hour after the call...i would call back in if i were you
-
Turns out I had outlook open on my other system so that grabbed the mail without me knowing :X. Although, they only sent me 1 UPS label even though I have 3 items to RMA and the label is for 4LB's, which none of the packages are (closest is the minidock which is 5).
Eyecon, how long did it take to get your money back after they received it? They told me 3-5 weeks which sounds ridiculous. -
it took me around 2 weeks for them to charge my cc back after shipping
-
you should have told them to have ups pick it up, I really have no idea why people do it any otherway. -
Lenovo will accept return without 15% restocking fee?
