Okay so I have owned my y580 for about 2 years now, and it could be showing its age now.

I was starting to look at ways to increase its speed with overclocking, throttling, and turbo... yada, yada.

But I wanted to see how hot my CPU and GPU get when running just benchmarks to see if i have some room to overclock my stuff. The short answer is no

I was testing my GPU and have lenovo dynamic graphics on so it will put is core clock to 950 and memory at 2400. This will get the GPU to max around 92C, and it will decrease the core clock to about 835 to reach about 87C. So this seems way off and was thinking about repasting.

Second, I wanted to test my CPU and test the throttle and turbo. Nope my i7 3610QM will ONLY max at multiplier of 23 (2.3ghz), if i try to max the core at 33 (to bring it to the max of the core 3.3ghz)it will spike the temps to 88C+ and then instantly bring down the multipler to 11.

This is a massive issue because overheating is ruining the performance of the laptop. Is the only solution dusting and repasting (I have never taken a laptop apart, but have built many desktops so i am a newbie when it comes to repasting)

And is this a good guide to follow to repaste the y580?

How do you check if your cpu is in throttle state?

Reviving this thread because I just re-pasted my CPUs and getting this same issue.

I am checking the throttle state by using CPUz

I don't know if you got a bad chip or what, but I got around 1200/2700 @84C while running 3DMark 11/Firestrike using Zalman NC 1500 Cooler. I've also repasted and cleaned some dust last year or so.

Try using a cooler or at least lift it a bit maybe?

The GPU temps are completely fine, its the CPU temps that are off the charts
