Has anybody here had experience with Lenovo's Windows XP "downgrade CD"? I was thinking about doing this and was wondering if it was an easy process?

I thought about getting it too, but why? If you have an XP cd just follow the fresh instal guide in this section. :) Save the 100$ and get more ram or hd space

It's not 100$. To downgrade it's only 19$ and the backup CD thing is free from lenovo

True, but if you go for the basic Vista set-up it talkes off almost 40$ depending on what sort of coupon config your doing. When you tag on the extra amount to go with XP, abut 19-25$ again depending on the price set-up. it comes out to around 60-70$. So I was off by about 30$, but you can still get 4gigs of ram for that much at newegg or something.

Good point, but it's only 19$ now to downgrade to XP which is a great deal. Pretty sure its going to be a limited time. I have a friend that works at IBM canada and he gets free copies of OS so I am picking up vista business 64 from him and using the XP on my desktop at home :D

Is it legal or ethical for you to take what your friend (not *you*) gets for free because he works there? Even if you get away with it, do you think this sends a good message to the readers here?

If you buy a new Thinkpad after April (not too sure about the month), the XP downgrade discs are supplied in the box for free.

The downgrade process is easy. You either get 2 CD's or 3, depending on your system. The instructions on the CD tell you which sequence to put the discs in.

Only Vista Business and Ultimate edition is provided with free Downgrade rights to Windows XP from Microsoft.

Downgrade rights is a provision from Microsoft and not from the computer manufacturer. You can use any Windows XP CD and have it activated through Microsoft.

Vista isn't really that bad. It depends on what you use your machine mostly for. Personally, I have turned off the 'Aero' feature as I just don't need it.

Of course it is, ever heard of the microsoft friends and neighbour benefits? Since my friend is a senior analyst, he gets them for free instead of paying a discounted price.

Vista is good and bad. For me I have to use engineering programs like SOLIDWORKS, which wont work on Vista. That is unless you buy the newest version ( upwards of 15$ grand ) of it, which nobody uses right now :( So unless it is something like that Vista should be fine for you.
