Well they've been giving out the specs in pieces for the newer hardware, so people have been writing totally open drivers for them. My understanding is those drivers are very basic right now and not even all the specs are out to do much 3d. Here is a news item on the most recent release, and it sounds like they don't even do 3d yet.
There are reverse engineered open source drivers for older Ati hardware that are supposed to have ok performance but be fairly stable.
And there are the drivers that Ati makes themselves which are unstable, always lagging in features, and generally perform at 1/2 of the Windows performance.
This is my understanding anyways.. I don't track Ati too closely because of the above, and everyone still seems to not enjoy their hardware so I suspect the above hasn't changed too much yet.
Contrast that with Nvidia who writes featureful drivers, updates them quickly, and comes within about 10% excess or defecit of the Windows performance.
Intel is a middle ground right now, with open drivers that are decent, but still need work -- I can run Wow for example, at 5fps. Thats the same framerate as Warcraft 3 on the same laptop, and obviously much less than it should be. I expect those drivers to mature more quickly than the Ati ones, though.

Yes!!! its a dream come true!! I'm totally getting that T500!
-
is it june yet?
-
No, come back in September...
-
sounds about right.
-
What about tablet version? How likely is X400 tablet w/ svga+?
-
Uh oh ... I just read that the Lenovo U110 IdeaPad has a retail price of USD 1 999!?! .... That does not bode well for the pricing of the revised x-series ...

Oh wow, huge buyer's remorse here...I just placed an order for the X300 last week! -_- Too bad the only reason why I ended up choosing this particular model is because I couldn't find a relatively light 14.1" notebook. Oh well...
-
Nothing to regret with the purchase of an X300.
When the new generation stuff comes out the X300 will still be current for a much longer time. Its the best possible option right now, and the next stuff they make wont be any better, just a different size.
X300 is a good purchase. -
x200 as per gizmodo
apparently Gizmodo have a sighting of the new x200, no trackpad, 11"..
can't wait! -
Prior to buying the first X300 I'd ordered a Macbook Air and cancelled it when the X300 was released. I've since seen the Macbook Air and if I'd bought that then I would have huge buyer's remorse. -
does anyone know if they're updating the ideapads too?
-
I wouldn't count on it because the ideapads are still quite new. Maybe a chip refresh or something similarly subtle.

Any speculation of whether the speculated x400/x500 models will have faster processors (2.4ghz maybe) and advanced video cards (256 mb at least)? This speculation is driving me crazy!
I'm going to MIT in the fall and want/need something (preferably a Lenovo) that's powerful enough to tackle whatever I might encounter. -
I doubt there will be x400/x500 models
the t400/t500 will take place for bigger laptop sizes. -
Moreover, if X400/X500 had been released they wouldn't have gotten discrete GPUs.
-
Will all new X-Series Thinkpad's have touchpads? It's my number 1 reason for staying with an X-Series laptop. I really dislike touchpads and hope Lenovo do not have them on all future laptop's.
Trackpoint is what makes Thinkpads! -
Good thing I sold my T61 before they released these.
I had a hard enough time selling a loaded Thinkpad, much less with a refresh coming out. -
But no, I don't think the X200 is getting a touchpad. -
-
Of course not, but we know they're coming this summer.
-
Some great information on the Engadget site including pictures of the new Lenovo's. I'm a little surprised that the X200 may come without a touchpad. Here are the links:

I love the X200's specs, and I think I'm going to try to wait for it rather than pulling the trigger on the X300. Hoping the competition from other similar notebooks (like the Voodoo Envy, MB air, and notebooks from other PC makers...yes I know they have different feature sets, aesthetics, etc.) may help keep prices reasonable on the new Lenovo's. Once the X200 is out will have to decide between it and the X300. -
Hi,
I really look forward to X200's release. I'll be in the market for new laptop soon as I need one for my college classes and I consider X300 but from what has been posted about X200 up until now it looks like a better option for me. It's smaller and slightly lighter (I have a thing for ultra portables... ), it has better battery life, has no optical drive and no touchpad (I won't use those anyway) and seems to be equipped with more powerful CPUs. Obviously it's all speculation for now but if it'll be this way I'm pretty much sold for X200. -

hm ok so its June. shouldn't there have been some word about the new T series?
Maybe in July...
what are the options for the T400 graphics? is it both integrated and discrete? -
It definitely won't be released til mid July, since Intel has delayed Montevina (aka Centrino 2). T400 has switchable graphics, meaning it has both integrated and discrete - the power settings determine which works when.
