Apparently there's a second fan on the X61s towards the bottom to help cool the wireless card.

Intake vent (I never knew this was an air vent):

From what I can see in the pics and what I've read over on ThinkPad Forums, the second fan only comes with the X61 s with the WWAN option. It does NOT come in the X61 with WWAN and the X61s without WWAN. However, you can order the second fan from Lenovo and install it yourself.

All I have got to say is WOW that is definitely interesting to see a *second* fan on the X61s... with its own little dedicated intake vent! I wonder - is it really effective while also being acoustically nonintrusive ? (long way of saying is it quiet still?)

EDIT: Isn't this from your other thread?

So I've been begging them to fill my X61 order and I'm gonna be annoyed once I get it.
    Wonderful.

    Oh ok.

I think they should've tried to design a vent closer - but then again the vent helps cool the HDD as well, I guess? Maybe if they had moved the vent to the bottom of the right palmrest it would've been better as it would've helped cool the underside, where the motor for all HDDs are generally located?

I believe you have to request it by calling Lenovo.

Just contacted Lenova. Apparently the service parts (Non customer installable) are handled by IBM service. Can you confirm that the fan that you installed in an X61 was FRU 42X3806?

I just bought the new X61 with the Penryn cpu and my palmrest doesn't get hot at all. It gets just mildly warm on the right palmrest but that is it. Only time it gets really warm is when I play CS:S on it.

I don't know if the non-Penryn x61 are more hot or not.

My palmrest gets moderately warm in XP. Under Ubuntu 8.04 it gets really hot. Uncomfortably hot. "I can't keep my finger on the fingerprint reader" hot. Seems like linux likes to turn the wifi card on full blast.

As I understand it, not all of the system boards have the power connector for the second fan, so to add the fan, it's more than just ordering the fan.
