About to buy my first Lenovo...t61
How do I tell if the screen I am buying is glossy or matte(I want matte)???

It is matte they don't have a glossy option for the T61.
Any more questions? -
Nope...you nailed it!!!
Oh Ok...which screen do you recommend...does the highest res make everything look too small? -
It's difficult to recommed something like that, since everyone has different preferences (and eyesight). I would check out the different screen resolutions at your local big box reseller.

If you already own a laptop that is the same size in screen and ratio (widescreen or standard), you can ask for someone around here who has a specific resolution to post a screenshot of the NBR homepage then you can set that as your wallpaper and that should scale everything down. Then you can judge if it's too small or not.
For example, if you already have a 14" widescreen laptop and you're thinking of buying a ThinkPad that is also a 14" widescreen but you are pondering about the different resolutions; you can ask someone who has a computer with that resolution to post the screenshot of the NBR homepage on a maximized window.
I don't know if my logic on that is correct or not though due to pixel sizes. I may be totally off.

I recommend you go look at the resolutions at a store but...
I found the WUXGA to be too small even though I have good eyes plus I am not doing any photo editing or anything that would require such a high resolution screen. BTW the WUXGA screen isn't as bright as the WSXGA+ alot of people seem to complain about the screen quality of the WUXGA.
For me the WSXGA+ is just right not too small but I can watch an iTunes video while surfing the web which is what I wanted to do.
