Ok so I have a customers laptop that the HD is going up in making crazy noises etc... I am unable to clone the drive because it is failing and have been able to piece together a backup on a external USB thumb drive and now my issue is that when I boot to the R&R disk I see a quick flash of setup is loading config... up in the top of the screen but after that the screen just sits on black.... I have tried to boot to other XP cds and it does the same thing... HOWEVER just for s and giggles I booted to a Windows 7 Ulltimate disk and it booted just fine.....

I assume this is some sort of funky BIOS issue with this computer and have tried to change the HDD to combatibility mode and its still just sitting at a black screen when I boot to a XP CD or R&R disk.. Anyone have any ideas?

I also tried booting from an external USB DVD drive I have same issue.

so you started with Rescue and recovery CD 1 in the 8 discs set (XP) or the 3 discs set of Vista.

R&R of 1 of 6 disks set, OEM XP disks SP1-3 I tried so many different versions the only thing I can actually get video on is a Windows 7 Ultimate disk I have. I ended up restoring the OS using the recovery partition then cloned it to a new hard drive and that worked fine. I could not clone the drive as it is because the hard drive was so corrupted but once I restored it with the recovery partition it let me clone it...

I no longer have the laptop but I am still curious as to why it would not boot to video from the system restore disks or any XP CDs after hours of google searching the closest thing I came to finding an answer was someone mentioning some sort of VGA issue with the LCD so I have no idea.
