I am going to college next year and i would really like a laptop to come wtih me. Right now I have a dell desktop and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to sell my desktop and get the leveno T500. I am heading into a engineering program and wondering if the T500 would be my best fit. I also want to be able to use this laptop after college as good as new, so basically I am also wondering if it will last me a while. Lastly just a question about the actual laptop, does it come with a built in webcam? And I am very open to suggestions of any sort.

    Thanks.

it would be the best choice. The laptop is quite rugged, supports hybrid sli which means it will have a better battery life and most of all, it will not be stolen as it's not attractive, it just gets the work done.

It's not really hybrid SLI (which implies that the graphics cards can be used at the same time for more power, which you cannot do), it's switchable graphics. I can get ~8 hours on a 9-cell battery.

The T500 is built very well, and should last you quite a while. You can order it with or without a webcam, which is a $30 option.

If you want a built-in webcam, then choose the 1.3 Megapixel Integrated Camera. If not, you can always buy an external webcam from somewhere else, or from Lenovo. I would suggest the integrated camera.

ThinkPads are well built machines, but there's no guarantees in life. Luck always plays a large role.

I think for us to answer that question you need to give us more info on how you are going to use this laptop.

Are you going to play games? What games?
Do you have alot of files, music, photos, engineering related ones.

Basically what are the most intensive programs you want to run?

The games I plan to play is Warcraft III. And I dont have a lot of files, I just use itunes for my music, only like 100 + songs, bearly any photos on my comp at all. And I am guessing I will have to have some engineering files, but not sure which ones.

The base config for dedicated graphics should suit just about anything. The only thing you would want to upgrade are things that would suit you better (e.g. higher res screen, webcam, wifi card, battery options, DVD burner, ect). But when it comes to raw power and ability the t500 base config should handle things quite well. But like I stated above you may require certain options(I couldn't live with vista basic).

As for the stolen comment, the laptop looks like something from years and years ago so most wont be the wiser and realize its a brand new hot rod of a laptop. Also I recommend looking at the sticky in the lenovo sub forum for the student deals as it can save you 150-200 off the straight price, as well as there is a current deal going on til I think the 25th of May.

Ok so basically I will be fine with all of the basic upgrades. Becuase all i want to do on this laptop is, connect to wi-fi internet, do school work, play some game, download music, and browse the web. Just basic things.
