I just recently got a brand new Lenovo Ideapad Y450 in the mail and other than the usual computer set up issues the computer seems to be doing well.

However one problem I just noticed was that the lid doesn't fully close. The laptop has no latch but just shuts using the hinge and I notice that when I close the lid it's very loose and if the laptop goes vertical or is carried sideways the lid will remain open with about half a centimeter of space. It goes all the way down if I have the computer flat on a desk but the second I carry it or pick it up the lid will hang open.

Anyone have this issue? Any ways to fix it? I'm thinking of calling them up and hoping it could be solved because even my mom's old Dell Inspiron which has a similar hinge system shuts completely and solidly without having the lid being loose.

    Really any ideas guys?

We just called Lenovo and they said that they would be willing to replace my Y450 with a brand new model within the next month.

Or I could just return it and get a different laptop. Would it be better to stick with the Y450 or maybe get something like a Dell Studio 15 or HP Pavillion. I don't know if I can get as good a price as I did on the Lenovo though.

I have the same problem too. You are not the only one who face this problem. I even question some of the people from lenovo forum. They face the same problem too. But i did not know whether it is design to be like that since there is no magnetic latch. Even some of the people say that it is normal. So i wonder , since you called Lenovo, what does the person say? Is it normal or need to be fix?

^ Ok well I called them and though they didn't say if it was a problem or not. They were happy to ship me a brand new Y450 and they paid for shipping. So customer service has been okay so far. =]

The new Lenovo Y450 just came in a few days ago and i'm typing this on my new laptop. Only now I noticed the lid has the same problem as the one I returned. Since I got two new Ideapads with the same issue i'm inclined to think this is a minor design flaw. The computer has been working fine so far and though this lid thing bothers me a bit I think it's probably just a common design flaw but nothing actually wrong with the computer.

I don't know how you would carry a laptop but what I usually do is I place my palm on the bottom of it and carry it sideways. I would think all you need to do is make sure your palm is covering the small opening and once you hold it to walk around the laptop will close fully.

It's still a minor design flaw, but considering it closes when it's on the table it's probably not a major deal.

How are your feelings on the heat coming out of the laptop? I am still on the fence about purchasing this. The only thing that worries me is the heat, but I like the design, price, and the features of the Y450.

Thanks for the tip dba415 i'll probably try carrying it that way for a while and see how it works out.

As far as heat, I also worried alot about it before buying. Really it was the one thing that made me hold back from choosing the Lenovo over similar HP's and Dell's. Ultimately however I read some of the reviews done on this site and when you look at a comparison pics with temperature readings. The Lenovo heat readings didn't seem all that extreme compared to similar HP and Dell laptops being reviewed.

They did say it's cooling system was bad and the computer did heat up but it wasn't nearly as extreme as I had expected. I decided to order and hope for the best, needless to say after physically using it I can't complain about the heat. Though "heat" could be opinionated, for me it hasn't bothered me at all and though it does get very warm, I imagine most laptops heat up a little bit. It certainly hasn't effected my ability to use the computer.
Actually I just watched a movie on it today and I could still type on it and touch the computer after it was running for 2 hours.
I haven't really had a chance to use other laptops often though, so I don't have much to compare it to.

Also this thread might be of interest to you, I just came across it a little while back and it talks about the heating issues on the Y450.

Personally though, for me heat wasn't a problem on this. The only real complaint I could have at this point is the lid.

Thank you very much for the comparison pictures. I had not seen them until now and looking at it the difference doesn't seem that bad. Thanks to those pictures, I will probably go ahead and go the same route you did. Purchase the Lenovo and hope for the best.
