hmm ... just a few days ago ordered a C300.
maybe i should have gone for a bare OCZ Vertex 3 !?
-
The M4/C400 also looks like it has the same spacer as the C300, would be great to get confirmation.

Man, didn't realize Newegg is out of 80gb mSATA drives just now
Everybody click on auto-notify so they'll get more in stock quicker! -
Done.
Assuming they get more in stock (interesting that nobody has any - not just newegg)... are you going to install Win7 on the mSata and use the HD for data? I'm looking forward to getting a report on the steps/effort involved. -
Where are the intel 310 80gb units? No one has them in stock!

Amazon.com? -
There are a bunch on ebay for a reasonable price (same as non-sale newegg or amazon). This seller has an extremely high rating:
Intel SSDSA2CW080G310 80gb Ssd 320 Series Oem Box 2.5 | eBay -
I saw that too while looking. I know it has the same That's a intel 320 series, looking for 310 series
SSDMAEMC080G2C1 That's the product number and no one has them.
Nor amazon has them either.
Nice try
I guess serversupply has them in stock, never heard of them tho -
Ah you're right. Makes me glad I bought mine on sale from newegg last week. It must be all the Thinkpad buyers buying them up.
-
FYI, the Crucial m4 /C400 SSD is available now: Crucial Solid-State Drives - Hard Drive replacement for notebook and netbook.
According to the Mechanical Drawings of the product flyer, it should be the same as C300 which has a spacer. -
I can't believe my own stupidity.
I've been searching for a good 1.8" SSD to put into X220T, cursing Lenovo that they couldn't make it 2.5" and that there are so few good 1.8" drives available.
Thanks goodness I'd seen this thread before I pulled the trigger. Thanks to everyone who kept this thread up! -
More evidence:
in which you can clearly see the black spacer. -
The micron product sheet (a few posts back) has 7mm models of the C400 listed. I hope stores stock those; I'd be willing to pay a premium to not have to void my warranty by modding an SSD.
-
I just canceled my Intel 320 order for one of these. Hope they show up in stores before the x220s ship
-
It seems that m4 doesn't have such warranty-void sticker. See here.
-
They aren't showing the important shot, which is the edge opposite the SATA connector.
-
If you use the compatibility wizard on crucial's site for SSD, it shows the M4 as a compatible drive for the X220. I posted a question on there asking specifically if the drive is compatible with the X220, and also if the warranty would be void if you remove the spacer to make it fit the 7mm height. Lets see if they review and approve the question.

quick question - is the Kingston SSDNow V+180 series compatible with the mSATA port in the x220?

That's a 1.8" drive. No chance.
Could you add http://forum.notebookreview.com/sol...sf1222-msata-ssd-user-review.html#post7389868 to the mSATA list? Also will you footnote deshelling existing 9.5mm drives as explained? -
Will this work http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/mydigitalssd-64gb-50mm-bullet-proof-msata-ssd/
Anyone ever seen this before? Opinions? -

A deshelled 9.5mm OCZ Vertex 2 confirmed to fit in a 7mm cavity in a T420(s) here.
-
I would also like to note that the m4/C400 does come in 7mm drive flavors as is detailed by this product brief.
The difference in model numbers is "AK" = 7mm and "AC" = 9mm.
MTFDDAK256MAM-1K1 = 7mm
MTFDDAC256MAM-1K1 = 9mm
Hope this helps. -
Hey all--first post here.
I like the specs on the crucial C300--but I also like the Samsung 470. (everybody like options, right?)
So while investigating the possibilities of de-shelling 9.5mm SSDs to fit in a 7mm slot I came across this picture of a Samsung 470 series drive with the top half of its shell removed--and the circuit board is itself screwed into the bottom shell:
Samsung 470 Series 256GB SSD Review - Image Gallery - TechSpot
Looks good 'nuff to me to mount it like that ... I'm sure the top half of the shell is at least 2.5mm high and the bottom half should alone provide at least as much protection as an anti-static bag. Any thoughts?
Also--bit late for this comment--but one reason NOT to use the mini PCI-e connection in the x220 for an SSD ... cause it is already fitted with a WWAN card like on my machine. -
I have an Intel 320 80gb ssd. I took the 9mm shim off and am looking for shorter screws. Are these the right screws?

when i bought my intel 40gb ssd, it came some short screws. do those not work?
-
this page: Newegg.com - Intel 320 Series SSDSA2CW300G3K5 2.5" 300GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
A picture there seems to indicate two sets of screws. I assume one set is to mount the drive in the tray, and the other is for removal of the shim / spacer?
Can anyone confirm this. Also, this is for the full retail box, not the oem. -
Negative. The smaller of the two screws is to mount the SSD to the 3.5" bracket and the larger is to mount the 3.5" bracket to a desktop case.
I cut the screws down to size with a dremel. -

M2 x 3 screws (what I had available) work OK. M2 x 4 may work provided they don't bottom out. What is the length of the threaded part of the existing screws? subtract 2.5mm (the spacer thickness) from that and you get the maximum length of the screws you can use without the spacer.
John -
Thanks. I'd like to get one without voiding the warranty. I don't see them available yet on crucials website.
-
Any issues with warranty issues and buying Intel 320 OEM Drive from Buy.com? Not the retail box version. I remember reading a thread where there were issues with warranty coverage for the OEM box version of the drives.
-
If you want one now, get the Intel 320 series. You can easily remove the spacer (just 4 screws) and it does not void the warranty. But you'll need to get 4 new, shorter screws that are pretty hard to find unless you shop online. Ace and Home Depot don't have them. They're on ebay for some $3.80 shipped for 10 of 'em
-
Thanks, Intel 320 is my backup, would like to get the M4 because of performance if I can. Have a link to screws? I think there suppose to be 2x3
-
Any recommendations? I would like to use the P3 from Corsair. Has anyone been using it before?
Thanks
>> Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Hard Drives, SSD, SATA III, 256GB -
You might want to look in this thread, I have no idea if the P3 fits :
http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/572243-list-drives-compatible-x220.html -
If you don't need WWAN, I might suggest the Intel mSATA drive and the Hitachi Z5k500. You'll save quite a bit and have more storage.
-
The new Intel 320 SSds fit 7 mm slots.
-
I believe your link to the C400 Product brief is off, you have to take out the / at the end for it to work: http://www.crucial.kiev.ua/pdf/c400_ssd_product_brief.pdf
Also, it isn't the M4 that comes in the 7mm variant, only the C400. The difference is that that the M4 is a drive by Crucial, and the C400 (with the 7 and 9.5mm variants) are by Micron, Crucial's parent company. This makes the C400 challenging to order as there are less vendors since it's mainly meant for OEMs. I am trying to hunt down a 256GB 7mm Micron SSD as we speak. -
These are Micron part numbers, Crucial's parent. Crucial doesn't offer a 7mm version at this time (I called them to confirm).
-
Do you mean new revision? Because Intel 320 isn't new any more. I just got a 320 yesterday and it's definitely 9mm with a spacer that can easily be removed to make it 7mm (but needed to buy shorter screws)
-
yeah I ordered mine with WWAN card. Very easy to use rather than have something sticking out from the laptop
-
where did you purchase the shortened screws? are you sure the screws that came with the drive won't fit? (the ones used to mount the drive to a 3.5'' bracket)
-
I bought an OEM version (costs less) that doesn't come with a retail box cables or mounting bracket. So I don't know about the screws for the mounting bracket.
I got the screws from ebay: 15 NEW M2x3 Laptop Screws Bk DELL IBM HP Compaq sony US | eBay
You could also simply use tape to tape the case together -
i used to have the 40gb x-25v before i sold it. i believe it came with the standard 'short' screws you would use to mount your desktop hard drives to the case's mounting holes.
i also got the 80gb oem version, so we'll find out. -
sp00n - laptop hard drive screws are M3x2.5 or M3x3 and too large for this purpose.
you really do need M2x3 or M2x4 screws sourced elsewhere. -
thanks for the clarification erik. looks like i'll be ordering some 2x3 screws from the ebay link posted above.
-
I'm confused, why is the intel 510 series cannot be inserted to x220 does the x220 has 1, 8" drive? Sorry for the repeated question
-
The X220 is a 2.5" drive, but it only 7mm high. Like most notebook hard drives, the 510 is 9.5mm in height. In other words, it's too tall to fit the bay.
-
No way ..... really lenovo ..... are they restricting us for some reason ...
-
this sucks, I've just ordered X220 but turns out that it is limited to 7mm height. I have been looking all over for the right SSD at 256GB but seems only Intel has less complains. Other brand seems having a lot of problem. Checked out newegg, they are out of stock for the 300GB Intel 320, then again Intel 320 is not Sata3 .... sucks really sucks. I wonder if I can modify the Intel 510. Make a new housing using CNC miling machines ...
