Recently I find that the time to turn down my T61 takes longer time than before. This is after I have ended all tasks ("End Task") and the desktop has disappeared, the screen then lingers for an annoyingly long time, like maybe 4-5 minutes, before it turns completely dark. This has been for perhaps several weeks now. What could be the reason for this?

XP or Vista?
-
It's XP Professional. Bought last year.
-
Have you used TuneXP?
-
Must haven't, since I don't even know what it is.
-
try running ccleaner
-
Have you installed any security software?
I have an app that can optionally clear the contents of my Windows page file before I shut down. If turned on, that adds a little time onto the shutdown process. -
You can also try by turning off automatic system restore backup. That frees up about 10-20%. Check for spyware, and viruses. I personally used Ad-aware and AVG Free Edition back when I was using XP and had to worry about viruses.

You can also try defragmenting your computer. I use JkDefrag.

It could be due to a number of reasons, but to have a better idea of what's going on with your system is to check the "Events Log" for the program/process that's causing the delay in shutdown. Either way, if a program or process isn't shutting down, the issue can be cleared up using Microsoft's UHC (Profile Hive Cleanup) module. What it does is to forcibly stop the process/program that's not complying with the shutdown process.
Now, you never mentioned whether this is XP or Vista, so assuming this problem relates to XP the UHC from Microsoft will clear up your shutdown problem in a hurry.
Hope this helps
Long time shutting down, reason?
