Hi All,
I am looking at purchasing the Y510. Is the screen really too glossy like everyone is saying?
Also, would you upgrade to the NVIDIA graphics card since NVIDIA is having problems with their cards overheating?
Thanks!
Nick

The screen is just as glossy as any other glossy screen out there... I think it's only that most people reviewing the Ideapad lines are used to the Thinkpad line, which has matte screens (in previous models anyway).
Even if NVIDIA is having issues, the performance gap between the model with dedicated graphics card and a model without it is huge. I suggest you you get a model with the dedicated NVIDIA graphics. You might also want to look into Y530 model, which was just released about a week ago. -
Thank you! Anyone else?

I agree with phlebas, the glossy screen is just like any other glossy screen out there, it's not glossier than others. I've both glossy and mat screen laptops at home and I can tell for indoor usage there is not much difference, in fact I kinda prefer the glossy screen. When you use your laptop outdoor or under the sunlight, that's when mat screen has a bit of advantage, but even a mat screen is no guarantee to be very visible under bright sunlight, how bright the backlight plays a factor too.
And yes I'd still get he discrete card in your case, for sure ATI would be an ideal choice at this moment, but I think the Nvidia problem is not as bad as people made it sound like. I'm currently using the so called affect card, but so far it's fine. Anyway, check out the Y530, the 9300M isn't affected iirc. -
I have one in the mail right now... will get to my parents house within 2-3 days and I should have it in 3-4 depending on when I can get back. If you're going to hold off on it I can take some pics and post them.
I specifically picked it for the type of screen and screen overlay (of course, it's also one of the hardier consumer systems, but we all know that) almost exclusively.

I'm very pleased with my Y510. I like the glossy screen, it is nice and bright compared to the screen on my T40 or the T60 and T61's I work on at work.
I have the 8600 GT and it does get hot, but not overly so. Honestly it doesn't get much warmer then my T40 or Inspiron 6000 with discrete graphics.
Looking at the Ideapad Y510 - Help!
