Just ran across this ad. Looks like a pretty fair machine to me, but I'm not familiar with Lenovo at all, other than with posts and reviews I've read online. To someone with no real knowledge of the company or its products (me LOL), this seems like a deal to jump on.

Would appreciate words of wisdom from any Lenovo users, especially if you happen to be an owner of this particular laptop. This will be a gift for a friend of mine who has met with some hard times and is, for the most part, house-bound. She spends most of her day in bed; this machine will mostly be used to surf the Net, check emails and probably to use IM apps (she likes ICQ and Yahoo Messenger). No serious power, huge drive, or anything fancy is needed.

I understand that nearly any machine would suffice, but want to give her something not too expensive but with a decent build quality from a company with a reputation for good service, should it be needed.

Lenovo quality is pretty decent although my experience is mostly with the T and X series boxes for business. I have a Y410 I got for my mother she loves it. It does get a bit warm, but I got her a targus chill pad and she has been fine. I suspect because she uses this unit mostly in bed to watch netflix movies, and email tech questions.

Thanks, phil. A rave review from Mom just about clinches things! Sounds as if your mother uses the machine in the same manner my friend will use hers.

Is the machine actually uncomfortable to use without the chill pad? If so, I should probably consider something like that, as well.

@jujube: yes, thanks, I did glance over the reviews (and is partly what I meant when I mentioned that I'd read reviews and posts online), but the model I'm considering isn't among those listed.

Yes Lenovo section is helpful. I got this unit for my mom, and it is a great home machine. It did get hot because she didn't give enough space for ventilation, but the Targus chillpad worked great.

Maybe some simple advice will do the trick and save the price of the chill pad. Geez, I'm a cheap SOB! :D

Well the issue was my mom's quilt got too close to the ventilation outlets, and it would get hot. If she can heed that advice (my 60 plus year old mother decided not to she should be fine.

My machine normally feels as if it runs cool. However tonight I had a flat tire and I was in my car as they fixed it, so I used my laptop on battery battery. It was a cold night. But the normally pleasant left side exhaust felt hot enough to burn me in the cold.

Too much juice must have caused the afterburners to kick in! [IMG]

I doubt my friend will ever take the machine outside whether the temperature is hot or cold. Actually, I doubt she'll ever use it anywhere other than lying in bed, but thanks for the heads up; I'm considering one for myself, too, instead of a MacBook (I have a MBP). I like the smaller machines.

I have X61 for taking on the road. With Exchange, Groove, and VPN I am always sure to have the same documents and mail everywhere.

Just saw mom. It is very comfortable. She takes it off when watching movies because as she says, "Its too loud."
