t500 is next gen, but I dunno if its worth it, since what you have is pretty good.

Whats wrong with yours now? What do you use it for?

Perhaps what you want is the ThinkPad W500, which is the mobile workstation edition.

alternately, you could go with the ThinkPad T500, which will still allow for the same processing power and RAM up to 8GB (if you have the money and 64-bit operating system configured to match) but which doesn't have the same graphics and display options as the workstation model.

EDIT: The more I read, the more I'm suspicious that upgrading your machine may not help you. I'm wondering if the database code is kludgy (not optimized well) and might be slow, or if there's a problem with network throughput causing your issues, or if the server is being overtaxed. Do other peoples' machines work faster with this database app than yours? That T61p is pretty powerful.

What are your desktops? Having a quad core shouldn't make it be that much better. Perhaps your SSD has the shutter issue? Your laptop should not be slow at all...

Unless you want a better graphics card, I don't really see a need.

If you're I would opt for a T500 or W500 at the lenovo outlet and pop that SSD in.

There is not going to be that notable of a difference in performance.

What model SSD do you have? The only thing I could see that would cause your performance to suffer in that config is if your SSD is defective and/or has the stuttering JMicron controller.

At most a T500/w500 with a 2.8GHz T9600 CPU will be 15-20% faster on the CPU side. This is probably not even worth the upgrade.

The w700 could be a substantial performance upgrade due to the option for Core2Exreme and Quad Core CPUs. However, due to its size/weight I hesitate to recommend it.

Quad cores are better for multi tasking purposes you just need to check if you really need it.
