    Loose Ultrabay optical drive

    My T61p's DVD writer drive is vertically loose; there is a larger than normal (almost 2 mm) gap between the drive and the rest of the chassis. Is this normal? I will post a pic later.

    There is also some minimal CPU whine coming from the left palmrest. Anybody have it?

    Unfortunately, yes. Mine ranges from minimal/barely noticeable, to irritating and annoying. I don't think you're going to get away from the whine too easily. Every Core2duo i've used has emitted the sound (Merom and Penryn), although some people do report their machines are totally silent.
